There is no universally strongest phone cover glass. Premium Gorilla Glass, AGC Dragontrail, SCHOTT Xensation and Apple’s Ceramic Shield can all be highly durable, while newer glass-ceramic materials are an important emerging option. Sapphire is usually the scratch-resistance leader, but it is not automatically the best material for surviving drops. The phone’s thickness, frame, edges, adhesive, display structure and case often matter as much as the glass brand.
What Gorilla Glass actually is
Gorilla Glass is chemically strengthened specialty cover glass placed above an OLED or LCD panel. During ion exchange, smaller ions near the glass surface are replaced by larger ions. The larger ions create compressive stress at the surface, making cracks harder to start and spread.
The cover glass is only one layer of a display assembly. The underlying panel, touch sensor, adhesive, frame and bezel all influence whether a phone survives an impact. “Gorilla Glass” also describes a family of products, not one fixed specification: Victus, Victus 2, 7i, Armor, Armor 2 and Gorilla Glass Ceramic target different balances of drop resistance, scratch resistance, optical performance and cost.

AGC has reported that Dragontrail was eight times stronger than ordinary cover material and six times stronger than ordinary touchscreen glass in a three-point bending comparison at the same thickness (AGC comparison document). AGC has also described Dragontrail STAR formulations as two to three times stronger than its original Dragontrail formulation (AGC STAR announcement). Those are AGC’s controlled, intra-brand or reference-material comparisons—not a current, independent Dragontrail-versus-Gorilla ranking.
Dragontrail is a legitimate OEM competitor. Whether a particular Dragontrail phone is more durable than a particular Gorilla Glass phone depends on the exact generation, thickness and device design.
SCHOTT Xensation
SCHOTT’s Xensation family includes specialized lithium-aluminosilicate and related cover-glass formulations. Xensation α is marketed for improved chemical strengthening, scratch resistance and rough-surface drop performance (SCHOTT Xensation α information).

Apple Ceramic Shield
Ceramic Shield is Apple’s brand for a ceramic-infused, glass-based cover material developed through an Apple–Corning collaboration. Apple says its Kentucky facility produces cover glass for Apple devices (Apple announcement).
It is not a monolithic sapphire-like ceramic slab, and public information does not provide standardized testing that can rank every Ceramic Shield generation against every Gorilla Glass, Dragontrail or Xensation product. On an iPhone, the frame, screen geometry and adhesive are part of the practical durability result.
Glass-ceramic cover materials
Glass ceramics aim to combine glass-like clarity and thinness with ceramic-related structural and damage-tolerance advantages. Corning launched Gorilla Glass Ceramic in March 2025 and announced Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 in March 2026. Corning says Ceramic 3 survived drops above two meters onto concrete-like surfaces in laboratory testing and identified Motorola’s razr fold as an initial smartphone application (2025 launch; Ceramic 3 announcement).
“Glass ceramic” is a material category, not a guarantee that every glass-ceramic display beats every chemically strengthened glass display.

Sapphire
Synthetic sapphire is crystalline aluminum oxide rather than conventional glass. Its very high hardness makes it excellent for resisting scratches, so it is common on camera covers, watch crystals and specialty devices. Large, thin sapphire display sheets are expensive and difficult to manufacture, and their edge and impact behavior can involve different trade-offs from strengthened glass.
Sapphire is therefore best described as the leading scratch-focused option, not as an automatic winner for drop resistance. There is no standardized public test establishing a universal ranking of full-size sapphire phone screens against the newest Gorilla Glass, Ceramic Shield, Dragontrail and Xensation products.
Tempered-glass screen protectors
An aftermarket protector is a replaceable sacrificial layer, not an OEM replacement for the phone’s cover glass. It can absorb scratches and some face-down impacts, but it cannot reliably protect corners and edges. It may crack while the display remains intact, reduce touch or fingerprint performance, add glare, or lift on curved edges.
“9H” labels normally refer to a pencil-hardness test; they do not mean Mohs hardness 9.

