Google Photos’ “Hide clutter from apps” setting is now documented for Android, so the old “coming soon” framing is out of date. It can hide backed-up content from other apps—including screenshots, GIFs and memes—from the main Photos view. It does not delete those files or free storage.
What Hide clutter does
The control is for content from other apps, not a universal filter that identifies every image a person might consider clutter. Google gives screenshots, GIFs and memes as examples; its documentation does not promise that every such item will be recognized or hidden.
Hiding changes what appears in the main Photos view. It is an organizational setting, not a privacy feature: hidden items remain in the library, and backed-up items continue to count toward Google Account storage under the usual rules.

The feature first drew attention in April 2024, when an unreleased “Hide clutter” label was found in Google Photos version 6.79.0.624777117. Google’s current Android help documentation now describes “Hide clutter from apps.” The older report’s menu path reflected an unreleased interface; use the current documented path below.

How to turn it on in Google Photos for Android
- Open Google Photos on your Android phone or tablet.
- Open a Photo stack.
- At the bottom, tap the thumbnail menu or More.
- Tap Manage settings.
- Under the content controls, make sure Show content from other apps is on.
- Choose Hide clutter from apps.
Google also lists Only show backed-up content and Customize by app as choices in this settings flow. Menu labels or availability may differ between app builds or rollouts; Google’s help page is the verified reference for the current Android instructions.
Choose what appears from each app
With Customize by app, you can set a rule for an individual app. Google lists these options:

- Not customized: Use the general setting.
- Show all: Show that app’s content.
- Hide clutter: Hide content categorized as clutter from that app.
- Hide all: Hide that app’s content from the Photos view.
Per-app settings override the main setting. For example, an app set to Hide all can remain hidden even when your general choice shows content from other apps.

Only show backed-up content is different from Hide clutter from apps: the former limits what is shown to content from other apps that has been backed up; the latter hides backed-up app content treated as clutter. Google provides examples, not a complete user-editable list of the files it classifies as clutter.

Where to look if a photo disappears
A hidden image has not necessarily been deleted. Check Collections > On this device and open the relevant device or app folder. Google’s missing-photo guidance also recommends checking relevant folders when Hide clutter or Hide all is enabled.
To identify an image’s source folder, open it, tap More, then About, and look under Details. If it still seems missing, check the following before deleting or changing anything:

- Confirm that Google Photos is signed in to the account where the image was backed up.
- Check whether backup completed. A local-only image may be on the device but not in the backed-up library.
- Look in Collections > On this device and the relevant app folder.
- Check Archive and any Photo stacks; these are separate reasons an image may not appear as expected.
- Review the general hide setting and the relevant app’s individual rule.
Google lists account selection, backup status, Archive, Photo stacks and app-folder visibility among possible causes of missing items. Device-folder backup controls whether content is uploaded; changing backup is not the same as changing what appears in the Photos view.

If your goal is a cleaner timeline, Hide clutter can save you from archiving many items one by one. If your goal is to reclaim Google Account storage, use Google Photos’ storage-management tools or delete items you no longer need; hiding is not a cleanup method.

Platform and sharing limits
Google currently documents this hide-clutter control for Android phones and tablets. The available support material does not establish an equivalent control path for iPhone, iPad or the web, so do not assume the same setting is available there.
Google also says photos backed up from apps are not available for Partner Sharing. That is separate from Hide clutter and may matter if you expect app-saved images to be shared automatically.
Who should use it?
It is useful if screenshots, saved memes or other app-sourced images overwhelm your main timeline and you want them kept in the library without seeing them alongside camera photos. The trade-off is that a useful image saved from an app may be hidden along with disposable material, and per-app overrides can make the result less obvious later. If you use it, remember that hidden means out of the main view—not gone.
