Yes, Google’s fourth-generation Learning Thermostat is real and commercially available. Its official name is the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen). Google put it on U.S. shelves on August 20, 2024, at a launch price of $279.99. The Google Store displayed a temporary $239.99 price, reduced from $279.99, on August 18, 2026—so treat that as a dated promotion, not a permanent price.
This is a substantial redesign, with a 60% larger borderless display, a redesigned backplate, broader HVAC support, Matter certification, new energy-management features, and one second-generation Nest Temperature Sensor included in the box.
What Google launched
The product is not officially called the “Nest Thermostat (4th Gen).” Google’s full name is Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), which distinguishes it from the less expensive product simply called Nest Thermostat.

Google announced the fourth-generation model in August 2024 and said it would be available in the United States on August 20, 2024. The launch price was $279.99, while the Canadian starting price was $379.99. Check the official Google Store listing for current regional pricing, promotions, taxes and rebates.

Why the fourth-generation model looks different
The most obvious change is the display. It is 60% larger than the previous generation and uses a borderless crystal-lens design that makes the thermostat look more like a decorative wall object than a conventional HVAC controller. Calling it “beautiful” is subjective, but the redesign is clearly the product’s central visual upgrade.
- Display: 2.7-inch circular LCD with 600 × 600-pixel resolution.
- Size: 3.9 inches in diameter and 1.1 inches deep.
- Weight: 5.7 ounces.
- Colors: Polished Silver, Polished Gold and Polished Obsidian.
The thermostat uses a Soli sensor for motion and proximity detection. Its Dynamic Farsight feature can show one item—such as the time, indoor temperature or outdoor weather—when viewed from a distance. As you approach, it can reveal additional information such as humidity or outdoor air quality. The home screen can also be customized.

Adaptive Eco
Adaptive Eco adjusts the temperature when the home is unoccupied while considering how long the system may need to restore the preferred temperature. Google says it may make a smaller adjustment on a cold day and a larger one on a mild day. The goal is to balance comfort and energy use, not simply turn the HVAC system off whenever the house is empty.
Smart Schedule
Smart Schedule creates an initial schedule and learns from household routines and preferences. Depending on your settings, it can update the schedule automatically or suggest changes in the Google Home app.

Natural heating and cooling
Google says the thermostat can account for outdoor conditions that naturally warm or cool a home, potentially reducing unnecessary heating or cooling.
Smart Ventilation
With a compatible ventilation system, the thermostat can bring in outdoor air when conditions are suitable and pause ventilation when outdoor air quality is unhealthy.

Google’s product page says the Nest Learning Thermostat can help save up to 31% on heating and cooling bills. That is Google’s maximum claim, not a guaranteed result. Actual savings depend on climate, insulation, HVAC efficiency, energy prices, temperature settings and household behavior.
The included temperature sensor is a major value difference
Every fourth-generation thermostat includes one Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen). You can use it to prioritize a bedroom at night, a home office during work hours or another room that is consistently warmer or colder than the rest of the house.
The thermostat supports up to six sensors, and older generations of the Nest Temperature Sensor also work with it. Multiple sensors can help represent temperatures across a larger home, although they do not independently heat or cool individual rooms.

Including a sensor makes the fourth-generation model more useful out of the box than a thermostat that requires a separate accessory for room-based temperature prioritization.

The thermostat is designed for most 24-volt systems, including gas, electric, oil, forced-air, heat-pump and radiant systems. Google lists support for a broad range of terminals and equipment, including:
- Heating stages W1, W2 and W3.
- Cooling stages Y1, Y2 and Y3.
- Heat pumps with auxiliary, alternate and emergency heat.
- Fan terminals G, G2 and G3.
- C, RH and RC power connections.
- Humidifier, dehumidifier and ventilation connections.
That does not mean it works with every HVAC installation. Before purchasing or disconnecting your existing thermostat, use Google’s compatibility checker. Heat pumps, zone-controlled systems, heating-only or cooling-only systems, advanced accessory wiring and unusual multi-stage configurations deserve particular caution.
Does it need a C wire?
Usually not, but “no C wire required” is too broad. The fourth-generation model uses Power Sharing and is designed to work without a common wire in most homes. Google says a C wire or Nest Power Connector may be needed in limited cases—fewer than 1% according to its specifications page—but its product information separately warns that some heat-pump, zone-controlled, heating-only and cooling-only systems may need additional power support.
Do not guess based only on the wires visible at the wall. Run the compatibility check, and follow Google’s C-wire and Nest Power Connector guidance. If the system has complex wiring, professional installation is the safer choice.

