Google launched three new wired Nest products on October 1, 2025: the $99.99 Nest Cam Indoor (3rd gen), $149.99 Nest Cam Outdoor (2nd gen), and $179.99 Nest Doorbell (3rd gen). Alongside them, Google is rebuilding the Google Home app around camera activity, automations, and Gemini-powered features.
The hardware brings 2K-class HDR video, wider views, and improved low-light performance. The bigger change, however, is the subscription model: live viewing and limited event access remain available without a plan, while longer history, 24/7 recording, AI descriptions, Home Brief, and camera-history search depend on Google Home Premium, device eligibility, and regional rollout.

These are two cameras and one doorbell—not three security cameras in the narrow sense. All went on sale on October 1, 2025 through the Google Store and major retailers.

How the three products differ
Nest Cam Indoor, wired, 3rd gen
The $99.99 indoor model is the least expensive of the three and is aimed at rooms, entryways, pets, and children. Google lists it in Snow, Hazel, and Berry.
Reported specifications describe a 2K-class image of approximately 2,560 × 1,440 pixels and a 152-degree diagonal field of view. The wide view can cover a substantial portion of a room, although a broad-angle lens may introduce distortion around the edges and cannot compensate for a poorly chosen mounting position.
It is wired-only. Buyers need a nearby outlet and a practical way to route the cable. It is not weather-rated, so it should not be installed in exposed outdoor locations.

Nest Cam Outdoor, wired, 2nd gen
The $149.99 outdoor camera is designed for permanent installations covering yards, driveways, gates, and exterior doors. A two-pack is available for $249.99. Color choices are Snow and Hazel.
Google lists the camera as IP65-rated and specifies an operating range of -4°F to 104°F (-20°C to 40°C). IP65 indicates protection from dust and water jets; it does not mean the camera can be submerged. The power cable, outlet, connectors, and cable junctions still need an appropriate installation that protects them from exposure.
The outdoor model also uses a reported 2,560 × 1,440 image and 152-degree diagonal field of view. Its wired power makes it the more suitable of these products for eligible 24/7 recording, but it is less flexible than a battery camera when power is unavailable or the mounting position changes frequently.
Nest Doorbell, wired, 3rd gen
The $179.99 wired doorbell comes in Snow, Hazel, and Linen. Its reported 2,048 × 2,048 image is more square than the cameras’ format, helping show both a visitor and the area near the ground where packages may be left. Google lists a 166-degree diagonal field of view.

Before buying, check that the existing doorbell wiring and transformer are compatible. The doorbell is not a battery-powered model, and this launch did not introduce a new battery-powered Nest Cam or battery-powered Nest Doorbell.
What is new in the hardware?
- 2K-class HDR video: The indoor and outdoor cameras use reported 2,560 × 1,440 resolution, while the doorbell uses a reported square 2,048 × 2,048 image.
- Wider and taller views: The cameras list 152-degree diagonal fields of view and the doorbell lists 166 degrees. Diagonal measurements are not directly comparable with competitors that quote horizontal field of view.
- Improved low-light performance: Google says the new devices perform better in low light. That claim should not be treated as an independent guarantee of better night-time identification; sensor quality, illumination, HDR behavior, compression, and placement all matter.
- Gemini-oriented processing: The products are designed to interpret events in more descriptive terms rather than merely reporting generic motion.
- Privacy indicators and encryption: Google says video is encrypted, and a visible green activity indicator shows when the camera is processing or streaming video.
- New colors: The indoor camera is available in Snow, Hazel, and Berry; the outdoor camera in Snow and Hazel; and the doorbell in Snow, Hazel, and Linen.
Resolution alone is not a complete image-quality verdict. A 2K image may provide more detail in suitable conditions, but glare, backlighting, motion, night lighting, network bandwidth, and the camera’s position can determine whether footage is actually useful.
The redesigned Google Home app
Google is positioning the redesigned Home app as the main control center for newer and older supported Nest products, as well as thermostats, locks, speakers, and displays. The practical change is more important than the visual redesign: camera controls, event history, and automations are being consolidated instead of being split between Google Home and the Nest app.
The new layout is organized into three primary areas:
- Home: Household overview and device controls.
- Activity: Notifications, camera events, and history.
- Automations: Rules, schedules, and automated actions.
Google also highlights faster live-view loading, improved camera-history browsing, and natural-language interaction through features such as Ask Home and Home Brief. Availability depends on the device, account, country, language, and rollout stage.
This is not proof that the Nest app has been completely discontinued. Google is moving newer Nest-device management toward Google Home, but older products and legacy functions remain model-specific. Existing owners should check Google’s guidance on video history in the Nest app and confirm whether their model supports Google Home setup, Google Home for web, playback, 24/7 history, and current Premium features.
What Gemini for Home adds
Gemini for Home is an interpretation layer over camera events and other smart-home data; it does not replace the camera hardware. Google advertises capabilities including:

