Google has retired the Play Store’s built-in peer-to-peer “Share apps” feature. The company announced the change in the Play Store v44.1 release notes on December 16, 2024, and the option was later observed missing from Play Store version 45.2.19-31. The change removes the Play Store’s managed phone-to-phone app-package transfer, not every way to share an app, link or file on Android.
What changed in Google Play
The former workflow was located at Play Store → profile picture → Manage apps & device → Share apps. It provided Send and Receive controls so two nearby Android devices could transfer installed application packages locally.
Google’s release note says the consumer feature would be retired, but does not give a reason. The announcement is documented in the Play Store v44.1 release notes. A March 9, 2025 report from 9to5Google found the option removed in Play Store build 45.2.19-31 and identified Files by Google as a similar alternative.

Retirement timeline
- Early 2021: Google introduced nearby app sharing in the Play Store, according to 9to5Google.
- December 16, 2024: Google’s v44.1 release notes announced that Share apps would be retired.
- December 2024 to January 2025: Users reported an in-app notice saying the feature would no longer be available after January.
- March 9, 2025: 9to5Google reported the option missing from Play Store version 45.2.19-31.
The disappearance may not occur at the same moment on every phone. Play Store build, Android version, manufacturer software, Google Play services, account configuration and staged feature controls can affect which menus appear. A missing entry is therefore not necessarily a damaged Play Store installation.
What the old feature did—and did not do
Share apps transferred an installed application package over a nearby-device connection instead of making the recipient download it from Google Play. That made it useful where mobile data was expensive, slow or unavailable, and when setting up a nearby phone.
It was not a backup or ownership-transfer system. It did not reliably move accounts, login sessions, databases, saved games, local files, secure tokens, notification settings, permissions or DRM licences. It also did not give a different Google account entitlement to a paid purchase.

How to share a free app now
- Open the app’s page in Google Play.
- Tap Share, or use the three-dot menu if that is how the current Play Store build exposes the command.
- Choose Messages, email, Quick Share or another sharing app.
- Have the recipient open the link in Google Play and install the app.
This sends a listing, not the installed package. Google Play will apply the recipient’s country, age, account, device, Android-version and hardware rules. A recipient may therefore see an incompatibility message, a regional restriction or a purchase prompt.

Where Quick Share fits
Quick Share is a transport method, not a replacement for the Play Store’s former Send/Receive workflow. It can send a Play Store link or an APK that the sender has separately obtained. Google’s release notes mention Nearby Share appearing prominently as a sharing option; that does not mean the old Play Store installation flow was preserved.
Nearby discovery can fail if Bluetooth, Wi-Fi scanning, visibility or permissions are disabled. Even when a file arrives, Quick Share does not bypass Play compatibility checks, provide a paid-app entitlement or ensure that an APK contains every component needed by the device.
APK transfers and Files by Google
Files by Google has historically included application-file sharing, and 9to5Google highlighted it as a similar alternative after the Play Store feature’s retirement. Menu names and availability vary by Files by Google version and device, so there is no universal path to promise.

- Modern Play apps may use split APKs or app bundles, so one extracted APK may be incomplete.
- The package can target a different processor architecture or Android version.
- An installed version signed with another key can reject an update or fail to install over the existing app.
- The receiving device may need to allow installation from the specific file manager or source app.
- Play Protect can warn about or block suspicious packages.
- Outdated, altered or damaged files can fail or create security risks.
- Developer licences and Google Play terms may restrict redistribution.
Do not use cracked applications, modified Play Store clients or random “Share apps APK” utilities as routine fixes.
Sharing paid apps with Family Library
Family Library is the official account-based route for sharing eligible Google Play purchases with household members. Google describes the service and its requirements at Google Play Family Library. Google also explains that Play content generally cannot simply be transferred between unrelated accounts at its account-transfer guidance.
Both people must satisfy the family-group and country requirements, and the particular purchase must be eligible. Subscriptions and other digital content are not automatically covered. Family Library grants an account-based installation entitlement; it does not copy local app data or let someone outside the family group install a paid app for free.

For a phone upgrade, sign in to the same Google account during Android setup and use the offered restore or app-reinstall process. Where supported, Android’s device-transfer flow can copy additional content. Play Store device-management or sync controls may differ by manufacturer and software version.

Reinstalling an app is separate from restoring its data. Use the app’s own cloud-sync system or Android backup when you need accounts, game progress, settings or databases; sending an APK does not normally provide those items.
Developer and tester options
Play Console Internal app sharing
Developers can upload an APK or Android App Bundle in Play Console Internal app sharing and give testers a generated link. Google’s documentation says each link can expire after 60 days and can be downloaded by a maximum of 100 users: Internal app sharing. This is controlled testing infrastructure, not a consumer replacement for sharing an installed app with friends.
Android limited distribution
As of August 2026, Android documents free limited-distribution accounts that can share an app with up to 20 explicitly authorised devices through a QR-code or link handshake: Android limited distribution. It is intended for developer distribution and small authorised groups, not ordinary Play Store users.

The Share apps menu is missing
That usually indicates the retirement reaching the installed Play Store build rather than a corrupted app. Check the Play Store version to understand the device’s state, but do not expect clearing storage or updating to restore a feature Google has retired. Installing an old Play Store package can be unsafe, unsupported and ineffective if backend controls or compatible Play services are required.

A shared Play link will not install
- The app may be unavailable in the recipient’s country.
- The phone may not meet Android, hardware or architecture requirements.
- Age, account or managed-device restrictions may apply.
- The app may be paid and the account lacks an entitlement.
- The developer may have unpublished or delisted it.
- The link may be opening outside the Play Store.
The nearby device cannot be found
For Quick Share, check that both phones have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled, the receiving phone is visible, and required nearby-device permissions are granted. This affects link or file transport only; it will not restore Play Store’s retired Send/Receive process.
An APK is blocked or will not install
Check whether the file is a complete split-package set, matches the phone’s architecture and Android version, has enough storage, and is signed consistently with any installed version. The source app may need permission to install unknown apps, and Play Protect may block the package. Do not disable security controls merely to force an untrusted file to install.
The app opens without the expected data
An application package is not an app-data backup. Restore through the app’s cloud account or Android backup system instead.
Bottom line
Google’s Play Store peer-to-peer “Share apps” menu is retired and has been removed from affected Play Store rollouts. For most users, sharing the current Google Play listing is the safest replacement; Family Library handles eligible household purchases. Quick Share can carry a link or file, while APK transfer remains a qualified offline fallback with real compatibility, security and licensing risks.