Strength is several different properties
| Property | Meaning | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Hardness | Resistance to indentation and scratching | Higher hardness generally helps against pocket grit and abrasion. |
| Strength | Stress or load before failure | Useful for bending and impact comparisons under defined conditions. |
| Toughness | Ability to absorb energy and resist crack growth | More relevant to surviving a sudden drop. |
| Retained strength | Performance remaining after scratches or abrasion | Shows why a previously damaged screen may fail more easily. |
| Brittleness | Likelihood of sudden fracture rather than deformation | Explains why a very hard material can still chip or shatter. |
A scratch-resistant surface is not necessarily impact-tough. A scratch or chip can also become a stress concentration that helps a later crack start.
What published tests actually show
| Material or product | Published claim | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Gorilla Glass Victus | Up to 2 m drop survival on hard, rough surfaces; up to four-times scratch resistance versus competitive aluminosilicate glass. | Corning laboratory comparison: source. |
| Gorilla Armor | Up to three-times drop performance and more than four-times scratch resistance versus specified competitive cover glass. | Corning laboratory comparison; Armor’s anti-reflective treatment is part of the product: source. |
| Gorilla Armor 2 | Anti-reflective glass-ceramic cover material used in Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. | Device-specific implementation: Corning information; Samsung announcement. |
| Gorilla Glass 7i | Designed for intermediate and value devices; Corning claims up to twice the scratch threshold of competitive lithium-aluminosilicate glass. | Manufacturer test and positioning: product sheet. |
| Xensation Core | 87% versus 7% survival in a specified rough-surface test. | 0.6-mm samples and defined laboratory setup; not general failure odds. |
Drop height, impact surface, angle, sample thickness, number of repetitions and comparator must accompany any numeric claim. A manufacturer’s laboratory pass is not a warranty and cannot be converted into a universal ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Drop resistance versus scratch resistance
For drops, compare the exact phone’s independent tests when available. A corner impact on concrete creates very different stresses from a flat impact on wood or a laboratory pad. A case can protect a phone with less celebrated glass better than a bare phone with nominally stronger glass.

For scratches, hardness and surface coatings matter more. Sapphire generally leads, while premium glass and glass-ceramics can add abrasion resistance and anti-reflective performance. Anti-reflective and oleophobic coatings can wear independently of the glass beneath them.

Why expensive phones still crack
- Large, thin displays have less material to absorb localized stress.
- Curved edges are harder to shield and can expose the glass to direct impacts.
- Corner and edge strikes transfer force differently from face-down drops.
- Existing scratches, chips or manufacturing variation can reduce retained strength.
- Rigid frames, adhesive design and bezel height determine how force reaches the cover glass.
- Concrete and rough surfaces are substantially harsher than many controlled test surfaces.
No cover glass is unbreakable. The front, rear panel and camera cover may also use different materials.
Which option fits your priorities?
If drops are your main concern
- Check independent drop results for the exact phone model.
- Prefer a flat or well-recessed display with a case-compatible raised bezel.
- Look for reinforced corners and a frame that protects the glass edge.
- Consider a recent premium chemically strengthened or glass-ceramic design.
- Compare screen-repair prices and insurance, not just advertised drop height.
If scratches are your main concern
- Choose sapphire where the application supports its cost and impact trade-offs.
- Otherwise prioritize newer premium cover materials with published abrasion data.
- Use a replaceable protector when pocket grit and daily abrasion are the dominant risks.
If optical quality matters
Evaluate glare in sunlight, anti-reflective durability, fingerprint visibility, oleophobic wear, touch response and polarized-sunglasses compatibility. Gorilla Armor and Armor 2 are specifically positioned around anti-reflective performance as well as durability (Armor 2 information).
If value and repair cost matter
Consumers normally cannot buy raw Dragontrail, Xensation or Gorilla Glass separately. The practical costs are the phone, case, protector, repair and insurance. A less expensive phone with strong case protection may create less ownership risk than a premium model with a costly display replacement.
If you are buying a foldable
Foldables are a separate category. Inner displays use multilayer flexible structures and protective layers, while the outer cover may use a different material. Do not assume the cover glass on a conventional phone describes the inner foldable panel.
Why the exact phone matters more than the logo
Manufacturers sometimes identify only “strengthened glass” and omit the supplier or generation. Even when the material is named, practical durability depends on glass thickness, flat versus curved geometry, frame and bezel design, adhesive, display stack, corner shape, assembly variation and case fit. Buyers usually select a device model rather than choosing among raw cover-glass materials.
Should you still use a screen protector?
Yes, if scratches, pocket grit or inexpensive replacement are important. A protector adds a sacrificial surface and may soften some face impacts. It does not make the OEM cover glass unnecessary, and it cannot guarantee protection from a corner strike. Match the protector to the exact model, display curvature, case and fingerprint reader; check its clarity and anti-reflective behavior before installation.
Bottom line
Dragontrail and Xensation are serious Gorilla Glass competitors, and Ceramic Shield is a distinct Apple–Corning implementation rather than a wholly unrelated material. Glass-ceramic products are the most important newer direction. Sapphire is the scratch specialist, not an all-purpose drop champion. For most U.S. buyers, the best durability decision is a current phone with well-protected edges, a compatible case and affordable repair—not a purchase based solely on a glass trademark.
