The March 2024 leak was right about three conventional Pixel 9 phones: Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. But Google’s full Pixel 9 family ultimately had four models, because it also included the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The most important change was a smaller Pro phone, giving buyers a premium option without requiring them to choose the largest handset.

What the original three-model leak said

In March 2024, reporting based on renders attributed to OnLeaks pointed to three non-folding phones: Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. The renders suggested a redesigned camera bar and three size tiers. At that point, these were leak-era names and dimensions, not Google-confirmed specifications. Ars Technica’s March report covered the expected lineup.

Why a smaller Pro mattered

Earlier Pixel flagships had often made size a major distinction between the standard and Pro choices. The leak suggested a different arrangement: a standard phone, a compact Pro and a larger Pro XL. That would let buyers choose Pro-level features without automatically moving to the biggest phone. The returning XL label also recalled Google’s older XL-branded phones. Comparing the layout to Apple’s standard, smaller premium and larger premium tiers is an interpretation of the lineup, not a strategy Google said it was copying.

What the leaked sizes got wrong

Early reports put the Pixel 9 at about 6.1 inches, the Pixel 9 Pro at about 6.3 inches and the Pixel 9 Pro XL at about 6.5 inches. Those were estimates from pre-launch reporting. Google’s final specifications instead gave both the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro 6.3-inch displays, while the Pro XL has a 6.8-inch display. The difference is a useful reminder that renders and early measurements can indicate product tiers without settling final specifications. Google’s Pixel 9 specifications and Pixel 9 Pro specifications document the released sizes.

How the Fold changed the count

By July, leak coverage had expanded beyond the three slab phones. Regulatory and teardown-related reporting pointed to four devices, including a foldable successor that was widely called the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. That evidence went beyond product renders, although the leak itself was not official confirmation. See 9to5Google’s regulatory-leak report and Android Authority’s report on the Fold.

The distinction is straightforward: “three models” described the conventional slab-phone lineup in the first major leak; “four models” describes the full Pixel 9 family Google eventually launched. The Fold is a different form factor, not simply a fourth screen-size option in the slab range. Its large inner screen, different camera and battery configuration, and foldable-specific software considerations make it a separate buying decision.

What leaked specifications suggested—and what Google confirmed

Promotional-material leaks later suggested Tensor G4 across the range, 12GB of RAM for the base Pixel 9 and 16GB for the Pro phones, alongside broad camera configurations. Those reports were not equally definitive for every detail. The table separates selected leaked claims from the released specifications, rather than treating early material as final.

Phone Pre-launch leak claim Confirmed released specification
Pixel 9 About 6.3-inch display; 12GB RAM; 50MP wide and 48MP ultrawide cameras; Tensor G4 reported 6.3-inch Actua OLED, 60–120Hz; Tensor G4; 12GB RAM; 4,700mAh typical battery; 50MP wide and 48MP ultrawide cameras; up to 2,700 nits peak brightness

Pixel 9 Pro XL About 6.8-inch display; 16GB RAM; Pro triple-camera setup; Tensor G4 reported 6.8-inch LTPO Super Actua OLED, 1–120Hz; Tensor G4; 16GB RAM; 5,060mAh typical battery; Pro camera system; up to 3,000 nits peak brightness
Pixel 9 Pro Fold 8-inch inner display reported; 16GB RAM; fold-specific cameras; Tensor G4 reported Foldable with an 8-inch inner display and 6.3-inch cover display; Tensor G4; 16GB RAM; fold-specific camera and battery configuration

The leak claims are drawn from Android Authority’s promotional-material leak report. Confirmed slab-phone specifications are from Google’s Pixel 9 specs and Google’s Pixel 9 Pro specs; Fold details are in Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold announcement. Google’s U.S. starting prices at launch were $799 for Pixel 9, $999 for Pixel 9 Pro, $1,099 for Pixel 9 Pro XL and $1,799 for Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Prices vary by region, storage, retailer and promotion; launch pricing is not a statement of current sale price.

Google’s final lineup and what separates the phones

Google announced the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL alongside the Pixel 9 Pro Fold on August 13, 2024. The conventional phones all use Tensor G4, but the lineup is not just a size ladder: the standard Pixel 9 has a dual-camera system, while the Pro phones add a telephoto camera and a more capable display. Google described the Pro and Pro XL as two sizes of its Pro experience. The Fold offers a much larger interior screen in a distinct design. Google’s slab-phone announcement and Fold announcement confirm the names and launch family.

Pixel 9: the standard flagship

The Pixel 9 is the straightforward choice for someone who wants a 6.3-inch phone and does not need the Pro camera system. It has 12GB of RAM and a dual rear-camera system. Its display is not the LTPO Super Actua panel used by the Pro models.

  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint., Etc. For Developers, Carrier Unlocked models will not allow an Unlocked Boot Loader.

Pixel 9 Pro: the compact Pro

The Pixel 9 Pro is the lineup’s consequential addition for buyers who want a smaller premium phone. It shares the base Pixel 9’s 6.3-inch diagonal, but has a Pro display, 16GB of RAM and a triple rear-camera system with telephoto capability. The choice between these two 6.3-inch phones is therefore about features and price, not screen size.

Pixel 9 Pro XL: the larger Pro

The Pro XL pairs the Pro feature set with a 6.8-inch display and a larger 5,060mAh typical battery. It is the option for people who prioritize screen area and battery capacity; Google does not position it as having a fundamentally different Pro camera system from the smaller Pro.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold: a different category

The Fold has an 8-inch inner display and a 6.3-inch cover display, but its appeal depends on wanting a foldable screen and using apps and multitasking workflows that benefit from it. It costs substantially more at its U.S. launch starting price and has different size, durability, camera and battery trade-offs. It should not be treated as a direct substitute for the Pro XL merely because both are premium Pixel 9 phones.

How to choose among the Pixel 9 phones

  • Choose Pixel 9 if you want the less expensive standard flagship and do not need a telephoto camera or the Pro display.
  • Choose Pixel 9 Pro if you want Pro cameras and display features in a 6.3-inch phone. It is the answer to the assumption that premium Pixel hardware requires a large handset.
  • Choose Pixel 9 Pro XL if a 6.8-inch screen and larger battery matter more than one-handed handling. Google presents it as the larger version of the Pro experience, not a categorically superior camera tier.
  • Choose Pixel 9 Pro Fold if the large foldable screen supports how you read, work or multitask, and you accept the different form factor and higher launch price.

Google’s published support policy gives the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL seven years of operating-system, Pixel Drop and security updates, measured from each phone’s first availability on the Google Store in the United States. Feature timing and availability can still vary by model, region, subscription or other eligibility conditions. The Fold’s support detail should be checked on Google’s support page rather than inferred from the slab-phone wording. See Google’s Pixel phone update policy.

What happened, and why the leak still matters

The March leak got the central slab-phone structure right: a standard Pixel 9, a smaller Pro and a larger Pro XL. Later leaks made the Fold’s place in the family more visible, and Google’s August announcement settled the count at four phones. For buyers, the lasting change was not simply a new XL label. It was the arrival of a compact Pro option alongside a standard phone of the same screen size and a larger Pro, with a Fold for those who specifically want a foldable device.