Installation and app requirements
Setup requires the Google Home app, which provides step-by-step installation instructions. The box includes mounting screws, wire labels, a trim plate and a steel plate, along with the thermostat and temperature sensor.
- Photograph the existing thermostat wiring before disconnecting anything.
- Turn off HVAC power before touching the wires.
- Run Google’s compatibility checker using the existing wiring and system details.
- Use the supplied labels and follow the Google Home installation sequence.
- Choose professional installation if the system is zoned, uses a heat pump or connects humidification, dehumidification or ventilation equipment.
Google supports self-installation, but that does not make every installation simple. A thermostat controls HVAC equipment, so an incorrect connection can cause operational or power problems.
Google Home, Matter and smart-home control
The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) works with Google Home and is Matter-certified. Matter allows supported Matter-enabled smart-home apps and voice assistants to control compatible functions, including basic thermostat control and mode changes.
Matter certification does not guarantee that every Nest-specific feature appears identically in every third-party platform. Features such as learning behavior, Adaptive Eco, detailed scheduling, HVAC monitoring and other Google-specific functions may remain most complete in Google Home.
The thermostat can be controlled through the Google Home app on supported Pixel phones, tablets and watches. Google also highlights control through Pixel Watch and Google TV Streamer.

HVAC monitoring and sustainability
Google promotes HVAC monitoring and alerts that can warn about potential system problems or changes in performance. Treat these as early-warning notifications, not a replacement for professional HVAC diagnosis or maintenance.
The thermostat is ENERGY STAR certified. Google also lists 100% recycled cobalt in the battery, at least 48% recycled materials in the fourth-generation thermostat and included sensor bundle, plastic-free packaging and power consumption of less than 1 kWh per month. These are product and manufacturing claims; they do not guarantee a particular household’s total energy reduction.
Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) vs. the standard Nest Thermostat
The standard Nest Thermostat is the lower-cost Google option for buyers who mainly want remote control and basic smart scheduling. The fourth-generation Learning Thermostat is aimed at buyers who want a larger display, learning features, included room sensing, broader HVAC support and a more advanced Google Home experience.

Who should buy it?
- New smart-thermostat buyers who want Google’s most advanced Nest model.
- Homes with hot or cold rooms that can benefit from the included temperature sensor.
- Google Home households that want automated scheduling and away-temperature adjustments.
- Homes with humidifiers, dehumidifiers or ventilation controls, after compatibility is confirmed.
- Buyers who value the large display and the polished wall design.
Who should keep their current thermostat?
- Your existing Nest is recent and already handles your comfort needs.
- You do not use temperature sensors, advanced scheduling or Matter.
- You are buying mainly for the lowest price.
- Your HVAC wiring is complicated and the current system is reliable.
- The larger display is the only feature that interests you.
Google has announced the end of software and security support for first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats. That announcement does not automatically apply to every older Nest model; check Google’s specific support notice before deciding whether your thermostat needs replacement.
Price and buying advice
The official U.S. launch price was $279.99. The Google Store showed $239.99 on August 18, 2026, but promotions can change. Utility rebates and rewards may also be available because the thermostat is ENERGY STAR certified, although eligibility depends on your provider, location, program dates and installation requirements.
Before buying, use the compatibility checker. If the system passes and you value room sensing, the large display or advanced HVAC controls, the included sensor makes the fourth-generation model easier to justify. If you only need app-based temperature control, the standard Nest Thermostat may offer better value.
Verdict
The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is an official, meaningful redesign—not merely a cosmetic refresh. Its larger display, included sensor, expanded HVAC support, Dynamic Farsight, Matter certification and new energy features make it the strongest Nest option for new buyers and households with uneven room temperatures.
