Short answer: Choose Google Keep for instant capture, lists and reminders; Microsoft OneNote for structured notebooks, research, school, work and collaboration; or Samsung Notes for Galaxy-first handwriting, S Pen features and PDF annotation. They are not identical products: Keep is a lightweight capture tool, OneNote a full notebook workspace, and Samsung Notes a Galaxy-optimized multimedia notebook.

Feature availability varies by operating system, device, app version, account and region. Google’s current Keep feature list is documented at Google Keep Help; Microsoft’s version and licensing details are in its OneNote versions guide; Samsung’s supported features and requirements are listed in its Samsung Notes support page.
What each app is designed to do
Google Keep: a digital sticky-note and reminder system
Keep opens quickly and keeps decisions to a minimum. You can create text notes, checklists, image notes and drawings, then organize them with labels, colors, pinning and archive. Search and reminders make it effective for shopping, errands, temporary information and ideas. Notes can be shared or sent to other applications, and Keep is available through Android, iPhone/iPad and the web.

Long documents, deeply nested projects and large reference libraries become harder to navigate, and a drawing is better treated as a quick sketch than as a full handwriting or PDF-markup workflow.

Microsoft OneNote: a notebook and collaborative workspace
OneNote uses notebook → section → page → subpage organization. Pages support rich text, free-form positioning, handwriting, drawings, attachments, printouts and links. Search works across notebooks, while tags and shared notebooks support ongoing projects, classes, meetings and research archives.
OneNote apps are available for Windows, macOS, the web, Android and iPhone/iPad. Supported versions can be downloaded and used free; Office 2019 or Microsoft 365 can add premium capabilities and cloud storage. The current Windows desktop app is called OneNote and replaces the older OneNote 2016 branding. OneNote for Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025, so avoid choosing it from an old tutorial.
The Windows desktop app supports local notebooks as well as cloud notebooks. OneNote for the web works with cloud notebooks, so notebook location and account ownership matter when planning access and backup.
Samsung Notes: a Galaxy-first multimedia notebook
Samsung Notes combines typed notes with S Pen handwriting, handwriting-to-text conversion, drawings, templates, note covers, folders and subfolders. It can import PDFs for annotation, record audio on supported devices and export notes as Samsung Notes files, PDF, Word, PowerPoint, image or text.
Its strongest experience is on supported Galaxy phones and tablets. Samsung Cloud synchronization is designed for Galaxy devices, and some tools depend on a particular Galaxy model, Android/One UI release, Samsung account or internet connection. It is therefore not simply Samsung’s version of Keep: the pen, PDF and hardware integration are the reason to choose it.

Organization and finding old notes
Keep favors speed
Labels, colors, pins, archive and search are enough for dozens or hundreds of lightweight notes. A grocery list, travel reminder and idea can be found without deciding which folder to use. If your archive becomes a collection of long pages, however, labels do not provide the explicit hierarchy that a notebook system does.
OneNote favors durable structure
Use a notebook for a subject or project, sections for major areas and pages or subpages for individual meetings, lessons or topics. Tags, links, attachments and search keep related material together. The risk is over-architecting: a blank notebook can feel complex, and very large notebooks require sensible naming and occasional cleanup.

Samsung Notes favors folders plus visual documents
Folders, subfolders, sorting, filtering, templates and note covers suit classes, projects and handwritten material. Search is most dependable for typed or converted text; handwritten content and recordings may not be as easily searchable as ordinary text, depending on device and version.
Handwriting, drawings and PDFs
Samsung Notes is the clearest choice for a Galaxy with an S Pen. You can write, edit handwriting, convert it to text, import a PDF, draw or annotate over it, and export the result. This is particularly useful for lecture slides, forms, diagrams and contracts.
OneNote is the strongest cross-platform ink alternative. It offers handwriting and drawing on compatible phones, tablets and computers without tying the workflow to Samsung hardware. The writing feel and available tools depend on the display, stylus, operating system and app version, so no universal latency winner can be stated without testing your specific hardware.

Keep supports drawings and image notes, which is adequate for a quick sketch or annotation but not a replacement for a dedicated handwritten notebook or PDF workflow.

