Google made Gemini 3 the default model for AI Overviews globally on January 27, 2026. The update is meant to help Search handle complex questions and make it easier to turn a short AI-generated summary into a follow-up conversation in AI Mode. It does not guarantee that answers are correct, and the deeper Gemini 3 Pro experience has separate availability and usage limits.
What changed on January 27, 2026?
Google announced two related changes: Gemini 3 became the default model for AI Overviews, and users can continue from an Overview into an AI Mode conversation with the context carried forward. Google says the transition is available on mobile globally. The idea is to move from a quick summary to a deeper exchange without starting the search over. Google’s announcement describes the update.
This followed an earlier step: on November 18, 2025, Google brought Gemini 3 to Search through AI Mode and described routing difficult questions to more capable models. The January update extends Gemini 3’s role to AI Overviews; it is not the first appearance of Gemini 3 in Search. Google’s November Search announcement explains that earlier rollout.

AI Overviews and AI Mode are different experiences
An AI Overview is a generated snapshot that may appear near the top of results when Google’s systems judge that a synthesized response could help. It includes links for exploring the topic. AI Mode is the more conversational Search experience, intended for follow-up questions and deeper exploration. Google says AI Mode can divide a question into subtopics and search for them at the same time. Google’s AI Mode help page has details.

What Gemini 3 is intended to improve
Google says Gemini 3 brings stronger reasoning, improved understanding of intent and nuance, and better handling of complex questions. It also describes “query fan-out”: breaking a question into related searches and gathering information across them. Search may route harder questions to a more capable model while simpler ones use faster models. These are Google’s descriptions of the system and its intended benefits, not independent proof that every answer is more accurate.
“Default model” should not be read as a promise that every person, query, or Search surface always uses an identical Gemini 3 configuration. Google has described model routing, and the exact experience can depend on the query, product surface, capacity, and rollout.

How to try the follow-up flow
- Search Google with a question that could benefit from an explanation or synthesis.
- If an AI Overview appears, read it as a starting point and inspect its links.
- Use the follow-up or conversational control shown in the Overview to continue into AI Mode. The label and placement can vary by device, account, and interface version.
- Ask a focused next question, such as requesting a definition, a comparison, or clarification of one point, rather than repeating the whole query.
- Check the new response against its sources. For important claims, open authoritative sources directly.
The practical benefit is continuity: a follow-up can build on the search context instead of requiring you to restate it. The AI Mode response may be longer or different from the Overview and can have separate usage limits.
Availability and subscriptions
AI Overviews and AI Mode have separate availability rules. Google offers AI Overviews in many countries and languages, but the feature’s presence varies by location, language, account, device, rollout, and query. A query may simply not trigger an Overview. Ordinary AI Overviews are part of Search availability; the January announcement did not say that users need a paid plan to use them. Gemini 3 Pro in AI Mode is a distinct, more advanced option. Google’s help information says it is available in English in supported countries, has daily usage limits, and requires users to be at least 18 and signed in to a personal Google Account. Google AI subscribers may receive expanded access or higher limits, subject to regional and account conditions. Check the current AI Mode requirements and Google AI plan details for your location.
If you do not see an Overview or cannot access a particular AI Mode option, possible reasons include regional or language availability, a managed account, age or sign-in requirements, a daily limit, or a rollout that has not reached your account. No subscription is a remedy for every availability restriction.

Google warns that AI-generated responses can contain mistakes. A fluent summary can still misunderstand a question, rely on weak or conflicting web material, omit a caveat, or be out of date. Citations and links are useful places to investigate, but their presence does not make the generated wording authoritative.

- Open the cited pages and confirm that they support the specific claim.
- Refine the query with a relevant date, location, version, or source type.
- Ask a follow-up such as “Which source supports that?”—then check the source yourself.
- Use Google’s Web filter to see conventional text-based links. AI Overviews cannot be fully disabled as a core Search feature, but the Web filter provides a way to focus on standard links.
- Use the feedback controls when available to report a problematic response.
What the upgrade means in practice
Gemini 3 changes both the model Google says is the default for AI Overviews and the path from a short answer to a continuing Search conversation. That can make complex searches more convenient, especially when a first summary leads to a natural follow-up. The evidence supports describing this as a model and interaction upgrade—not a blanket accuracy guarantee or a reason to skip the linked sources.
