Google Play Music is no longer available as a standalone service. Reinstalling its old app or trying to repair its website will not bring it back. Google’s successor is YouTube Music, so the right next step depends on whether you’re looking for an old library, a missing purchase, offline music, or help with playback on the replacement service.
Start by signing in to YouTube Music with the Google Account you used before, then check your library. If something is missing, look for it in the right category and check any original files or backups you still have. If YouTube Music itself is failing, use the targeted fixes below.
Is Google Play Music still available?
No. Google’s current Google Play Music page says the service is no longer available and points users to YouTube Music. The old app, website, Music Manager, and store are not current services to troubleshoot. An old app icon or cached screen on a device does not mean the service still works.

Google announced a library-transfer path on May 12, 2020. The announced categories included uploaded and purchased music, songs and albums added to a library, playlists, likes and dislikes, curated stations, and listening preferences. That is useful context, but it is not a guarantee that every historical item can still be recovered or played today. Google’s migration announcement

What replaced Google Play Music?
YouTube Music is Google’s successor for music streaming and personal libraries. It supports streaming, playlists, and user uploads; content from the old library may appear if it transferred or remains available. Google describes YouTube Music Premium as adding benefits such as ad-free music, background playback, and downloads. Availability and features can vary by country, account, platform, and device.
Keep four kinds of music separate when troubleshooting:
- Streaming-catalog tracks: Access depends on YouTube Music’s current catalog and regional availability. Having streamed a song through an old subscription did not necessarily mean you owned it.
- Uploaded music: Audio files you provided may appear under Uploads, rather than alongside catalog tracks.
- Purchases: Check YouTube Music and your Google Account records, but don’t assume every old purchase will be available as a downloadable file in its original form.
- Local files: Files stored only on an old phone or computer must be recovered from that device or a backup; a streaming library is not a substitute for a file backup.
First steps when your old library is missing
- Open music.youtube.com or the current YouTube Music app.
- Sign out and try each Google Account you may have used with Google Play Music. An empty library often means you are in the wrong account.
- Open Library and check Songs, Albums, Artists, Playlists, Uploads, and any Purchases section shown for your account.
- Search for a distinctive artist, album, track, or uploaded filename. Check the desktop website if the mobile app seems incomplete.
- For an upload or purchase that is still missing, look for original files on old computers, phones, external drives, and cloud backups. Google Takeout may help with available account data, but it is not a guarantee that every purchase or library item can be restored.
Some features may be unavailable to supervised or restricted accounts. If the library is still empty after checking accounts and categories, treat that as a missing-content issue—not an app playback problem.

Why are songs or playlists missing?
- Wrong account: Verify the profile shown in YouTube Music and try other accounts you used in the past.
- Subscription access mistaken for ownership: A track available through an old subscription was not necessarily a purchase or an uploaded file.
- Different library category: A personal upload may be under Uploads, not Songs; purchases or playlists may have their own sections.
- Unavailable recording: A transferred playlist can still point to a recording that was removed, replaced, region-restricted, or uploaded by another user and later deleted. A playlist entry does not guarantee that its recording remains playable.
- Incomplete or changed transfer: Google described the content categories intended for migration in 2020, but that historical announcement does not promise present-day recovery of every item.
- Restricted account or stale session: Check account restrictions, then sign out and back in or compare with the desktop site.
Fix YouTube Music playback problems
First test another song. If one track fails but others play, the issue may be that specific recording or its regional availability, not your connection. If nothing plays, work through these steps in order:
- Close and reopen YouTube Music, then restart your phone, tablet, computer, speaker, or TV.
- Check Wi-Fi or mobile data. Google recommends at least 3 Mbps Wi-Fi for general playback troubleshooting; this is guidance, not a guarantee of smooth playback in every situation. If Wi-Fi works but mobile data does not, check YouTube Music’s mobile-data permission, your carrier connection, and any data limits.
- Update YouTube Music and your device’s operating system.
- On Android, clear YouTube Music’s app cache. If that fails, reinstall the app from the official app store.
- Try the same account at music.youtube.com to help distinguish an app problem from an account or content problem.
- If playback stops with “Playback paused because this account is being used in another location,” stop music on the other device or browser tab and restart playback. If you do not recognize the other use, review account security and change your password if unauthorized access is suspected.

