Google’s published Places reference limit is 6,000 queries per minute (QPM), but that is not a guarantee that every project or Places API method can make 6,000 requests per minute. For Places API (New), the rate limit is enforced per API method per project, and the quota configured for your project in Google Cloud Console is the practical authority. To recover safely, identify the exhausted method, reduce unnecessary calls and fields, pace retries, and set usage guardrails before asking Google for more quota.
What is the Google Places API limit?
Google’s current Google Maps Platform FAQ lists Places at 6,000 queries per minute. Google also says Maps Platform products have no maximum daily request limit by default; projects can set daily limits to control spend. These are reference-level facts, not a promise that a particular project, API edition, or method has those exact limits available.
For an application, check the configured quota in Google Cloud Console: Google Maps Platform > Quotas and Metrics. Quotas are configurable, and the value shown for the API and method in your project determines the limit you need to plan around. A method-specific limit may be exhausted even if another Places method still has capacity.
Places API (New) and Legacy Places do not pool quota the same way
For Places API (New), Google states that the per-minute rate limit is applied per API method per project. Treat each method’s available quota separately rather than assuming one project-wide pool.

Legacy Places API calculates its per-minute rate as the sum of client-side and server-side requests made by all applications using the same project credentials. A mobile app and a backend can therefore contribute to the same Legacy total. Confirm which edition your code uses before comparing its traffic with a quota chart.
How to find which quota you have hit
- Open Google Cloud Console and go to Google Maps Platform > Quotas and Metrics.
- Select the relevant Places API and inspect quota usage alongside request counts, errors, latency, and QPM consumption. For Places API (New), identify the specific API method with elevated usage.
- Compare the time of the application error with the quota graph. Check whether traffic came from browser clients, backend services, scheduled jobs, or retries. For Legacy, include both client-side and server-side traffic using the same project credentials.
- Review Google Maps Platform usage, quota, metrics, and billing reports together. A quota issue and a cost spike are related operational risks, but one chart alone may not explain both.
Successful requests and server errors consume quota; authentication errors and other client errors do not. That distinction helps explain why a broken integration may still use capacity if it reaches the service and fails on the server, while a request rejected for a client-side or authentication problem is treated differently.
Interpreting OVER_QUERY_LIMIT and rateLimitExceeded
These error labels should prompt investigation of quota and request rate, not an immediate assumption that your whole project is out of capacity. Check the affected API edition and method, the time window, and the corresponding Cloud Console quota metric. Also verify that requests are authenticated and formed correctly; a client error can have a different cause and quota impact from a server-side failure.

How to reduce Places API requests and billing
Use a FieldMask that matches the screen
For Place Details (New), Nearby Search (New), and Text Search (New), send a FieldMask containing only the fields the user interface needs. Google bills a request at the highest SKU represented by its selected fields. Combining Essentials and Pro fields means the request is billed at Pro, so an unnecessary field can affect cost even when the rest of the response needs only lower-tier data.
A narrow mask also reduces response processing and can reduce latency. Review field masks when a screen changes: it is easy for a previously useful field to remain in a request after the UI no longer displays it.
Use Autocomplete session tokens correctly
Use one unique session token for the Autocomplete requests associated with a user’s place-selection interaction and the subsequent Place Details (New) or Address Validation request. Once the user selects a place, start a new token for the next session. If a session is abandoned, Google charges the Autocomplete requests as if no token had been supplied.

Debounce input and prevent duplicate work
For autocomplete, do not dispatch a request for every keystroke as quickly as it arrives. Debounce input so a brief burst of typing results in fewer requests, and avoid firing the same search from multiple UI events. On the server, inspect fan-out paths, retries, and scheduled tasks for duplicate calls. Cache stable place IDs or responses only where Google’s policies permit it.

Pace bursts and retry selectively
Use a queue or other traffic-shaping mechanism to avoid sending a sudden burst faster than the method’s configured quota. For retryable rate responses, use exponential backoff with jitter: increase the delay after successive failures and randomize it so many clients do not retry together. Do not retry every error indiscriminately. Google’s cited guidance does not specify one universal retry interval, so select and validate a policy against your application’s latency needs and observed quota behavior.
How to set a quota guardrail or request more quota
Google allows quota controls per day, per minute, and per user per minute. Use limits that fit the expected workload and your budget, and monitor them alongside request errors and cost. A per-user limit can help prevent one client from consuming disproportionate capacity; a daily cap can constrain spend exposure. A cap may also cause legitimate requests to fail after it is reached, so alerting and a recovery plan matter.

Request an increase in Cloud Console
- In Cloud Console, select the relevant Google Maps Platform API and open its quota settings.
- Choose the quota you need to change and edit its value.
- Submit the quota increase request and monitor its status in the console.
Request an increase only after confirming which method or limit is constraining the application and checking for avoidable traffic. Google warns that a higher quota can increase your bill and points customers to its pricing calculator. More quota provides headroom; it does not make unnecessary calls or high-cost field selections cheaper.

As of March 1, 2025, Google replaced the former monthly $200 credit model with SKU-level free usage caps, expanded volume discounts, and changed some SKU names and legacy designations. Free usage caps reset on the first day of each month at midnight Pacific time. Do not estimate current costs using the old blanket-credit model; use the pricing and SKU information that applies to your project and current usage.

Google’s current subscription pricing page lists these monthly combined-call allowances and plan prices:

| Subscription | Combined calls per month | Monthly price |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | 50,000 | $100 |
| Essentials | 100,000 | $275 |
| Pro | 250,000 | $1,200 |
Calls above a subscription’s plan limit incur additional charges. The listed combined-call figures are subscription allowances, not the per-minute quota for an individual Places API method. Compare a plan’s allowance with your forecast usage, the relevant SKU mix, and the possibility of overages before choosing it.
Monitor for both reliability and cost
- Track by method and edition: use method-level metrics for Places API (New), and account for aggregated client and server activity when investigating Legacy Places.
- Alert before exhaustion: watch QPM consumption and error rates so a burst can be addressed before users see sustained failures.
- Watch billing separately: monitor current and forecast cost, not just request counts. Field selection changes the highest SKU billed for a request.
- Keep a rollback path: if a release increases traffic or errors, be ready to disable duplicate call paths, narrow fields, or reduce nonessential request volume.
- Reassess after quota changes: a higher ceiling can let more traffic through, so retain budget monitoring and daily limits where appropriate.

Does 6,000 QPM mean I can make 6,000 requests every minute from each server?
No. It is Google’s published Places reference figure, not an individual-server allowance. Your project’s configured quota and, for Places API (New), the quota for the particular method govern.
Will increasing a quota automatically lower my Places API bill?
No. A quota increase permits more requests; it does not lower the price per request. Field masks, SKU selection, subscription terms, free usage caps, and any over-limit charges affect costs.
