If your smartwatch freezes, reboots, loses GPS, or fails to save a workout, start with a charge and force restart—not a factory reset. Then update the watch and phone software, check location permissions, and test the built-in workout app. These steps help separate a temporary GPS or app problem from a fault that needs service. They cannot guarantee recovery of a workout that crashed before it was saved.
GPS trouble and workout crashes can look alike, but they are not always the same issue. A watch can record an activity without an immediate map, while an app can crash during GPS acquisition or when saving. Work through the checks below in order, and sync any activity you can before changing apps or resetting the watch.
Quick triage: match the symptom to the first check
| What happens | Start here |
|---|---|
| The entire watch is frozen or the screen is blank | Charge it, then force-restart it. |
| The watch works, but GPS keeps searching | Check location settings and test outdoors with a clear view of the sky. |
| Only one workout app crashes | Update or isolate that app; compare it with the watch’s built-in workout app. |
| The watch reboots during workouts | Update the software chain, test without demanding extras such as music or LTE, and check for heat or battery trouble. |
| The problem continues after software and app checks | Back up and consider a reset; seek service if the issue persists or the watch shows physical warning signs. |
Before troubleshooting: identify where the failure occurs
Note whether the whole watch locks up or just the workout app; whether it reboots, shuts down, or returns to the watch face; and whether the failure happens when starting, waiting for GPS, pausing, or saving. Check whether it affects only outdoor activities, one workout type, or one app. Also note any recent watch, phone, companion-app, or workout-app update, the battery level, whether the phone is nearby, and whether the watch is unusually hot or damaged.
For GPS problems, find out whether your model has onboard GPS or relies on a connected phone for location in the mode you are using. Check location access on the relevant device and app. An activity with no map may reflect a phone-GPS or syncing limitation rather than a failed workout recording; a crash while saving points toward a different problem than a slow GPS lock.

Fix 1: Charge the watch and force-restart it
A low or depleted battery can cause a blank screen, unexpected shutdowns, or a workout that does not finish saving. Put the watch on its charging dock or charger and allow it to charge before testing. Samsung notes that a depleted Galaxy Watch may vibrate even when its display remains blank; follow its frozen or unresponsive watch guidance if that happens.
Samsung Galaxy Watch
If the watch is unresponsive, press and hold the Home/Power and Back keys together until “Rebooting…” appears, then release them. Some models may take up to 30 seconds. This is a force reboot, not the ordinary power-off command. See Samsung’s app-crash instructions for its current guidance.
Apple Watch, Pixel Watch, and Garmin
Button combinations differ by model and software version, so do not apply another brand’s restart sequence. Use Apple Watch Support, the Google Pixel Watch Help hub, or Garmin’s model-specific freeze and reboot guidance for the exact instructions.

Open the workout app without starting an activity, then try a short test. A restart may clear a temporary lockup, but it cannot be relied on to restore a workout that had not been saved.
Stop and seek help rather than repeatedly rebooting if the watch is swollen, severely hot, physically damaged, has a stuck button, or repeatedly reboots while charging. Samsung advises service when physical damage prevents a restart.

Fix 2: Update the watch, phone, companion app, and workout app
Workout tracking may depend on several pieces working together: watch operating system, phone operating system, companion app, device plugins, workout app, and health-data sync. Updating only the watch can leave a phone-side app or plugin as the weak link. Menu names and update availability vary by model, region, and software version; if a label differs, use the manufacturer’s current support instructions rather than guessing.
Samsung Galaxy Watch update checks
- Open Galaxy Wearable on the phone. If required, tap Settings, then About watch or About band.
- Choose Update watch software or Update band software, then Update now or Download updates manually, as shown on your device.
- Separately check for watch apps and plugins in Galaxy Store through Galaxy Wearable. Samsung documents a path such as Menu/More options → My page → Update.
Samsung says software updating requires a network connection and a Bluetooth connection between watch and phone. Its watch troubleshooting page and app-crash guidance describe the update checks; labels can differ by device.

Other platforms
- Apple Watch: Check Apple’s current update and support instructions rather than relying on a menu path that may have changed.
- Pixel Watch and Fitbit: Check the watch, phone app, relevant Google Health or Fitbit components, and the specific exercise app. Google’s activity-tracking help describes current Pixel Watch tracking. The app name and available features can vary with rollout and device.
- Garmin: Sync with Garmin Connect and check for watch software updates using instructions for your exact model. Garmin’s freeze/reboot guidance is model-specific.
An update may help, but it is not a guaranteed fix and does not prove the previous version caused the problem. If the glitch began just after an update, note that timing and test the remaining steps; an update can also change permissions or expose an incompatibility with a third-party app.
Fix 3: Check GPS, location permissions, and signal conditions
First distinguish the symptom. GPS that takes time to connect is not automatically broken: Google says GPS on Pixel Watch and Fitbit devices may take minutes to acquire a signal, and users can wait or begin an activity while it connects. If the signal drops, the device continues searching. See Google’s workout-tracking guidance and GPS guidance.
- Go outdoors to a place with a reasonably open view of the sky. Indoor workouts are not a useful test of outdoor GPS.
- Start the activity and let the watch remain still briefly while it searches. Avoid repeatedly starting and stopping; that can create partial or duplicate records.
- Confirm location services are enabled and the exercise app has the location permission it needs. After an operating-system or companion-app update, check that permissions remain enabled.
- If the watch is paired to a phone, keep Bluetooth on and the phone nearby for one test. If the model supports both phone-assisted and onboard GPS, compare the modes separately.
- Retry with the built-in workout app. If only one third-party app fails, investigate that app before concluding the watch’s GPS hardware is faulty.
Pixel Watch and Wear OS
On Pixel Watch, swipe down from the watch face and open Settings → Location. Confirm location is on, then review app permissions and Google Location Accuracy. Google says Location Accuracy can combine GPS, Wi-Fi, mobile networks, and sensors; with it off, the watch relies on GPS and sensors, which may be slower or less accurate. See Google’s Pixel Watch location settings. Wear OS permission labels vary by version; Google’s general path is Settings → Apps & notifications → App permissions (Wear OS permissions help).

