The pin remains, but its colors now blend into a four-color gradient, with a thinner outer ring and a larger center. This is an icon update—not a redesign of Maps’ navigation or core interface—and the staged rollout does not mean every user will see it at once.
What changed in the Google Maps icon?
The familiar map pin is still the focus. The older icon used more sharply divided color sections; the new version blends the colors together for a softer look. Its outer ring is thinner and its central circle larger. The change concerns the consumer app icon and associated app surfaces, not every Google Maps logo or developer asset. 9to5Google reported the visual changes; Google has not published a dedicated Maps announcement explaining this icon’s design.
When is the new icon arriving?
Reports of the redesigned icon appeared on March 3, 2026. The rollout was associated with Google Maps for Android version 26.09.06.873668274 and the iOS version 26.09.5. Those are reported release references, not a promise that every device received the icon with those versions: distribution is staged and can vary by platform, device and app-store release. The rollout report covers both platforms.
Google’s wider gradient identity predates the Maps change. On September 29, 2025, Google announced a brighter gradient treatment for its “G” mark, saying it would expand across products and services. Google described the broader treatment as preserving its four colors while expressing creative energy and its direction in the AI era. Extending that visual language to Maps is a reasonable interpretation, but Google has not specifically stated that rationale for the Maps icon. Google’s announcement explains the company-wide mark.

Does the icon update change Google Maps?
No Maps feature change is established by the icon alone. A new home-screen image does not indicate that a user has received different navigation, map rendering, permissions or location handling. Google has announced other Maps changes separately, including Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation; those are product features with their own availability, not consequences of this icon update. Google’s feature announcement describes those changes.

How to get the new icon
- Open the Google Play Store on Android or the App Store on iPhone, search for Google Maps, and verify the publisher is Google LLC.
- Install an update if the store offers one. Updating improves the chance of receiving the new asset, but does not guarantee immediate activation.
- Close and reopen the launcher or restart the phone if the app has updated but the icon still looks unchanged.
- On Android, check whether the old image belongs to a manually created shortcut, work profile or cloned app rather than the main Maps app.
- On iPhone, if you use a custom icon made with Shortcuts, remove and recreate that Home Screen shortcut; it can retain its own image independently of the app.
The official Android listing identifies the app as com.google.android.apps.maps. Use the official store listing rather than third-party download sites; sideloading an APK for a cosmetic change is not warranted. Google Maps on Google Play.

Why might the old icon still appear?
- Staged distribution: The new asset may not yet be active for your device or region, even if the app is current.
- Store or launcher caching: The app may be updated while the launcher continues displaying a cached image.
- Custom presentation: A manufacturer’s icon mask, third-party launcher or icon pack can change how the supplied icon appears.
- Another app instance: A shortcut, widget, work-profile copy or cloned app may not use the main app’s current icon.
- Separate platform timing: Android and iOS releases need not appear on the same schedule.
The Google Play listing reviewed for this update showed a July 8, 2026 app update, but its public changelog mentioned general bug fixes rather than the icon specifically. An app-store update date therefore does not establish that the new icon is active on every phone.

No. For Maps’ 15th anniversary in February 2020, Google introduced a different app icon alongside a redesigned experience organized around five tabs: Explore, Commute, Saved, Contribute and Updates. The 2026 change is another iteration of the consumer app’s visual identity. Google’s 2020 anniversary post describes that earlier redesign.

It is also distinct from Google Maps Platform’s 2022 red-pin update. That change applied to default markers in Maps JavaScript, Android Maps SDK and iOS Maps SDK; it did not affect custom developer markers. It should not be read as a change to the consumer app icon.
