In May 2024, Google Search appeared to recommend putting glue on pizza so cheese would stick. Other viral AI Overviews suggested eating a small rock for minerals and repeated a false claim about Barack Obama. The screenshots were funny, but they exposed a serious weakness: a search summary can turn a joke, a misleading source or an old falsehood into confident-sounding advice.
These failures were not all cases of an AI inventing information from nowhere. In several, the system seems to have found real webpages but lost the context that told readers those pages were joking, satirical or unreliable.
What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google displays near the top of some Search results. They are intended to give users key information about a query and link to webpages for more detail. They are not the ordinary blue-link results or featured snippets, and they are distinct from Google’s conversational AI product, AI Mode, though Google presents both as parts of its AI Search experience. The feature appears selectively rather than on every search. Google’s description of AI Overviews says its systems aim to show them where a generative answer may add value and confidence is sufficient.

Screenshots spread rapidly because the interface looked familiar and authoritative, while the answers were so absurd that they made instant memes. A screenshot, however, is a record of a particular query and moment—not proof that every version of a circulating example was genuine, or that the same result still appears now.

The viral examples, and what was behind them
Glue on pizza: a joke turned into a recommendation
The best-known example involved a query about getting cheese to stick to pizza. The Overview reportedly recommended adding glue. Reporting traced the suggestion to a joking Reddit comment; Google later acknowledged that its system had surfaced sarcastic or “troll-y” forum content as if it were useful information. Google’s May 2024 account described the case as an example of a rare query producing an unusual result.
The key failure was not simply that a model made up a recipe. The system appears to have retrieved a real comment, then summarized it without preserving the joke. That is context collapse: the words remain, but the intent that makes them understandable disappears. Glue is not a food ingredient; the screenshot was unsafe misinformation, not culinary advice.
“Eat rocks”: satire presented as health guidance
Another widely shared Overview said people should eat a small rock daily for minerals or digestive benefits. The claim was linked to satirical material, including an Onion-style joke about geologists recommending rocks. Reporting on the viral blunders described the satirical source behind the claim.

This was more than an absurd answer: it presented a joke as health guidance. Health claims need stronger evidence and safeguards than ordinary trivia. Google says it applies a higher bar to “Your Money or Your Life” subjects such as health and may encourage users to seek expert advice or verify information, but the episode showed that safeguards can fail to preserve context. Do not eat rocks on the basis of a search summary.
A false claim about Barack Obama
The Washington Post reported reproducing an Overview that claimed former President Barack Obama was Muslim, a falsehood circulated for years. Google said it removed the generated misinformation. The Washington Post’s reporting documented the example.
A pizza joke is embarrassing; a false claim about a public figure can reinforce political misinformation. The cases need not share the same technical cause: errors can arise from retrieval, source interpretation, ranking or generation. What they share is the way an AI summary can give an existing claim new authority.

Other reported failures
Journalists also reported examples involving invented automotive advice such as “blinker fluid,” a mistaken date calculation, implausible claims about dogs playing professional sports and dangerous ingredients in deliberately absurd recipes. Ars Technica documented several such cases, including material from comedy sources. These were reported examples, not a complete or independently verified catalogue of every screenshot shared online.

Why did AI Overviews make these mistakes?
“Hallucination” is often used as a catch-all, but it obscures several different steps. A generative search system has to find candidate information, judge its relevance and reliability, interpret what a source means, assemble an answer, and communicate uncertainty. A failure at any stage can produce a polished but wrong result.
- Retrieval from low-context sources: Search can surface forums and other user-generated pages alongside reference material. Such pages can contain useful firsthand knowledge, but also jokes, outdated advice and trolling. In the pizza case, reporting said the answer appeared to draw on a Reddit post in a sparse search environment.
- Missed satire or sarcasm: A person recognizes an Onion article or a troll comment as a joke from its context. A system may treat its literal wording as candidate evidence if retrieval, ranking or safety checks do not identify the source’s intent.
- Rare or unusual queries: Google said some viral examples arose from unusual questions few people had asked. When relevant, trustworthy material is scarce, an anomalous result can have disproportionate influence.
- Confident synthesis: The Overview did not merely point to a dubious page. It restated the content in a concise, declarative voice. That can make a weak source look like a checked conclusion or broad consensus.
- Insufficient safeguards: Google identified nonsensical queries, user-generated content, hard-news topics and health-related searches as areas for improvement. The Obama example also showed that familiar misinformation can be amplified, not just obscure jokes.
A citation does not settle whether a generated claim is true. A linked page may be topically relevant yet fail to support the exact wording of the summary; a generated answer may omit a crucial qualification or reverse a source’s meaning. A 2026 study of AI Overviews found that 11% of the atomic claims it examined were unsupported by the cited pages, with omission the dominant failure mode. Its finding describes that study’s sample, not every Overview. Ofcom’s discussion of answer engines likewise examines how summaries can flatten satire and context.

