The concern is real, but “clear them from your phone” is misleading. Google is rolling out Search Services History, where a setting called Save Media can retain images, files, audio, and video from interactions with Search services. Google says saved history may help develop and improve AI models. This is an account-level control—not a switch that scans or clears every file stored on your phone. Check it first, then review Gemini and Google Photos separately.
What Google may save—and which setting controls it
Google’s new Search Services History covers activity across Google Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News. It can include queries and viewed results, as well as activity from AI Mode and Ask Maps. Depending on how you use those services, it may also include Google Lens images, voice-search recordings and transcripts, Search Live recordings, Translate speaking-practice audio, and files or media you upload during an interaction. Google’s description of Search Services History explains the activity covered.
Save Media is a subsetting of Search Services History. It controls whether images, files, audio, and video from Search-service interactions are saved with that history. It does not control every kind of Google activity, every app, or every copy of a file.
This is not evidence that Google indiscriminately scans every file stored on every phone. The documented feature concerns material from interactions with Google services—for example, media submitted through Lens, voice search, Search Live, Translate practice, or an upload. Gemini can also receive information when you connect apps, use screen actions, share a screenshot, upload a file, or use Gemini Live with video, audio, or screensharing.

Google says Search Services History may be used to develop and improve AI models and related services. That is different from the temporary processing needed to answer a request, personalizing a service, and other uses such as abuse prevention. Turning off a history control limits the uses described for that setting; it does not mean Google cannot process information you deliberately submit to provide a service.
Turn off Save Media first
- Go to My Google Activity and sign in to the right Google Account.
- Select Search Services History.
- Find Save Media and uncheck it.
- Return to Search Services History and review saved items. Delete items you no longer want stored.
With Save Media off, future media from Search-service interactions will not be saved to Search Services History. That does not necessarily stop text history or transcripts from being saved if the broader history setting remains on. Nor does it delete media already saved: deletion is a separate step. Google may still process media temporarily to provide the requested feature or maintain safety. See Google’s Save Media instructions for details.
Want to reduce Search history more broadly? In My Google Activity, open Search Services History, turn the setting off, and choose Turn off and delete activity if you also want to delete the existing Search Services History. Follow the confirmation prompts. Search may become less personalized, and features that rely on past activity may work differently. This does not turn off Gemini Apps Activity, YouTube History, Chrome history, Timeline, or every other Google history setting. Google’s Search Services History help page describes this control.

Search Services History is rolling out gradually, so labels and availability can differ by account, app version, platform, and location. Google says the new settings are based on earlier Web & App Activity and Search Personalization choices. Some users may find a new setting enabled as it rolls out because of their previous account choices; that is not the same as saying it is enabled for everyone.
If you do not see Search Services History or Save Media, update the Google app and check your account settings at Google Account. Review Web & App Activity and My Activity as well. The older control may still be relevant while the new interface is unavailable. Do not assume that the account has no saved activity just because the new label is missing. Gemini has a separate activity control
Search Services History does not govern everything you do in Gemini. Gemini Apps Activity can include prompts, responses, suggestions, and information about how a response was generated. If you use Gemini Live or share files, images, audio, video, or your screen, the related material or transcripts may also be part of Gemini activity.
To stop future Gemini activity from being saved in the usual way:
- Open Gemini.
- Open Settings & help.
- Select Activity.
- Turn Keep Activity off.
- Separately review and delete existing items at Gemini Apps Activity.
Turning Keep Activity off is prospective; it does not erase your existing Gemini conversations or uploads. Google says conversations may still be retained for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback. Deletion starts removal from Google products and storage systems, but does not guarantee removal of information already reviewed or incorporated into model-improvement processes. There is a usability trade-off: with Keep Activity off, some connected apps and integrated services—including Workspace apps, Photos, Maps, Home, YouTube, and Spotify—may not be available in Gemini. Google lists utilities, Phone, Messages, and WhatsApp among app categories that remain available. Check the current list in your account before changing the setting.
Disconnect sensitive apps from Gemini
If you want to keep Gemini history on but limit what it can draw from, review the apps connected through Gemini’s Personal Intelligence settings. Disconnect Gmail, Google Photos, Drive, Calendar, Contacts, Keep, Maps, or any other source you would not want used to personalize responses or contribute to possible model improvement.

