Yes—Google’s current Pixel Tablet support documentation says eligible tablets can use VPN by Google at no extra cost in supported countries or regions. Open Settings → Network & internet → VPN → VPN by Google, then review the disclosures and tap Use VPN. Availability depends on more than the tablet model: country, account, software, and device security status can all matter.
This is VPN by Google, the Pixel-integrated service—not the former VPN by Google One, which Google discontinued in the Google One app on June 20, 2024. You do not need a Google One subscription for the current Pixel service where it is supported.
VPN by Google and VPN by Google One are different
Older guides and user reports may refer to VPN by Google One, a subscription feature that Google discontinued in the Google One app on June 20, 2024. The service now documented for the Pixel Tablet is VPN by Google, accessed from the tablet’s network settings. Google says it is available at no extra cost on eligible Pixel devices in supported locations. A Google One plan is not required. That distinction also explains conflicting older coverage. During the 2024 rollout, reports described Pixel Tablet compatibility problems and workarounds. Google’s current documentation now explicitly includes the tablet; old sideloading advice is not the right first step.

How to turn on Google VPN on Pixel Tablet
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & internet, then VPN.
- Select VPN by Google.
- Review the service disclosures and requested permissions.
- Tap Use VPN.
When connected, a key icon appears at the top of the screen. Menu wording can vary slightly by Android version or language; if you do not see the option, search Settings for VPN.
To disconnect, return to Settings → Network & internet → VPN → VPN by Google and turn off Use VPN. Some supported implementations may offer a Quick Settings tile, but its presence and label are not guaranteed across Pixel Tablet software builds, so use Settings if you cannot find one.
Availability: country, account, and device requirements
Google lists these supported home countries or regions for VPN by Google: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The list can change, so check the live Google availability page if your location is not listed here.

Google says an eligible personal Google Account or Workspace account is required, though a Workspace administrator can restrict the service. Supervised accounts, such as a child’s account, may not be eligible. Google also lists rooted devices, unlocked bootloaders, outdated security updates, and beta or unofficial Android builds among the conditions that can prevent use. A tablet bought in a supported country does not by itself guarantee access: the Google Account’s associated country and other eligibility checks matter. Google points users to the Country version shown on its Terms of Service page to check the account country.
If your home country is supported, the VPN may continue to work while you travel in supported locations. In an unsupported travel location, Google says it may try to connect but will not work. Check Google’s live section on where the VPN is available when traveling rather than relying on a static travel list.
Exclude an app if it does not work through the VPN
You can exempt individual apps, for example if one needs your normal network address or behaves poorly through the VPN:

- Go to Settings → Network & internet → VPN → VPN by Google.
- Tap Exclude selected apps.
- Tap Add beside the app you want to exempt.
Return to the same list to remove an app from the exclusions and route it through the VPN again. An excluded app is not protected by Google’s VPN. Google also provides an Exclude carrier apps option for carrier or internet-provider apps that need their assigned network. That is usually less relevant on a Wi-Fi-only tablet, but may matter for carrier-dependent services.
What the VPN does—and what it does not
Google describes the service as a way to help protect internet activity and data from risks such as hackers on public Wi-Fi or unfamiliar internet providers. It applies across apps and browsers unless you exclude traffic. It can be useful as an additional layer when connecting to a shared network, but it does not make you anonymous or protect against every online threat.
A VPN does not replace strong account security, device updates, phishing awareness, careful app permissions, or secure websites. It cannot prevent an account from being compromised or stop a service you sign into from associating activity with your account. Google also warns that VPN use may reduce speed, increase latency and data use, and affect battery life; the actual effect depends on the network and how you use the tablet.

It is not a country-selection or streaming-unblocking tool. Google explicitly says you cannot change your IP location with VPN by Google to access content unavailable in your region. If you need a selectable exit country, regional access, advanced controls, or VPN coverage for other devices, consider a reputable third-party VPN instead. That means choosing another provider and accepting its account, privacy policy, app, and possibly subscription terms. If VPN by Google is missing or will not connect
Work through these checks in order:
- Check the connection. Make sure the tablet has working internet access; try loading a webpage before troubleshooting the VPN.
- Update and restart. Install available official Android and security updates, then restart the tablet.
- Check the account. Confirm you are using an eligible personal or Workspace account. A Workspace administrator may block access, and supervised accounts may be ineligible.
- Check location eligibility. Confirm the account’s associated country is supported and consult Google’s current country and travel lists.
- Check device integrity and software. Rooting, an unlocked bootloader, outdated security updates, or beta/unofficial Android software can prevent access.
- Try another Wi-Fi network. This helps distinguish a network issue from an account or device eligibility issue.
- Check for another VPN. Disconnect or temporarily remove another active VPN profile, then try Google’s VPN again.
- Use an alternative if needed. If the option remains absent after these checks, follow Android’s supported setup for a third-party VPN or contact Pixel support.
Changing the tablet’s region, using another VPN to appear to be somewhere else, or sideloading an APK is not a dependable fix for account or device eligibility. Start with Google’s supported Settings path and current official software instead.

When the built-in option is enough
VPN by Google is a straightforward choice if you have an eligible Pixel Tablet, want basic network protection—particularly on public Wi-Fi—and do not need to choose a country or manage a VPN across other devices. If your priority is streaming access, broad household coverage, or advanced configuration, compare third-party services carefully and check their current terms and renewal costs. For many eligible tablet owners, however, the included Google option is the sensible first thing to try.