What did Google change?
On May 30, 2024, Google said it had made targeted changes after investigating the viral results. It described adjustments intended to reduce Overviews for nonsensical queries, limit the influence of some user-generated material, and improve handling of health and news-related searches. It also said it removed particular false information, including the Obama claim. Google’s update explains its response; contemporary coverage also reported on the company’s announced fixes. The Associated Press covered the changes.
Those were mitigations, not proof that the general problem was solved. Google continued to develop AI Overviews as a live Search feature, with web links and its core ranking systems. Its product documentation describes safety systems and the role of links, but company descriptions of safeguards are not independent measurements of how reliably each answer is supported. What the 2026 evidence says—and does not say
The 2024 screenshots showed vivid failure modes, not their frequency. Viral posts naturally favor spectacular mistakes; they cannot tell readers how often ordinary searches receive an Overview or how often those summaries are wrong.

A 2026 study examining 55,393 trending queries found AI Overviews appeared for 13.7% of queries overall and for 64.7% of question-form queries in its March 13–April 21 sample. Those are study-specific activation rates, not a universal Google-wide rate. The same study examined source credibility, claim support and publisher exposure; its finding that cited-domain credibility and whether individual claims were supported were largely independent underscores why a respectable-looking source list is not enough. Another 2026 panel study of 900 U.S. adults found that users ended their browsing session on 26% of pages with an AI Overview, compared with 16% of pages without one. That measures behavior in that study, not a universal click-through rate or proof that every publisher loses traffic. Google, meanwhile, has argued that AI Search drives more queries and higher-quality clicks. The claims measure different populations and outcomes, so they should not be collapsed into a single verdict about web traffic. The underlying trade-off remains: a summary can save the effort of comparing several pages, especially for a complicated question, but it can also hide caveats, elevate one weak source, and discourage readers from opening the evidence. This matters to publishers whose work may be cited or summarized even when a user does not visit the page; the scale and consequences vary across sites and queries.

How to check a viral AI Overview
- Find the original screenshot. A repost may omit the query, date or surrounding interface.
- Read the exact query. Small wording changes can change what sources Search retrieves.
- Check the date and location. Features can vary by country, account, device and rollout stage, and a result may change over time.
- Open the cited links. Read the surrounding paragraphs, not just a snippet or headline.
- Check the source’s intent and quality. Look for satire, a forum joke, an outdated page, a genuine expert source or a page that does not support the claim.
- Corroborate high-stakes claims. For health, legal, financial or safety questions, consult a qualified source rather than relying on an Overview.
- Repeat cautiously if useful. A later result may differ because Google changed the system or because the original Overview appeared only for a particular query or context.
If a screenshot no longer reproduces, that alone does not prove it was fabricated: the system may have changed the result, the Overview may have appeared temporarily, or regional and personalization differences may matter. Conversely, one viral screenshot does not establish that the same failure is common today.
The real lesson of the glue-pizza meme
The incident was not just a collection of funny answers. It showed that information retrieval, understanding a source’s intent, checking a claim and expressing uncertainty are separate jobs. A system can retrieve real text and still misrepresent it. A link can point to a source without proving the answer. And a familiar search interface can make an unverified synthesis feel settled.
Use an AI Overview as a starting point for finding information, not as the final authority. When the answer matters, follow the links, inspect the context and verify the claim with a source appropriate to the stakes.