Google says it does not train directly on the full Gmail inbox, full Drive or Workspace content, or raw imagery and audio in a Google Photos library. It may use summaries, excerpts, generated media, and inferences derived from connected content. Some short or especially relevant emails or files may be represented by a summary that is nearly the entire item. Google also warns users not to connect apps containing confidential information they would not want used for generative-AI training or reviewed by trained service providers. Disconnecting an app does not delete Gemini Apps Activity or data in the connected service, and changes can take days to show in Gemini. Delete the relevant Gemini activity separately if you want to remove saved conversations or uploads.
Google Photos’ Gemini features are another distinct case
Google’s Photos notice says it does not train generative-AI models outside Google Photos directly on personal Photos imagery and audio, and that Photos data is not used for ads. But Photos’ Gemini features can involve other information: face-group labels, names and relationships, Remember List details, inferred insights, Ask Photos queries, and feedback. If Photos content is connected to Gemini or Search, those services’ policies apply to information they receive; summaries, inferences, and generated media based on Photos content may be used there.
To review Photos-specific controls, open Google Photos and go to profile picture → Photos settings → Preferences → Gemini features in Photos. Review Ask Photos Activity, Remember List, and face-group names and relationships, along with any available query-review or feedback controls. The controls here apply to Photos features; they are not a universal opt-out for a picture separately uploaded to Gemini or submitted through Search. See Google Photos’ Gemini privacy notice.
Deleting an image from Google Photos alone may not delete a separate copy uploaded to Gemini, an item in Gemini Apps Activity, Search Services History media, or a copy held by another connected service. Find the product or account history that received the item and delete it there too.

What happens to data already saved—or used for training?
Turning off a setting does not automatically erase its past. Turn off Save Media to stop future media from being saved, then delete previously saved items separately. Turn off Search Services History and choose the delete option if you want to remove that service’s existing account history. Delete Gemini Apps Activity separately, and use Photos’ own activity controls for Photos features.
Google says media selected for AI training is disconnected from the user’s account, and may be retained for up to four years, even if the original activity is later deleted. Google says it applies filters intended to remove identifying or sensitive information. Account-history deletion therefore cannot promise that material already selected for model improvement will be withdrawn from that process.
There is also a feedback exception: Google says future activity will not be used to train generative-AI models when Search Services History or Save Media is off, unless you provide feedback. Avoid submitting screenshots, prompts, images, or conversations containing sensitive material as feedback. Google also says media used offline may be saved to the account once the device reconnects, depending on the applicable settings.

Android and iPhone settings let you restrict a Google app’s future access to the camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos and videos, or files. That can prevent or limit new access and may disable features that need those permissions. But operating-system permissions are not AI-training controls, and revoking them does not delete content already uploaded or activity already saved to your Google Account.
For this concern, start with the account-level history and Gemini controls. Treat phone permissions as a secondary step: keep only the access you need for the app’s features.

Work, school, and shared accounts
For a work or school account, an administrator may control Gemini Apps Activity and retention settings, so a personal-account path or switch may be absent or locked. Google’s Workspace commitments say Workspace data used within Gemini for Workspace is not used to train or improve underlying generative-AI models outside Workspace without permission under the applicable commitments. That protection should not be generalized to every Google product or account: deliberately sharing Workspace information with consumer Gemini Apps or Search Personal Intelligence can bring different policies into play. Check with your administrator and review the terms for the specific product. See Google’s Workspace privacy information.
If you use several Google Accounts or a shared device, verify which account is active before changing settings or deleting history. Google notes that Search Services History can include activity associated with another account when accounts are shared or multiple accounts are signed in in a browser or device.
Choose the change that fits your priority

If you handle medical or legal records, financial documents, passwords or recovery codes, children’s or intimate images, identity or immigration documents, or confidential client and workplace material, the safest choice is not to submit it to an AI feature or connect the account that stores it. For stronger separation, store sensitive material locally or with a provider whose current privacy terms and encryption features fit your needs. A VPN does not stop Google from receiving media you intentionally upload to Google Search, Lens, Photos, or Gemini.

Auto-delete is not the same as opting out: Gemini Apps Activity’s default auto-delete period is 18 months, with 3-, 18-, and 36-month options. That limits account retention but does not replace turning off future saving or address data already selected for model improvement. A Google One subscription is also not an AI-training opt-out.