Offline downloads are missing or will not work
YouTube Music downloads are offline access inside the app, not unrestricted MP3 files. Google Play Music downloads tied to the old service are not a dependable way to recover a library. For YouTube Music downloads, confirm that you are signed in to the account with an active YouTube Music Premium membership, reconnect to the internet, and check that the device has enough storage. Google says downloaded music must reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to remain available.

- Open your profile and confirm the active account and membership.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi or mobile data, then check device storage.
- Open Profile picture → Settings → Downloads & storage. Review download quality and connection settings.
- Delete a failed download and download it again. If downloads remain stuck, update or reinstall the app.
Google’s download guidance says Smart Downloads can automatically download up to 200 recently played songs on supported setups. Your storage and settings affect how much can be kept. Keep a separate local backup of audio files you own; app downloads are not that backup.

Bluetooth headphones or speakers
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled, then disconnect and re-pair the accessory.
- Test the headphones or speaker in another app, and test YouTube Music through the phone’s own speaker.
- Update the phone’s operating system and the accessory’s manufacturer app or firmware.
- Clear YouTube Music’s Android cache; reinstall the app if necessary.
If other apps also fail through Bluetooth, focus on the accessory or phone rather than the music service.
Chromecast or Google Cast
- Restart the router and the Chromecast or other Cast device.
- Confirm the phone and Cast device are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Try casting from another phone or tablet, then update YouTube Music and the Cast device firmware.
- If the connection still fails, forget and reconnect to Wi-Fi. Google also suggests temporarily turning automatic time-zone settings off and on as a troubleshooting step.
- Reinstall YouTube Music if the other steps do not help.

Google Home plays the wrong song or does not respond
Check that the microphone is not muted, YouTube Music is selected as the default music provider, and Google Home is linked to the intended Google Account. Make sure the Home device and phone or Cast device use the expected Wi-Fi network. A specific request, such as “Play [song] by [artist],” can help avoid ambiguity. Restart Google Home and YouTube Music; if the wrong track keeps playing, send feedback through the app.

- Confirm the app is signed in to the Google Account that owns the membership.
- Check whether the membership is active and whether a recent payment failed.
- Sign out and back in, update the app, and test in a private browser window.
- If the membership is active but the benefits are still missing, contact YouTube Support.
Google’s membership information explains the relationship between YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium. YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium benefits; it may suit people who also value YouTube’s broader benefits. Check the official membership page for current eligibility and checkout terms—prices and plan availability vary and old prices should not be relied on.

What if a Google Play Music purchase cannot be recovered?
Start with the Google Account that made the purchase. Check YouTube Music, account purchase records, and any Google Takeout data available to you. Then search your old devices and backups for the original audio files. The 2020 announcement included purchases among the content categories intended for migration, but it does not guarantee that each purchase can now be recovered or downloaded in its original form.
Do not confuse a purchased track with a song that was available only through subscription streaming. If a genuine purchase is missing after checking the correct account, use Google’s official account, payments, or support channels. Avoid third-party “recovery” services that ask for account credentials or claim they can restore Google Play Music libraries.
Can you still upload your own music?
Yes. YouTube Music Help includes an upload workflow, and Google’s 2020 announcement described a limit of up to 100,000 personal tracks. Because upload controls and limits can change, consult the current YouTube Music Help Center for the available steps.

- Find your original audio files and make a separate local backup.
- Use YouTube Music’s upload feature in a desktop browser.
- Wait for processing, then check the Uploads section.
- Test playback on the web and mobile app. Do not rely on the cloud upload as your only copy.
App missing from a phone or TV?
Install YouTube Music only from the device’s official app store, and update the operating system and Google Play services where applicable. Avoid unofficial Google Play Music APKs: reinstalling the discontinued service will not restore it, and unofficial installers can put your device and account at risk.
Do not assume there is a standalone YouTube Music app for every television. Google’s supported-device guidance says YouTube Music is not available as a living-room app; on supported TVs and streaming devices, use the YouTube app instead.
Which option makes sense now?

A paid music plan is relevant if you need Premium features—not as a fix for the discontinued Google Play Music app, a wrong account, a lost local file, or a broken Cast connection.