Keep for lightweight shared lists
Share a checklist or short note with family, a roommate or a colleague. It is well suited to groceries, packing lists and simple reminders. Google documents sharing and sending notes to other apps in its Keep Help Center and sharing guide.
OneNote for shared workspaces
Shared notebooks are designed for class notes, team research, project records and meeting documentation. Check whether you are sharing a page or an entire notebook, whether recipients have view or edit rights, and whether the notebook belongs in personal OneDrive or an organization’s SharePoint. Work and school administrators can restrict sharing, storage or access.
Samsung Notes for handoff, not broad co-editing
Samsung Notes can share an individual note in several file formats, making it useful for delivery or export. It is not the same as a continuously co-edited notebook platform.
Cross-platform access and ecosystem lock-in
Keep is the least demanding for mixed devices
Android and iPhone apps, browser access and a Chrome extension make Keep practical across Windows, Mac, Chromebook and Linux. Mobile widgets, voice input, reminders and some Google integrations can differ from the web experience, and all access depends on your Google account.

OneNote is broad, but version choice matters
Windows, Mac, web, Android and iOS coverage is extensive. Use the current OneNote app, not the retired Windows 10 client. Local notebooks are a Windows desktop capability; other clients generally rely on cloud notebooks.
Samsung Notes is Galaxy-centered
Samsung Cloud can synchronize notes between supported Galaxy devices. Samsung Notes can also feed selected notes into Microsoft’s OneNote feed:
- In Samsung Notes, open Menu → Settings.
- Choose the option to sync with Microsoft OneNote and sign in to the Microsoft account used for the feed.
- Select the Samsung Notes folders to synchronize.
- Open Outlook on the web or Outlook.com and open the OneNote feed.
This is a bridge, not two-way notebook synchronization. Microsoft states that Samsung notes shown in the feed cannot be created, edited or deleted there. If you regularly use an iPhone, Mac, Linux computer or non-Samsung Android phone, Samsung Notes is a risky default unless you are willing to export notes.

Keep
Keep syncs through your Google account and offers export and version-history documentation, but it does not present the same notebook-level conflict controls as OneNote. For important records, use Google’s export tools periodically and verify what the archive contains rather than assuming it reproduces the original visual layout.
OneNote
Cloud notebooks synchronize automatically and expose sync status, manual sync and error information. Microsoft documents cases where conflicts produce duplicate sections; resolving a conflict incorrectly can lose one set of changes. Keep cloud notebooks in the correct personal, work or school account, and do not mistake a local Windows notebook for an automatically backed-up copy.

Samsung Notes
To enable Galaxy synchronization, open Samsung Notes → Menu → Settings → Sync with Samsung Cloud, grant permissions and choose Wi‑Fi only or Wi‑Fi plus mobile data. For a separate copy, open a note, choose More options → Save as file, then select PDF, Word, PowerPoint, image or text.
Samsung documents an important portability exception: certain Galaxy AI translated PDF overlays do not support synchronization, sharing, saving or backup/restore in their original translated state. AI-enhanced content should therefore not be your only copy.
Export, migration and future-proofing
No service here is completely future-proof. Exporting a file is not always the same as creating a fully editable migration: drawings, recordings, handwriting, attachments, formatting and folder structure may change between applications.

- OneNote: powerful notebooks and several export paths, yet behavior depends on notebook location and whether you use desktop, web or mobile.
- Samsung Notes: convenient per-note exports, while native features and advanced content remain most dependent on Galaxy software.
Before leaving an ecosystem, export a representative sample: a typed note, checklist, drawing, PDF annotation, attachment and recording. Open the files in the destination app and keep a second copy of irreplaceable material.
Which app fits your workflow?
Choose Google Keep if…
- You need to capture something in seconds.
- Your notes are mostly lists, short text, images and reminders.
- You switch between Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, Chromebook or Linux.
- You want simple household sharing rather than a team notebook.
Choose OneNote if…
- You need notebooks that can grow for years.
- You keep course notes, meeting records, research, manuals or journals.
- You collaborate on substantial documents.
- You use Microsoft 365, OneDrive, Office, Outlook or SharePoint.
- You want cross-platform handwriting without depending on Samsung hardware.
Choose Samsung Notes if…
- You own a supported Galaxy phone or tablet and use an S Pen.
- You annotate lecture slides, diagrams, forms or PDFs.
- You value Galaxy-specific recording, handwriting and device integration.
- You accept that access outside Samsung hardware is limited or export-driven.
Use two apps only when the trade-off is worth it
Keep can serve as an intake tray while OneNote holds permanent project material, but copying and maintaining two archives creates duplication and migration work. Adopt that combination only if fast capture and deep organization are both essential.
When none of the three is ideal
Apple Notes is the natural choice for an all-Apple household. Obsidian suits readers who want local Markdown files and backlinks. Notion is stronger for databases and shared project systems. Joplin is a Markdown-oriented open-source option. Goodnotes and Nebo are more specialized for handwriting and PDF study. Each solves a different limitation and may introduce its own paid plan, setup or sync trade-offs.
