Google Messages replaced its compact recipient panel with a fuller-screen picker that adds recent-chat previews, search and multi-recipient selection. The change was reported rolling out to stable users by July 1, 2024; it is a historical rollout, not a new 2026 announcement. The exact interface on a phone today may differ.
What changed in the share flow?
Previously, choosing Google Messages from Android’s system share sheet opened a smaller recipient panel for selecting a conversation or contact. In the redesign, the app opens a full-screen Select recipients screen. The interface gives more information before you choose where content goes:
- Up to five recent conversations appear near the top, with a snippet of the latest sent message.
- More recent conversations expands the recent-chat list.
- A search control helps find a conversation or contact.
- A contact list appears below the recent conversations.
- You can select multiple recipients; their profile avatars appear in a row at the top.
After choosing recipients, tap Next. The following step includes a Share individually option. These labels and layout are those documented during the 2024 rollout; later app builds may differ. 9to5Google reported the interface and rollout details.
How to use the redesigned picker
- In another Android app, open the photo, link or other content you want to send and tap its Share control.
- Choose Messages or Google Messages from Android’s share sheet.
- On Select recipients, choose a recent conversation, search for one, or select a contact.
- If needed, select additional recipients, then check the names and avatars shown at the top.
- Tap Next and review the next sharing step, including whether Share individually is offered, before sending.
Check the conversation name and, where shown, its message snippet before proceeding. Similar names or multiple threads can make the wrong destination easy to pick. Button wording and placement can vary with the Messages build, Android version, device manufacturer and rollout state.

It is not only for sharing from other apps
The reported picker also appeared when forwarding an existing message from inside a conversation and when using the camera shortcut on the Google Messages home screen. That makes the redesign broader than a change to Android’s system share sheet alone: the recipient-selection experience was reported across several ways of starting a send.
What happens when you choose multiple people?
The interface supports selecting more than one recipient and shows a Share individually option after Next. That label suggests a way to send content separately, but the available reporting does not establish exactly how every combination of recipients, existing conversations and messaging protocols is handled. Do not assume that multi-selection will always create a group chat—or always send separate one-to-one messages—or that it will always use RCS.

Google Messages supports SMS, MMS and RCS, but RCS availability depends on factors including device, carrier, region and plan. The delivery experience can therefore differ by conversation and recipient. Review the selected recipients and the final action before sending. See Google’s help page on sending and reading messages and the Google Messages Play listing for general app and messaging information; neither documents every detail of this redesigned picker.

The picker adds useful context: recent-message snippets can help distinguish conversations, while search and a contact list make less-recent recipients easier to find. Selecting several people in one flow may also suit users who regularly share the same item with multiple recipients.
The trade-off is a larger, busier screen and potentially more steps than the old compact panel, especially when sending to a familiar contact. That is a usability assessment, not a claim about Google’s stated design rationale. Google did not provide a formal explanation for the change in the reporting available here.
When did it roll out, and which version was involved?
The redesign was first reported in testing in October 2023, with a detailed observation on June 14, 2024. On July 1, 2024, 9to5Google reported that it was widely available to stable Google Messages users running version 20240603_01_RC01. “Widely available” does not mean every user or device received it at the same time, and that version number is a historical reference—not a recommendation or indication of the current release.

The evidence available for the change is independent reporting rather than a Google announcement or a Google changelog entry specifically documenting this interface. Google’s Play Store listing identifies Google Messages as its messaging app but does not confirm whether this exact layout remains unchanged in 2026.

- Check the app you selected. Android may show Messages and other sharing destinations; choose Google Messages if that is where you expect to send the content.
- Update through Google Play. Open the Google Messages listing and check for an available update, then try the share flow again. The 2024 build number above is not a current update target.
- Allow for rollout and device differences. The original distribution was not necessarily simultaneous, and app, Android and manufacturer versions can affect the screens and labels you see.
- Do not sideload an old APK just to match the screenshots. Third-party version listings are not Google’s installation guidance, and installing one does not guarantee the same experience on your device.
Not seeing the 2024 layout does not by itself prove that Messages is broken. The rollout report does not establish a universal Android-version requirement or a fix that will force the interface to appear.
