No—blinker fluid is not real. It is a longstanding practical joke, not a substance used to maintain a car. In May 2024, Google Search’s AI Overview reportedly advised people searching “blinker not making sound” to replace it. Contemporary reporting said the answer could be reproduced and traced it to joking online content—not to an actual automotive repair.
What Google’s AI Overview said
Google announced the U.S. rollout of AI Overviews on May 14, 2024. Days later, a screenshot circulated showing an Overview responding to the query “blinker not making sound” with advice to replace blinker fluid. Futurism reported on May 21 that it reproduced the result. Ars Technica examined the case on May 24 and traced the advice to sarcastic or trolling content on a Good Sam forum.
The source trail matters: the phrase was already present online as a joke. The likeliest explanation, based on those reports and Google’s later account of similar failures, is that the system failed to recognize the satire and summarized it as genuine maintenance advice. That is an inference about how this particular result arose, not a confirmed account of Google’s internal processing.

Why cars do not need blinker fluid
“Blinker” is an informal U.S. term for a turn signal. Turn signals work through electrical components: exterior bulbs or LED assemblies, fuses, a switch, wiring and, depending on the vehicle, a flasher or electronic control module. The familiar clicking sound may come from a relay or be generated electronically as a cabin chime. It is not caused by fluid moving through the car.
There is no standard automotive maintenance fluid called blinker fluid, and there is no reservoir to fill. Bottles labeled with the name may be sold as gag gifts; they are novelty props, not vehicle supplies.

What to do if a turn signal is silent or malfunctioning
A missing click alone does not identify the fault. Some vehicles generate the sound electronically, while a failed exterior lamp, fuse, flasher, stalk switch, wiring connection, ground or body-control module can cause different symptoms. A dashboard indicator, an exterior lamp and the audible click can also fail independently. The right diagnosis depends on the vehicle’s make, model, year and lighting setup.

- Switch on the hazard lights while parked safely. Check whether the front and rear lamps on both sides illuminate.
- Test the left and right signals separately. Compare the dashboard indicators with the exterior lamps. If safe, have someone stand where they can see the lights, or observe them reflected against a wall.
- Note the behavior. Rapid flashing can indicate a lighting-circuit problem, though it is not a universal diagnosis. Also note a signal that does not flash, works intermittently, or triggers a dashboard warning.
- Consult the owner’s manual. It gives the correct fuse and lamp information and vehicle-specific instructions. Do not assume a fuse location, bulb number or relay procedure from another car.
- Replace a lamp only if your vehicle has a replaceable bulb and the manual identifies the correct specification. Many modern vehicles use LED assemblies or electronic controls instead.
- Do not pour liquid anywhere in the lighting system. If the signal remains faulty or intermittent, have a qualified repair shop inspect it before relying on it in traffic.
Aftermarket LED conversions or trailer wiring can also affect signal behavior. These possibilities are not a diagnosis; use manufacturer information or a qualified technician when the cause is unclear.

Google’s response—and what it does not prove
On May 30, 2024, Google acknowledged that some AI Overviews had misinterpreted language, included satirical or troll content and presented inaccurate information. The company said it had made more than a dozen technical improvements, including better detection of nonsensical queries, reduced reliance on misleading user-generated content and tighter restrictions on when Overviews appear. Google’s update describes those measures; its May 14 announcement explains the initial expansion of AI Overviews.
That is evidence Google addressed a class of problems, not proof that every related error was permanently eliminated. The 2024 reports also do not establish whether a particular blinker-fluid query produces the same result in Google Search today. Google’s Search products have continued to evolve since the launch, but a historical incident is not a current test.

What the episode tells us about AI search
The failure was more than a silly answer. It showed how a search summary can strip a joke of its context, give a low-quality forum comment the appearance of authority, and make retrieval look like verification. An answer can accurately find a page that mentions a claim while still presenting the claim as fact.
