Google Keep is the better default for quick notes, lists, reminders, collaboration and access from Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and a browser. Samsung Notes is the better tool for Galaxy owners who write with an S Pen, annotate PDFs, record richer meeting or study notes, or need a page-based workspace. Many people get the best result by using Keep for capture and Samsung Notes for handwriting-heavy documents.

The fundamental difference

These apps overlap, but they are designed around different jobs. Google Keep is a lightweight digital sticky-note system: capture an idea, make a checklist, set a reminder, share it and find it later. Samsung Notes is a document and handwriting workspace built around Galaxy phones and tablets, especially S Pen devices.

That distinction matters more than a feature checklist. Keep prioritizes speed and retrieval; Samsung Notes prioritizes richer composition, pen input and document markup.

When Google Keep is the better choice

You use more than one phone or computer

Google documents Keep apps for Android and iPhone/iPad, with computer access through keep.google.com. That makes it the safer choice if you switch between Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus or iPhone, or work across Windows and Mac. You sign in with a Google account rather than depending on a particular phone manufacturer. Google’s current access guidance is at Google Keep device and browser support.

You mostly capture short-lived information

Keep is particularly efficient for grocery lists, errands, ideas, phone numbers, packing lists and temporary reference notes. Labels, colors, pins, filters, archiving and search provide organization without requiring a folder-heavy system. Google describes these capture and organization features on its Keep product page.

  • TYPE IT IN. TRANSFORM IT FAST: Enhance any shot in seconds on your smartphone by using Photo Assist² with Galaxy AI.³ Add objects, restore details, or apply new styles by simply typing or tapping

  • HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone

You need reminders and shared lists

Reminders are a core Keep workflow: “buy this later,” “call the contractor” and “bring the passport” can live with the note that contains the context. Shared notes let other people edit text, lists, images, drawings and audio, and collaborators can also label, color, archive or add reminders. If the owner deletes a shared note, it is deleted for everyone; Google documents that behavior in its sharing help.

You use Google Workspace

Keep can send a note to Google Docs, which is useful when a quick outline grows into a formal document. It is not a replacement for a full word processor, but it creates a low-friction path from capture to a longer document.

Where Google Keep falls short

  • It is not a full document editor or a deep knowledge-management system with databases, nested project structures or bidirectional links.
  • Google’s help documentation says mobile apps support offline access, while computers do not have a comparable offline mode: offline and Chrome-app guidance.
  • If the same note is edited on multiple devices while one is offline, Keep can show a conflict and ask you to choose a version or keep both: Google’s conflict guidance.
  • The old Chrome app was discontinued; use the web version instead.

When Samsung Notes is the better choice

You write with an S Pen

Samsung’s documentation treats handwriting as a core Notes workflow. On compatible Galaxy devices, you can write with an S Pen, use a finger or keyboard, edit handwriting and convert handwriting to text. Pen latency and pressure behavior depend on the particular Galaxy phone or tablet, so this is a device advantage rather than a universal app benchmark.

You annotate PDFs or mix media in one page

Samsung Notes is suited to notes that combine typed text, handwriting, drawings and imported documents. That makes it a stronger choice for marking lecture slides, signing or reviewing PDFs, sketching diagrams and keeping visual meeting notes. Samsung’s support page covers these workflows and export options: Samsung Notes support.

You want document-style exports

Samsung lists export to Samsung Notes format, PDF, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, image and text files. Exporting an appearance is not the same as preserving every native feature: labels, reminders, collaboration state, attachments and editability may not survive in another format.

You use a Galaxy tablet

A large Galaxy tablet with an S Pen exposes more of Samsung Notes’ strengths than a phone alone. Samsung Cloud synchronization and Galaxy-specific features are most useful when your primary devices are supported Galaxy products.

Samsung Notes limitations to check first

  • Compatible Windows access should not be read as a universal Samsung Notes experience. Verify Microsoft Store availability, Windows requirements, account setup and synchronization for your exact PC; there is no evidence here of a full equivalent on Mac, iPhone, iPad or a general-purpose web app.
  • Sharing may mean sending a Samsung Notes file or an export rather than the same simultaneous, multi-user editing model found in Keep.
  • Cloud and synchronization options can change with device software and account settings. Check the current settings on your Galaxy device rather than relying on an older guide.
  • Do not assume that handwriting search or text search inside every PDF attachment works identically across all app versions and devices.

