Android users first got access on June 24, 2024; the app remains available, with Google Play listing an update dated July 29, 2026. It is aimed at video production, not at replacing Pixel Camera’s computational photography.
What Blackmagic Camera does
Blackmagic Camera brings controls familiar from dedicated video cameras to a phone. Instead of leaving every decision to automatic processing, you can set or monitor exposure, focus, color, framing, and sound while recording. Blackmagic Design makes cinema cameras and DaVinci Resolve, and the app can connect phone footage to its editing and collaboration workflow.
“Pro-grade” is best understood as a description of the controls and workflow, not a promise that a phone will produce cinema-camera image quality. Your Pixel’s sensor, lenses, lighting, stabilization, audio setup, and recording options still determine what the footage can do.
Which Pixel phones can use it?
Blackmagic describes the Android app as available for supported Samsung and Google Pixel phones, but its public materials do not provide a definitive model-by-model Pixel compatibility table. Google Play also warns that features vary by device. Check the listing on the specific phone before relying on it: an app that installs may still lack a particular lens, frame rate, recording format, or monitoring option.

How to install and test it
- Open the Google Play listing for Blackmagic Camera.
- Confirm the developer is Blackmagic Design Inc. and that Google Play marks the app compatible with your Pixel.
- Tap Install, then grant camera, microphone, and file or media permissions when requested.
- Open the app and check which lenses, resolutions, frame rates, and controls are available on your phone.
- Record a short test clip. Confirm it plays back and appears in the app’s Media tab and phone storage before using the app for important footage.
If the listing says the app is incompatible or does not appear, update Android and Google Play system components, reopen Play Store, and check again. Availability can depend on the model, Android or camera support, region, and Play Store account or device profile. Avoid third-party APK downloads. If your phone appears supported but recording fails, contact Blackmagic support.
Controls that matter when filming
Exposure and motion
You can adjust frame rate, shutter, and ISO. Frame rate affects how motion is captured and played back; shutter affects both exposure and motion blur; ISO controls sensor sensitivity and can affect image noise. Blackmagic says its frame-rate presets range from 24 fps to as high as 120 fps depending on the device. The available choices on a particular Pixel may be narrower.
For repeatable shots, manual exposure can help prevent brightness from changing unexpectedly between takes. The app also provides a histogram, zebra warnings for bright areas, and false color to help judge exposure. These displays assist decision-making; they do not improve the phone’s sensor or recover detail that was never captured.

Focus, color, and framing
Blackmagic lists tap-to-focus, focus lock, focus assist or peaking, and rack-focus presets. White balance and tint controls can help keep color consistent across shots. Frame guides include common cinema and social formats such as 16:9, 9:16, and 1:1. A guide is an overlay for composition, not a guarantee that every recording mode produces every listed aspect ratio.
The interface can display lens, frame rate, shutter, timecode, ISO, white balance, tint, histogram, audio levels, resolution, and storage status. Blackmagic says the on-screen HUD can be shown or hidden with a vertical swipe. It also describes logarithmic capture and 3D LUT monitoring for compatible phones; check your Pixel’s available options rather than assuming these work on every Android device.
Resolution, audio, and streaming
Blackmagic’s general feature description includes 720p, 1080p, 4K, Open Gate, and up to 8K, along with H.264 and H.265 recording. Those platform-wide descriptions are not a promise that a Pixel supports every resolution, codec, or format. Other professional codecs may be restricted to Apple devices or specific hardware.

The app includes audio meters and can work with external microphones when the phone and accessory setup support them. Meters show levels; they cannot eliminate wind, poor microphone placement, Bluetooth latency, or limitations in an adapter or interface. Test the complete audio chain, including monitoring, before a shoot.
Blackmagic also describes direct streaming to YouTube, Facebook, and Twitch using stream-key configuration. Practical availability depends on the phone, account, network, and platform requirements.
Recording locally or using Blackmagic Cloud
Blackmagic Cloud is optional. Basic recording can stay on the phone; collaboration features are for people who want clips or proxies to reach a shared DaVinci Resolve project.

- Record locally: Capture and keep clips on the phone. This is the simplest choice and does not require a cloud workflow.
- Record, then upload selected clips: Choose what to send later, which can suit limited mobile data or a selective editing workflow.
- Sync to a Resolve project: Use Blackmagic Cloud to sync media, upload proxies while recording, and collaborate through a project workspace. This requires a Blackmagic ID, network access, and enough cloud storage for the workflow.
Blackmagic says a Blackmagic ID can be created without charge, but storage and production services may have separate conditions. Check the current Blackmagic Cloud service details before planning a project around cloud capacity. Uploading high-resolution footage can use substantial bandwidth; a weak connection can interrupt transfers.
Blackmagic Camera or Pixel Camera?

Use the native Pixel Camera when speed and Google’s automatic processing are the priority. Blackmagic Camera is more useful when you want to control a video shot deliberately. They serve different jobs rather than one being a universal replacement for the other.

Consider it for
- YouTube, short-form, interview, event, documentary, or news-style video where consistent exposure and framing matter.
- A Pixel used as a B-camera alongside other video equipment.
- Visible focus and exposure aids, audio meters, or repeatable camera presets.
- A production already using DaVinci Resolve or Blackmagic Cloud.
Use another approach for
- Casual still photos or fast point-and-shoot capture.
- Google-specific computational features such as Night Sight or Add Me.
- A Pixel that Play Store marks incompatible, or a shoot that depends on a control your device does not expose.
- Long, irreplaceable recordings without a tested backup plan.
The app cannot upgrade the phone’s lens, sensor, autofocus, or stabilization hardware. A flatter or more controllable image may be useful for later grading, but it does not automatically create a “Hollywood look.” Lighting, exposure, movement, sound, and editing still matter.

Recording reliability and practical safeguards
Recent Google Play reviews include reports of missing clips and long recordings stopping unexpectedly. A developer response said version 3.4.1 was intended to fix a recording-loss issue reported by a Samsung user; that response is not proof that every device or issue is resolved. Update to the latest version available for your phone, then test your own recording and playback path.
- Keep free storage available and check storage status before recording.
- For long takes, monitor battery and phone temperature; high-resolution video can consume storage quickly and sustained recording can stress a phone.
- If recording to external storage, confirm that the drive is mounted, has space, and remains powered.
- For important work, verify clips after recording and keep another copy where practical rather than relying on one phone.
- Choose in advance whether to keep footage local, upload selected clips, or sync proxies. Prefer Wi-Fi for large transfers when appropriate.
Other options for Pixel owners
For manual video capture, Blackmagic Camera’s defining advantage is its production-oriented monitoring and potential Resolve workflow. For still photography, alternatives solve different problems: ProShot offers manual photo and video controls, while Zerocam is aimed more at a simpler, lower-processing photography experience. Lightroom Mobile and Google Photos are editing destinations, not direct substitutes for a manual capture app. The native Pixel Camera remains the most direct option for Google’s own computational camera features.
