In March 2024, Google Keep for Android tested two ways to replace or refine the note-creation control on its main screen: a compact floating bottom bar and an expandable floating action button (FAB). They were alternative designs, not evidence of a feature rolling out to everyone. Google’s current help documentation still describes the familiar bottom-right Create control.
Two designs for creating notes
The experiment was reported in Google Keep version 5.24.x. It changed the creation controls on the main notes screen, not the note editor. The earlier interface used a rounded-square FAB; the test showed two possible ways to make common actions easier to reach while using less screen space. The March 2024 report and its update documented both variants.
A compact floating bottom bar
One version placed a short, pill-shaped control near the bottom of the screen. It put a new-note control in the middle, with shortcuts for creating a list and a drawing beside it. The bar used Dynamic Color styling, with the central control appearing darker than the surrounding surface. It was more compact than the previous large FAB and did not stretch across the screen like Google Chat’s floating bar.
The report noted that the smaller control could reveal roughly another line of note content. That was an observation about the interface, not a measured performance result.

An expandable FAB instead
An alternative kept a conventional FAB in the bottom-right area. Tapping it opened the same three options: a new note, a list, or a drawing. Unlike the persistent bar, this design kept the extra actions hidden until tapped, taking up less space while closed. It also required an additional tap and could make the available choices less obvious to new users.
The two designs should not be read as parts of one combined interface. The available report shows them as competing approaches being tested.

What changed—and what did not
Both tested layouts made three creation actions prominent: notes, lists, and drawings. The report said the redesigned surface no longer showed dedicated shortcuts for starting an audio note or a photo note. That describes the entry points in the test, not the removal of Keep’s audio or image capabilities.

Google’s Android note-creation instructions continue to document a bottom-right Create control with options for Audio, Image, Drawing, List, and Text. Google also documents creating image notes and adding voice recordings to text notes. The experiment therefore appears to have de-emphasized or hidden dedicated audio and photo shortcuts on the main creation surface; it does not establish that those functions were discontinued.

Why test a bar or an expandable button?
A persistent bar can make common actions visible without opening a menu, potentially improving access to lists and drawings. Its trade-off is that it occupies screen space all the time and presents several controls at once. On a narrow display or near gesture-navigation areas, the placement may also feel crowded.
An expandable FAB preserves a cleaner main screen and a familiar Android interaction pattern, but users must know to tap it to see the options. Both approaches appear aimed at making the control more compact than the older FAB while keeping frequently used creation actions close at hand. The report connected the experiment to Google’s broader Material You refinements and the earlier floating-bar direction in Chat; it did not establish that Keep’s design was a finalized Material 3 component or state Google’s official rationale.

Is the redesign available now?
The evidence supports a test observed in March 2024, not a confirmed universal release. It does not show that Google permanently selected either design or that every Android user received it. As of the Google help documentation reviewed on August 18, 2026, the documented workflow remains to open Keep, tap Create at the bottom right, and choose a note type. The documented options include Audio, Image, Drawing, List, and Text.

Keep also supports a dual-pane layout on large screens in landscape, so phone screenshots alone should not be treated as proof of how a control behaves on tablets or foldables. Google’s large-screen guidance describes that layout for screens wider than 600 dp in landscape.

If you do not see either tested design, that is consistent with the available evidence: the experiment was not confirmed as a standard interface. Users who create notes from the home screen can also use Keep’s Quick capture widget, independently of the in-app FAB.