Apple Watch and iPhone
On iPhone, check Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services, then review the relevant app’s access. Apple says turning off Location Services limits location-dependent app performance; see Apple’s Location Services guidance. Also check the workout app’s health-data permissions. Do not assume every Apple Watch workout requires the iPhone: behavior depends on the watch model, GPS capability, and whether the phone is nearby.
If GPS is slow but eventually works, continue diagnosing the app separately from reception. If the watch works only with the phone nearby, investigate phone-assisted location, Bluetooth, permissions, model limitations, and onboard GPS. GPS failure across multiple outdoor locations and apps is more concerning than a problem isolated to one app, but it still does not by itself prove a hardware fault.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 4: Isolate the app and reduce workout load for a controlled test
Third-party apps, their phone counterparts, or a recent update can destabilize tracking. Samsung lists third-party apps as a possible cause of freezing and recommends removing suspected apps; some platforms also require compatible components on both the phone and watch. See Samsung’s frozen-watch troubleshooting and app-crash guidance.
- Recall what changed shortly before the problem: newly installed or updated apps, a phone update, a new watch face, or changed workout settings.
- Run a short, five- to ten-minute outdoor workout with the watch’s built-in app. Keep the test simple and avoid starting multiple tracking apps at once.
- If that works, test the third-party app separately. Update it, then remove or disable the most recent suspect app if the problem continues.
- Restart both phone and watch, then test again before reinstalling several apps at once. Change one variable at a time so you can tell what mattered.
On Samsung, apps can generally be removed from the connected phone through Galaxy Wearable → Apps or Apps screen (some models place this under Settings). On Wear OS models, touch and hold the app, tap Uninstall, and confirm. Some preinstalled apps cannot be removed; see Samsung’s instructions.
For a diagnostic workout, temporarily relax battery-saving settings and disable optional loads one at a time: music streaming, Bluetooth headphones, LTE/cellular use, navigation, always-on display, or automatic workout detection. Battery and power controls differ across brands, and power saving can trade background activity or location performance for longer battery life. This is a test, not a recommendation to leave power management off permanently. If the crash appears only when GPS, music, LTE, and a third-party app are all active, add those features back one by one to identify the trigger.

Protect activity data before removing apps
Sync first and confirm the workout appears in the phone app. If the platform permits it, export important activities or record key details, and take screenshots of error messages and settings. Uninstalling an app or resetting a watch can remove local information. No restart or reset can guarantee recovery of an activity interrupted before it was saved.
Fix 5: Back up before resetting, or arrange service
A factory reset is a last software step, not the first response. Consider it only after the watch still crashes following a force restart; relevant software is current; app and permission causes have been checked; and the problem occurs across more than one workout or app. Sync and back up first, because a reset can erase local settings and data, require re-pairing, and change cellular activation.
Samsung reset
Samsung says to back up before resetting. On supported Galaxy Watch models, its documented sequence is to unpair the watch, then on the watch open Settings → General → Reset → Reset, and reconnect through Galaxy Wearable. Check for software updates after reconnecting. An LTE Galaxy Watch activated with a QR code may need a new QR code from the carrier after a reset. If the watch cannot open its normal settings, use Samsung’s model-specific recovery guidance rather than applying a universal button sequence.
When to contact the manufacturer
- Apple Watch: Use Apple’s repair and service page for in-person or mail service options and a device-specific estimate. Do not rely on a generic repair price; cost depends on model and coverage. Apple’s page describes AppleCare options, including express replacement where applicable, and battery service subject to plan terms.
- Pixel Watch: Use the Google Pixel Watch Help troubleshooting flow for frozen screens, errors, charging, or service.
- Garmin: Use Garmin’s model-specific support if freezing or reboots persist after software troubleshooting.
- Samsung: Use Samsung’s support and service options if the watch remains unresponsive or the steps do not resolve the issue.
Stop testing and seek service for a swollen battery, severe or unusual heat, suspected water or impact damage, a stuck button, a blank display after charging, or reboots while charging. Service is also appropriate when crashes continue across apps after a clean reset, or GPS fails across multiple apps and open outdoor locations. If the watch is out of support or repair is uneconomic, compare a current replacement only after confirming your model’s age, coverage, and repair estimate.