Handwriting, search and retrieval

For serious pen input, Samsung Notes is the clear choice because Samsung explicitly supports S Pen writing and handwriting-to-text conversion. Keep can store drawings and image-based notes, but Google’s product description emphasizes capture, lists, photos, drawings, audio, reminders and collaboration rather than a document-annotation environment.

Keep is strong at finding short notes, labels, list items and attached content. Google says Keep content is processed for functions such as handwriting recognition and category-based search; recognition quality still depends on handwriting, image quality and other input conditions. Read the details in Google’s Keep privacy documentation. Samsung supports handwriting conversion, but a complete, version-independent matrix for OCR indexing across every Samsung Notes attachment type is not established, so test the exact device and app version if searchable handwriting or PDF text is essential.

Collaboration and sharing

Choose Keep for a family shopping list, a shared trip checklist or a small team’s simple action list. Invite collaborators from the note, and they can edit the supported content rather than merely receiving a copy. Confirm that everyone is signed into the intended Google Account; an invitation can appear missing when the recipient is using another account.

Use Samsung Notes sharing when the goal is to send a note or deliver an export, and verify whether the recipient needs Samsung Notes to open the native file. “Share” and “export” do not by themselves establish a live, cross-platform collaborative workspace.

Exporting and changing ecosystems

Google Keep

Google Takeout can export note content, list items, voice recordings, drawings, images, colors, pinned and archived status, collaborators and labels. Work or school accounts may restrict available downloads. Start at Google Keep data export. The resulting archive is not a one-click import into Samsung Notes.

Samsung Notes

Export representative notes in native Samsung Notes format and in the formats you expect to use elsewhere, such as PDF, Word, image and text. A PDF may preserve appearance while losing native editability; a text export may lose handwriting layout, images, audio, checkboxes, labels and reminders.

Migration checklist

  1. Export a sample containing typed notes, handwriting, images, audio, checklists and PDFs.
  2. Open every exported type on the device and computer you plan to use.
  3. Check formatting, attachments, page order, searchability and editability.
  4. Keep the original app installed until the sample has passed inspection.
  5. Do not delete source notes until you have a second copy and have confirmed that important content survived.

Privacy, security and AI qualifications

Google says Keep data is encrypted in transit and at rest, while also explaining that content may be processed for handwriting recognition and category-based search. Samsung Notes offers note locking. A lock is not the same as end-to-end encryption, and neither app should be treated as a password manager or dedicated secure vault. Protect the underlying Google or Samsung account, review device lock settings and remember that exports create additional copies.

Samsung’s Note Assist/Galaxy AI features are available only on selected phones and tablets running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later. Samsung lists a 200–4,000-character range for the described features, plus a Samsung account and internet connection; language, region and model also matter. Basic Galaxy AI features are described as free, while enhanced or third-party features may have different terms. See the current Samsung requirements. Google’s Keep help center also lists Gemini-related functions, but eligibility depends on account, language and availability, so do not assume every Keep user has them: Google Keep Help.

Best app by scenario

Scenario Recommendation Reason
Shopping or household list Google Keep Fast checklist editing, reminders and straightforward collaboration
Mixed Android/iPhone household Google Keep Documented Android, iPhone/iPad and browser access
Galaxy S Pen handwriting Samsung Notes Native pen input and handwriting-to-text support
Student marking lecture PDFs Samsung Notes Document-oriented pages and PDF annotation
Typed office meeting notes Google Keep for short capture; Samsung Notes for richer pages Choose based on whether reminders and sharing or visual composition matter more
Changing from Samsung to another phone brand Google Keep Less dependent on Samsung hardware and has documented iOS/web access
Long-term structured knowledge base Neither by default Consider OneNote, Notion or Obsidian for notebooks, databases or linked files

When another app makes more sense

  • Microsoft OneNote is stronger for notebooks, sections, pages, work or school environments and Microsoft 365 integration.
  • Notion suits databases, wikis, project planning and team workspaces, but is more complex for a quick list.
  • Obsidian is aimed at local Markdown files, backlinks and long-term control over your data.
  • Goodnotes and Nebo are worth considering for serious handwriting and PDF work on supported non-Samsung tablets.

How to decide in 30 seconds

  1. If you regularly use an S Pen, annotate PDFs or write long visual notes, choose Samsung Notes.
  2. If you need iPhone, iPad, Mac or browser access, choose Google Keep.
  3. If your notes are mainly lists, reminders and shared household information, choose Google Keep.
  4. If you need both kinds of work, keep quick capture and shared tasks in Keep and use Samsung Notes for handwriting, study material, sketches and PDFs.
  5. If you may leave Samsung hardware, test exports before making Samsung Notes your only archive.