- Natural-language searches across recorded camera history.
- AI-generated explanations of recorded events.
- A Home Brief that summarizes activity.
- Natural-language creation and editing of automations.
- Questions about what happened at home.
These features should be treated as assistance, not definitive identification or evidence. Gemini can confuse people, animals, packages, vehicles, logos, and actions. It can also miss short, obscured, poorly lit, or out-of-frame events. Camera angle, lighting, network connectivity, available recording history, language, subscription, and rollout status all affect the result.
Google says Gemini features are rolling out progressively. They are not necessarily available immediately to every owner worldwide. Consult Google’s Gemini for Home support page for current availability.
What works without a subscription?
Google’s support documentation says newer wired cameras and doorbells can provide up to six hours of event-video previews without a subscription. That means access to event clips within the stated window—not six hours of continuous, permanent rolling video.
Without Google Home Premium, users should generally expect some combination of:
- Live video.
- Two-way talk.
- Basic activity detection.
- Limited event-video history.
- Google Home device controls.
- Certain basic intelligent alerts, depending on product and region.
The exact free feature set varies. Google’s event-history guidance and Google Home Premium comparison are the appropriate references for a specific country and device.

Google Home Premium: Standard versus Advanced
Google Home Premium is the current subscription framework for Google’s newer whole-home security and AI features. It replaces or rebrands the relevant second-generation Nest Aware subscription context, but entitlement details still vary by plan, country, device, and account.

Current subscription prices are not included here because Google can change them by country and date. Check the local Google checkout page before purchase. A trial may be offered with a new camera or doorbell; according to Google’s trial guidance, features can be lost or converted to paid service after the trial ends unless it is canceled under the applicable terms.

24/7 history requires both the Advanced plan and eligible wired hardware. It is not available for battery-powered Nest cameras or the battery-powered Nest Doorbell, even when the latter is connected to optional wiring.
Should existing Nest owners upgrade?
Upgrade if you specifically need a wider 2K-class view, a new wired outdoor installation, the doorbell’s square package-oriented framing, or access to newer Gemini features supported on your account and device.
Keep existing hardware if your current camera covers the area adequately, you are satisfied with its image quality and history workflow, or replacing it would create unnecessary wiring and installation work. A redesign of Google Home does not automatically make every older Nest camera obsolete, and older models may not receive every new Gemini capability.
Before replacing an existing device, verify migration and history behavior. Google Home and the Nest app do not offer identical support for every legacy model, so a familiar workflow may change even when the hardware remains usable.
Power, cloud dependence, and reliability
The wired-versus-battery decision is central. Wired cameras are better suited to permanent placement and, where supported, continuous recording. Battery cameras are easier to install and reposition but require charging or battery replacement and generally cannot provide 24/7 history.
All three new products are cloud-connected. A power failure stops a wired camera, while a network outage can prevent live viewing, cloud uploads, notifications, and AI interpretation. Higher-resolution live video and continuous recording can also increase network usage. The research for this launch does not establish a local-storage option, so buyers who require recordings to remain on-site should consider a different product category.

Google says video is encrypted and is not used for unrelated advertising targeting or personalization. That is a company privacy commitment, not a claim that cloud-connected cameras carry no privacy risk.
Gemini features may process camera events and related home context to generate descriptions, summaries, and searches. Descriptive notifications can reveal sensitive information on a lock screen or to anyone sharing access to the household. Familiar-face features and emergency functions also have geographic restrictions; Google notes, for example, that familiar-face availability differs by region and is not available for cameras and doorbells in Illinois.
Practical safeguards include:
- Use camera-off modes or recording schedules in private areas.
- Review household-member permissions before sharing a Home structure.
- Enable two-step verification on the Google account.
- Control notification previews on phones and smart displays.
- Tell household members and visitors where cameras are installed.
- Review recording, activity, and familiar-face settings before enabling AI features.
Who should buy these Nest products?
- Choose the Nest Cam Indoor if you want the least expensive wired Google camera for an indoor room and already use Google Home.
- Choose the Nest Cam Outdoor if you have safe, reliable outdoor power and want a permanent installation or possible 24/7 recording.
- Choose the Nest Doorbell if you are in the United States or Canada, have compatible doorbell wiring, and prioritize package visibility and Google Home integration.
- Consider another system if battery placement, local storage, no recurring fee, professional monitoring, optical zoom, stronger night performance, or Alexa, Apple Home, or Home Assistant compatibility matters more than Google’s ecosystem.
The simple subscription test is:
- No subscription: live view, basic alerts, and occasional event checking are enough.
- Standard: you want around a month of event history and smarter alerts, but not continuous recording.
- Advanced: you need longer history, eligible 24/7 recording, AI descriptions, Home Brief, or Ask Home camera-history search.
Confirm the exact entitlement in your country before paying, because Google says Gemini features and Premium benefits vary by region, language, device, and rollout stage.
