Yes—eligible U.S. personal Gmail users can now change the username before @gmail.com while keeping the same Google Account. Gmail messages, Drive files, Photos, YouTube history, Play purchases and other account data remain with the account. The previous address also stays attached as an alternate address, so this is not a complete identity wipe.
Google announced the U.S. rollout on March 31, 2026, but says the control may not yet be available on every account. The definitive test is whether your account displays Change Google Account email. Google’s announcement and its Help Center instructions describe the current limits and process.
What actually changes
This feature changes the Google Account’s main Gmail username—not merely the name people see in messages.

For example, [email protected] can become [email protected] on the same account. The old address becomes an alternate address, and both addresses use the same mailbox and Google Account.

If your only problem is the name recipients see, change your Google Account or Gmail sender name instead. That lower-risk change does not alter your sign-in address.
Who can use the change
- Your current address must end in
@gmail.com, and the replacement must also be a Gmail address. - Google has launched the feature for users in the United States, but availability is being enabled at the individual-account level.
- Personal accounts are the intended case. Work, school and other administrator-managed accounts may require an administrator or may not support the same option.
- The username must be unused, must not be a previously used-and-deleted Gmail address, and cannot be one of Google’s reserved names.
If Change Google Account email is missing, Google says changing the address may not be possible for that account yet. That can mean the account is outside the rollout, is managed by an organization, is not a Gmail account, or you are viewing the wrong Google Account.
How to change your Gmail address
Desktop or mobile browser
- Sign in to the account you want to change.
- Open myaccount.google.com/google-account-email, or choose your profile picture, Manage your Google Account, Personal info, Email, then Google Account email.
- Select Change Google Account email.
- Enter the new username.
- Select Change email, then confirm with Yes, change email if prompted.
- Complete any remaining on-screen instructions.
The requested username must satisfy Google’s availability rules. If the name is taken, was previously deleted, or is reserved, Google may suggest alternatives.

Google app
In the Google app, tap your profile picture, choose Manage your Google Account, open Personal info → Email → Google Account email, and look for Change Google Account email. Labels can vary between Android, iPhone and app versions. If the control is absent, use the desktop path and check again later.
What stays intact
Google says the existing account data is preserved:
- Gmail messages and the existing mailbox
- Google Drive files
- Google Photos
- YouTube data and history
- Google Play purchases
- Contacts and other data associated with the account
You can sign in to Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Drive, Google Play and other Google services with either the old or new address. Mail sent to either address arrives in the same inbox; this does not create a second independent mailbox. Recipients can see which address was used by checking the message’s To field. You can also send from either address.

What does not automatically change
The change is not a global rewrite of every historical record. Google gives older Calendar events as an example: they may continue to show the previous address. Shared files, invitations and profiles created elsewhere may likewise retain the old address until a service updates them.

Third-party sign-ins and device risks
Your Gmail address may be the identity attached to financial, shopping, work, school, gaming and social accounts that offer Sign in with Google. Google warns that some services or features may need troubleshooting; it does not say that every third-party account will fail.

- List important services that use the address for login or recovery.
- Check each service’s registered email and recovery settings.
- Confirm that Sign in with Google still recognizes the account.
- Keep access to both Gmail addresses while testing.
- Review saved credentials in Google Password Manager.
Google specifically calls out Chromebook users and people using Chrome Remote Desktop. Back up contacts, photos, Android data, Chrome sync data and Timeline data as a precaution. The Associated Press reports that some Chromebook problems may clear after several hours; persistent problems may require switching back to the previous address. AP’s report covers those device and sign-in concerns.
Important limits

You may remove the old address as a sending alias if you no longer want to send from it, but it remains an alternate account address. The 12-month and total-address limits mean the new username should not be treated as a temporary experiment.
Before you confirm: a safety checklist
- Choose a username you can live with for at least a year.
- Export or otherwise back up important Google data.
- Save recovery codes and verify the recovery phone number and alternate email in Google Security Checkup.
- Review Chromebook, Chrome Remote Desktop and Chrome sync dependencies.
- Audit external accounts that use the Gmail address for sign-in or recovery.
- Update password-manager records and browser profiles.
- Tell important contacts about the new address.
- Decide whether mail to the old address should remain in the inbox or be filtered.
- Avoid making the change immediately before travel, an account-recovery event or a critical deadline.
How to switch back
You can restore the previous address as the main Google Account email:

- Go to myaccount.google.com.
- Choose Email, then Google Account email.
- Find the previous address and select Make this your Google Account email.
Switching back is allowed at any time, but it does not erase the newer address from the account.
Change the address or create a new account?

Common problems and recovery
The change button is missing
- Confirm the address ends in
@gmail.com. - Open the official account-email page while signed in to the intended account.
- Try a desktop browser.
- Confirm you are using a personal U.S. account rather than an organization-managed account.
- Check again later instead of immediately creating a new account.
A third-party service no longer recognizes you
Try signing in with the old Gmail address, inspect the service’s email and login settings, and use its recovery process if needed. Keep both addresses available. If a Google or device feature remains broken, switch back to the previous Google Account email.
You regret the username
Restore the old address using the switch-back path above. The newer address will remain attached, and Google’s annual and total-change limits prevent unlimited experimentation.

Bottom line
For an eligible U.S. personal Gmail account, changing the username is now a way to get a more professional address without migrating an established Google Account. It preserves the core mailbox and data, but the old address remains active and the change can affect sign-ins, devices and historical records. Make a backup, audit important services and choose the new username carefully before confirming.
