Google Text-to-Speech is not one single product. On Android, it usually means the Google Speech Services engine used by accessibility features and compatible apps. On Chromebooks, it includes Select-to-speak and ChromeOS voice settings. For developers, Google Cloud Text-to-Speech is a separate, usage-billed API.
For most U.S. Android users, start at Settings → Accessibility → Text-to-speech output. The exact location and labels can vary by manufacturer and Android version.
Choose the Google text-to-speech product you need

Android Speech Services may be preinstalled and can be updated through Google Play. The current Play listing is Speech Recognition & Synthesis. Cloud Text-to-Speech is separate from the device engine and requires a Google Cloud project with billing enabled.
Android: set up Google Text-to-Speech in four steps
1. Select the speech engine
- Open Settings.
- Open Accessibility.
- Select Text-to-speech output.
- Under Preferred engine, select Google’s engine, commonly labeled Speech Recognition & Synthesis from Google or a similar name.
Google’s official Android path is documented in its Android text-to-speech help page. Some phones place the control under Settings → System → Languages & input → Text-to-speech output. If you cannot find it, search Settings for text-to-speech, speech output, or TTS.

The engine list can include Google’s engine, a manufacturer’s engine, and third-party engines installed from Google Play. Menu names and available engines vary by device, Android release, manufacturer customization, and organizational policies.
2. Choose a language and install voice data
- Open the language setting inside Text-to-speech output.
- Choose English (United States) for a U.S. English language-region setting.
- Select Install voice data if it is available.
- Download the required language or voice package, preferably over Wi-Fi.
- Return to the engine settings and select an available voice or variant.
English (United States) identifies a language and region; it does not guarantee one particular voice. The number of voices and whether they work offline depend on the phone, Android version, selected engine, language, and installed data.
Offline voice data is different from a voice that requires online processing. If a voice is unavailable without an internet connection, choose a locally installed standard voice where available.

Android commonly provides controls for:
- Speech rate: how quickly words are spoken.
- Pitch: how high or low the voice sounds.
- Volume: controlled through the device’s media-volume settings on many phones.
- Preview or demonstration: a short playback for checking the configuration.
Start at the default rate and make small adjustments. Increasing the speed too far can reduce comprehension, particularly for screen-reader users, language learners, and technical material. Test both a short sentence and a longer passage rather than judging the voice from a single word.

4. Test the voice in the app you actually use
Use the built-in demonstration or Play control first. Then test the voice in the target app—for example, an ebook reader, translation app, screen reader, or accessibility feature.
If it fails, check the following in order:
- Turn up media volume and check that the phone is not muted.
- Confirm that Google’s engine is still selected.
- Verify that voice data finished downloading.
- Connect to the internet if the selected voice requires online processing.
- Update Speech Recognition & Synthesis through Google Play.
- Close and reopen the app producing speech.
- Restart the phone.
- Test another compatible app to determine whether the problem is system-wide or app-specific.
- Check the app’s own narration, accessibility, or voice settings.
Chromebook: enable Select-to-speak
- Select the time in the lower-right corner.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Under Text-to-Speech, open Text-to-Speech voice settings.
- Turn on Select-to-speak.
- Open Select-to-speak settings to choose the language and voice.
Use Google’s current ChromeOS accessibility instructions for the current selection gesture or keyboard behavior, since shortcuts can change between ChromeOS releases.
ChromeOS may offer built-in ChromeOS voices, eSpeak voices, and natural voices. Natural voices can require an internet connection and may be installed through the ChromeOS built-in text-to-speech extension. Google states that selected text can be sent to Google for processing when an online natural voice is used.

Changing the speech language may not be enough to read another language correctly. Google notes that the Chromebook’s system language may also need to be changed.

When Android or Chromebook TTS is not enough: Google Cloud Text-to-Speech
Google Cloud Text-to-Speech is for developers and organizations that need to generate audio programmatically. It accepts plain text or SSML and can produce formats such as MP3, Linear16, and OGG Opus. Integration is available through REST, gRPC, and client libraries, with features varying by voice family and model.

Voice and regional selection
Cloud requests can specify a language code such as en-US, an optional voice name, and an optional gender preference. Using en-US is more precise for U.S. English than assuming a generic English selection. Google warns that the service may substitute another regional voice if the requested voice is unavailable; check the current voice-selection documentation.

<speak>Your appointment is at <break time="500ms"/> 10:30 a.m.</speak>SSML support is not identical across every model or voice family. Google’s pricing rules state that spaces, newlines, and most SSML markup count toward billing, while the <mark> tag is treated differently under those rules.
Cloud pricing
Pricing below was listed by Google on August 18, 2026; verify the current pricing page before deployment. Google’s displayed categories included:

Check Google’s current pricing page. Billing must be enabled, allowances can be model-specific, and other Google Cloud services can create additional charges. Google also advertises up to $300 in credits for eligible new Google Cloud customers, subject to current offer terms.

Privacy, accessibility, and offline considerations
Do not assume every Google voice has the same privacy or offline behavior. On ChromeOS, Google specifically states that selected text may be sent to Google for processing when an online natural voice is used. Avoid sending passwords, medical information, confidential workplace text, or other sensitive material through that mode.

For accessibility, speech rate should be fast enough to remain efficient but slow enough to preserve comprehension. Android’s system engine supports compatible accessibility features, but Google Assistant, Google Maps, TalkBack, Play Books, and third-party apps may not all use the same voice control. An app can override or bypass the system default.
Google Cloud alternatives for developers
Microsoft Azure Speech offers neural voices, REST APIs, SDKs, Speech Studio, and custom-voice options. It is a sensible comparison for teams already using Azure, but unnecessary complexity for someone who only wants Android read-aloud.
Amazon Polly offers standard, neural, long-form, and generative voice categories. AWS’s cited pricing page listed Neural TTS at $19.20 per million characters outside the free tier for the relevant displayed category; confirm the applicable U.S. rate on the current Polly pricing page. Polly is generally most convenient for AWS-native teams.

Which option should you use?
- Need read-aloud on an Android phone? Configure Speech Recognition & Synthesis under Text-to-speech output.
- Need selected text read on a Chromebook? Enable Select-to-speak and choose a ChromeOS voice.
- Need generated audio files, SSML, automation, or an app integration? Evaluate Google Cloud Text-to-Speech.
- Need enterprise or multi-cloud development? Compare Google Cloud, Azure Speech, and Amazon Polly based on your existing infrastructure, supported voices, privacy requirements, and billing model.
