Google Wallet’s move toward app-managed notifications began rolling out in June 2024, and Google now documents controls inside Wallet. To manage them, open Google Wallet → profile picture or account icon → Wallet settings → Manage Wallet notifications. The change affects how Wallet alerts are controlled and delivered; it does not itself change tap-to-pay.
What changed with Google Wallet notifications?
In June 2024, 9to5Google reported that Wallet transaction and other alerts were beginning to come from Google Wallet rather than the previously associated Google Play services notification flow. The report said the rollout became more widely available on June 10, 2024. That backend description comes from the reporting, while Google’s current help documentation confirms that users can manage Wallet push notifications in the app.
For users, the practical difference is that Wallet has its own notification controls. These sit alongside Android’s system-level permission and notification-channel settings: enabling alerts inside Wallet will not make them appear if Android blocks notifications for the app.

What kinds of alerts can Wallet send?
Google describes Wallet notifications broadly as covering transactions, passes, and other activity. During the 2024 rollout, 9to5Google observed these six categories in Wallet’s notification-management flow; they are not guaranteed to appear under the same labels on every current device:
- Purchases: Alerts about transactions made with Wallet. Google documents a separate purchase-notification control.
- Passes: Activity related to saved passes, such as boarding passes, event tickets, or loyalty cards. Updates depend on the pass and its provider.
- Transit: Transit activity or provider updates where supported. Available functions vary by transit agency and region.
- Updates & alerts: Other Wallet-related notices, which may include payment-method or pass events.
- Tips: Guidance about using Wallet.
- Promotional campaigns: Offers or promotional messages, distinct from purchase alerts you may want to keep.

How to manage Wallet notifications
Adjust Wallet notification controls
- Open Google Wallet.
- Tap your profile picture or account icon in the top-right corner.
- Tap Wallet settings.
- Tap Manage Wallet notifications.
- Change the controls shown for the notification types you want to receive.
Google documents this path in its Wallet notification help. The controls visible to you may differ from the six labels observed during the rollout.
Turn purchase notifications on or off
For purchase alerts specifically, open Wallet, tap your profile picture or account icon, choose Wallet settings, then switch Purchase notifications on or off. Google lists this as a separate control in its purchase-notification instructions.

If “Manage Wallet notifications” is missing
Try these checks in order. The force-stop step was suggested during the 2024 rollout; it is an optional refresh, not a guaranteed fix for every current device.
- Update Wallet: Open Google Play, find Google Wallet, and install an available update.
- Check Android permission: In Android Settings, open Apps → Google Wallet → Notifications and make sure notifications are allowed. Exact labels vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Refresh Wallet: Open Android’s Google Wallet app-info screen, tap Force stop, then reopen Wallet and look in settings again.
- Restart the phone: Reopen Wallet after the restart and check the settings path again.
- Inspect notification channels: Under Android Settings → Apps → Google Wallet → Notifications, check whether relevant channels are disabled. Device makers may organize or name channels differently.
If the setting still does not appear, availability may depend on the device, account, app configuration, or region. Google notes that Wallet features are not available everywhere; consult its availability information.

Wallet alerts are separate from bank and provider notifications
- Bank or card-issuer alerts: These come from the bank’s app, text, or email system. Changing a Google Wallet setting does not necessarily change them.
- Pass-provider updates: Flight changes, event notices, and transit information depend on the airline, venue, transit agency, or other provider. Saving a pass in Wallet does not guarantee live updates.
- Android notifications: The phone’s app permission and channel settings can block Wallet alerts even when Wallet’s own controls are enabled.
Transit features and integrations vary by provider and location; Google explains those limits in its transit guidance.

There is no indication in the cited sources that the notification change alters tap-to-pay. Turning off Wallet purchase notifications does not remove a saved payment card or switch off NFC; it can simply mean you do not receive that immediate Wallet alert. Google Wallet remains an app for supported payment cards, passes, tickets, keys, IDs, and other items, with availability varying by region. Availability, Wear OS, and privacy considerations
The June 2024 report suggested that Wallet-originated notifications could be better positioned to appear on Wear OS. Treat that as a potential benefit, not a guarantee: watch and phone settings, device compatibility, and the particular notification can affect delivery.
Wallet features, transit integrations, and supported items vary by country, issuer, provider, and device. Google’s availability page outlines regional limits. If your concern is promotional or personalized Wallet activity rather than notification delivery, Google provides separate controls for Wallet data and privacy and Wallet website settings, including promotional controls.
