Google says it does not train its foundational Gemini models directly on your complete Gmail inbox. That does not mean Gmail is never processed by AI, or that no Gmail-derived information can be used to improve Google’s services. Gmail and Gemini can process messages to provide enabled features, and Google’s Connected Apps documentation says certain summaries, excerpts, and inferences from connected data may be used for service improvement—including generative-AI training—when Gemini Apps Activity is enabled.
What the Gmail training controversy was about
In November 2025, viral posts claimed Google had changed Gmail settings to let the company use users’ email to train AI. Google said the reports were misleading: Gmail’s Smart Features had existed for years, and it had not changed settings to opt users into training Gemini on their email. Coverage of Google’s response described the dispute as confusion over existing controls, not evidence of a verified universal settings change.
Google later stated that personal emails are not used to train its foundational AI models, including Gemini. Its Gmail privacy explanation is best understood narrowly: Google denies direct training on the complete inbox. It is not a claim that Gmail content is never processed, or that every kind of email-derived information is excluded from every form of AI improvement.

“Google reads your Gmail” can describe several distinct things. Gmail automatically processes messages for ordinary email functions such as spam filtering, categorization, and search. Smart Features can process content and activity to provide options such as Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and summary cards. Gemini may also use connected Gmail data to find or summarize information, draft a response, or answer a user’s question.

Those activities are different from using a large collection of raw messages to train a general-purpose model. A model can process an email to answer a prompt without being trained directly on the entire inbox. Google says it does not train foundational Gemini models directly on personal emails or use standard Workspace Gemini content to train underlying generative AI models. The latter commitment applies to Workspace services under separate Workspace privacy terms; it should not be conflated with the controls for a personal Google Account. The important exception: Connected Apps and Gemini activity
Gemini’s Connected Apps and Personal Intelligence features can use services such as Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Photos, YouTube, and Search to personalize responses, find and summarize information, offer recommendations, or help with tasks. Availability depends on account type, eligibility, rollout, and settings. Google’s Connected Apps guidance explains the connections and their uses.
The distinction that matters for privacy is between raw inbox data and derived material. Google says Gemini does not train generative AI models directly on a user’s entire Gmail inbox or Workspace library. But its Connected Apps privacy documentation says summaries, excerpts, generated media, and inferences from relevant connected content may be used to improve Google services, including training generative AI models, when Keep Activity is enabled. That is not the same as training on every email, but it makes “Google never uses Gmail-derived information to improve AI” too broad.

Google’s broader April 2026 explanation and this Connected Apps policy address different product boundaries. The former denies direct foundational-model training on personal emails; the latter describes possible use of derived information from connected apps under specific activity settings. Read together, they support a more precise answer than either “Google trains on everyone’s inbox” or “Gmail data can never contribute to AI improvement.”
Which settings can you turn off?
There is no single switch that disables every Gmail, Workspace, and Gemini pathway. For a personal account, review each relevant control. Labels and availability can differ by account, region, product rollout, and—in a work or school account—administrator policy.
Turn off Gmail, Chat, and Meet Smart Features
- On a computer, open Gmail and select Settings, then See all settings.
- In the General tab, scroll to Smart features.
- Turn off Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet, then save or confirm if prompted.
Google says this control affects features such as Smart Compose, Smart Reply, automatic categorization, and some summary cards. It applies across signed-in devices and apps, although a change made on a computer may not show immediately in the mobile app. Google’s Smart Features help page lists the controls and effects.
Review Workspace and other Google product controls
In Gmail on a computer, go to Settings → See all settings → General. Find Google Workspace smart features and select Manage Workspace smart feature settings. Review the separate options for Smart features in Google Workspace and Smart features in other Google products. The Gmail, Chat, and Meet switch does not automatically change these controls.

These settings govern different forms of personalization and integration, including use of Workspace content in other Google products. Turning them off may remove features you rely on; it does not stop ordinary Gmail processing needed to deliver and secure email.
Review Gemini connections and Keep Activity
In Gemini, open Settings or Connected Apps, review connected services, and disconnect Gmail or other apps you do not want Gemini to use for personalization. Review Gemini Apps Activity and Keep Activity separately: disconnecting an app and changing activity retention are distinct actions. Google says data changes in a connected app may take days to affect the Gemini experience, and disconnecting does not necessarily erase information already reflected in a response.

Disconnecting Gmail also does not prevent you from manually uploading email or screenshots to Gemini, using screen actions, or leaving other Google apps connected. If you do not want a conversation saved to Gemini Apps Activity, Google offers Temporary Chat; simply turning off Personal Intelligence for one chat is not necessarily equivalent to using Temporary Chat. Workspace accounts may have administrator-managed access to Gemini, retention settings, and experimental features. Google says standard Workspace Gemini content is not used to train underlying generative AI models and is covered by separate Workspace or Google Cloud data-protection commitments. Ask your organization’s administrator which features and policies apply; a personal account’s controls may not appear or work the same way.

What you give up—and what settings cannot promise
Turning off Smart Features can remove conveniences such as suggested replies, predictive writing, automatic categories, and summary cards. Turning off cross-product features or disconnecting apps can also limit Gemini’s ability to search or personalize answers using connected information. The trade-off is less data use for those particular features, not a Gmail account that performs no automated processing.
Email still has to be handled by a cloud provider for delivery, spam prevention, security, search, and ordinary service operation. If a message must not be processed by a cloud email provider at all, consumer Gmail is not a zero-processing service. That general limitation is separate from the claim that Google is training Gemini on every message.
Bottom line
The viral claim that Google secretly opted everyone into training Gemini on their entire Gmail inbox is unsupported and overbroad. Google says it does not directly train foundational Gemini models on complete personal inboxes. But Gmail content can be processed for enabled features, and connected-app-derived summaries, excerpts, and inferences may be used for service improvement and generative-AI training when applicable Gemini activity settings are on. If you want to minimize that use, review the Gmail, Workspace, other-product, Connected Apps, and Keep Activity controls separately.
