Google Maps has a Power saving mode for driving navigation on the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. It replaces the regular navigation screen with a simplified map on the lock screen after you press the phone’s Power button. Google says it can add up to four hours of navigation time, but that is a maximum from Google’s tests—not a guaranteed saving for every trip.
The mode is for driving only, works in portrait orientation, and is not the same as Android’s Battery Saver or Pixel’s Extreme Battery Saver.
What Google Maps Power saving mode does
Power saving mode presents a simple, low-power map on the lock screen while driving directions are active. It is designed to keep essential guidance, including the route and upcoming turns, visible while reducing the amount of map detail and interaction compared with the full Google Maps interface.
It is not merely a dimmed version of the usual map, nor a replacement for the full interactive view. If you need to explore the map, search for a place, or use other detailed Maps controls, return to the regular navigation screen.

Google’s support documentation describes the feature’s behavior but does not promise that every element of normal navigation—such as all traffic details or map layers—will remain available in the reduced view.
Which phones support it?

Google’s current Pixel support page lists these four models. It does not list older Pixel phones, other Android devices, or iPhones as supported. The support page does not describe the feature as US-exclusive; this guide covers the US Pixel 10 lineup. Availability on a particular phone can still depend on its software and Maps rollout.

How to turn the setting on or off
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then tap Settings.
- Tap Navigation.
- Under Driving options, find Power saving mode and switch it on or off.
Google says the setting is on by default. If the simplified view does not appear, check that it is enabled here.

- In Maps, search for your destination and select it.
- Choose Driving and start navigation.
- Press the phone’s physical Power button. Maps should show the simplified navigation map on the lock screen.
Tap the screen or press the Power button again to return to the regular Maps view. Google says the mode exits automatically at the destination, returning Maps to its full version. To leave the lock screen and use the phone, swipe up and authenticate with Face Unlock, fingerprint or your passcode as prompted.

Limitations to know before relying on it
- Driving only: It is not available for walking, cycling, transit or other non-driving navigation.
- Portrait only: Google says Power saving mode works only in portrait orientation. A landscape-only dashboard mount makes the feature impractical unless you reposition the phone.
- Simplified display: The reduced view prioritizes essential route guidance rather than the full Maps experience.
- Not a guarantee against a dead battery: GPS, cellular use, screen settings, background activity and conditions such as heat still affect battery use.
For long trips, it is a useful option when the phone is mounted vertically and you mainly need turn-by-turn guidance. If you need the full map visible, use standard navigation instead.
How much battery can it save?
Google’s November 2025 Pixel update says Power saving mode can provide up to four additional hours of navigation time. Treat “up to” as a ceiling from Google’s testing, not an expected or independently verified result for ordinary drivers.

- Instead of typing, use Gemini Live to have a natural, free-flowing conversation; point your camera at what you're curious about – like a sea creature at the aquarium – or chat - Gemini to brainstorm ideas or get things done across apps[5]
Google says its estimate came from testing in California in late 2025 with fully charged Pixel 10 phones, screen brightness at 90%, and Adaptive Brightness disabled. Your result can differ with brightness, signal strength, GPS use, route and traffic conditions, temperature, other apps, charging, and the specific phone and software. Google’s announcement is available in its November 2025 Pixel Drop.
If Power saving mode does not appear
- Confirm your phone is a Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL or Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
- Make sure you have started navigation in Driving mode.
- Check Maps → profile picture or initial → Settings → Navigation → Driving options → Power saving mode.
- After navigation starts, press the physical Power button. The feature is not a separate navigation mode to select before starting the route.
- Update Google Maps and install any available Pixel system updates, then restart the phone if the setting is still missing.
Google does not publish a minimum Maps version for the feature. If the option remains absent on a supported model after updates, it may not yet be available on that device’s software or rollout. The documented setting and button steps are the first things to check.

How it differs from Pixel battery modes
Google Maps Power saving mode changes the navigation display during a drive. Android’s system-wide Battery Saver and Pixel’s Extreme Battery Saver are separate phone-level battery features; enabling one does not mean the Maps setting is enabled, or vice versa. Do not combine their battery-life figures with Google’s “up to four hours” navigation claim. Google lists Pixel 10 specifications and separate battery claims on its US Pixel 10 specifications page.
If you already own a supported Pixel and take long drives, the feature is worth trying—especially when you cannot keep the phone charging and can mount it vertically. It is a narrow convenience, not a strong reason by itself to buy a Pixel 10; for a short drive or a landscape-mounted phone, its trade-offs may outweigh the benefit.
