Google Play has no single screenshot canvas for every app. For a standard Store Listing upload, use a JPEG or 24-bit PNG without an alpha channel; the shortest side must be at least 320 pixels, the longest side no more than 3,840 pixels, and the longest side no more than twice the shortest. For recommendation-eligible phone assets, target 1,920 × 1,080 pixels in landscape (16:9) or 1,080 × 1,920 pixels in portrait (9:16). The official dimensions are normally written width × height, so this article labels orientation explicitly.

These requirements and recommendations come from Google Play Console Help. Google expresses most values as width × height. Thus, a portrait phone file is 1,080 pixels wide and 1,920 pixels high, while a landscape file is 1,920 pixels wide and 1,080 pixels high.
Standard listing acceptance rules
No universal phone size
Google Play does not require one named phone model or one universal phone resolution. A file is generally within the standard dimensional envelope when its shortest dimension is at least 320 px, its longest dimension is no more than 3,840 px, and the longest dimension is no greater than two times the shortest. For example, a 1,440 × 2,560 portrait image satisfies those dimensional limits and has a 9:16 ratio.
Use the permitted file formats
Upload JPEG or 24-bit PNG files without transparency (an alpha channel). A PNG that contains an alpha channel can fail validation even when its pixel dimensions are correct. The cited Google guidance does not state a universal file-size limit, so do not invent one; instead, use the format and compression settings that keep text and interface details legible while meeting Play Console’s current upload validation.

What the screenshot should show
Google says screenshots should convey the app’s capabilities, look and feel, and experience. Use the actual in-app or in-game interface. Recommendation guidance says not to rely on fingers, device mockups, or promotional claims as substitutes for the product view.
When 1,080 × 1,920 is the right target
For a portrait phone screenshot intended to be eligible for recommendation surfaces, create a 1,080-pixel-wide by 1,920-pixel-high image. For landscape, reverse those dimensions to 1,920 pixels wide by 1,080 pixels high. These are recommendation targets, not the minimum dimensions for every listing upload.
Listing publication versus recommendation guidance
A listing needs at least two screenshots across different device types to publish. Google’s recommendation guidance is stricter: provide at least four screenshots at 1,080-pixel-class resolution, using 1,920 × 1,080 landscape or 1,080 × 1,920 portrait. For games, the guidance calls for at least three screenshots in one of those orientations. Meeting a recommendation target does not guarantee featuring or additional installs; no conversion-rate lift is established by the cited documentation.
Tablet and Chromebook screenshots
For tablets and Chromebooks, Google specifies uploads between 1,080 and 7,680 pixels along the relevant dimensions. Compose them in 16:9 landscape or 9:16 portrait. You may upload up to eight screenshots for each supported device type, and Google recommends at least four for large-screen experiences. These assets should show layouts that genuinely use the larger display rather than simply enlarging a phone screen.

Wear OS, Automotive, XR and TV requirements
Wear OS watches and watch faces
Use square screenshots of at least 384 × 384 pixels. Show only the interface, without a watch frame or extra decorative background. At least one current interface screenshot is required for the Wear OS guidance.
Android Automotive OS
If you provide Automotive screenshots, supply at least two portrait images at 800 × 1,280 pixels and at least two landscape images at 1,024 × 768 pixels. Capture from the generic system image, not from a particular vehicle model, so the asset represents the supported Automotive experience rather than one manufacturer’s dashboard.
Android XR
Use an 8:5 canvas. The minimum is 1,920 × 1,200 pixels and the recommended resolution is 3,840 × 2,400 pixels. Upload four to eight PNG or JPEG screenshots.

A TV-enabled app needs at least one TV screenshot. It also needs a separate 1,280 × 720 feature banner. The banner is not counted as a screenshot and follows the same JPEG or 24-bit PNG, no-alpha rule.
How to make correctly sized Play screenshots
- Choose the device class first. Decide whether the asset is for a phone, tablet or Chromebook, Wear OS, Automotive, XR or TV. Do not resize one portrait phone image and assume it represents every class.
- Choose orientation and target pixels. For recommendation-ready phones, use 1,080 × 1,920 portrait or 1,920 × 1,080 landscape. For other classes, use the dimensions in the table above and keep the required ratio.
- Capture the real interface. Run the app in the matching emulator or hardware configuration and capture screens that demonstrate the app. Keep system chrome, fingers, device frames and promotional overlays out of the final image when Google’s guidance excludes them.
- Set the export canvas explicitly. In your image editor, check width and height in pixels, not Android dp or CSS pixels. Confirm that portrait files have the greater height and landscape files the greater width.
- Remove transparency. Flatten the image onto an opaque background and export as JPEG or 24-bit PNG. Inspect the exported file, because an editor can preserve an alpha channel even when the canvas looks solid.
- Check ratio and limits. Verify the shortest side is at least 320 px, the longest no more than 3,840 px, and the longest no more than twice the shortest for a standard listing. Then check the stricter device-specific range if you are preparing tablets, XR or another class.
- Upload in Play Console. Add each image to the matching device-type section, review the validation messages, and replace any asset that is assigned to the wrong orientation or device category.
Common size and upload problems
“The image is too small”
Check both dimensions, not just the width. A 320-pixel shortest side is the general floor, while recommendation-ready phone assets should be 1,080 × 1,920 or 1,920 × 1,080.

“The aspect ratio is invalid”
Calculate longest side ÷ shortest side. For standard listing assets the result cannot exceed 2. For recommendation-ready phone composition, use exactly 16:9 landscape or 9:16 portrait.
PNG transparency is rejected
Export a 24-bit PNG with no alpha channel, or use JPEG. Flattening a transparent layer against white or another deliberate background removes the unsupported channel.

Prepare a large-screen layout and assign it to the tablet or Chromebook section. Google allows up to eight files per supported type and recommends at least four for large-screen experiences; a stretched phone capture does not demonstrate that experience.
Automotive assets fail review
Use the exact 800 × 1,280 portrait and 1,024 × 768 landscape dimensions, provide two of each orientation when supplying Automotive screenshots, and capture from the generic system image rather than a branded vehicle interface.

A TV asset is confused with a screenshot
Upload at least one TV screenshot and separately provide the 1,280 × 720 TV banner. They are different assets with different purposes.
