Google Keep no longer creates or delivers location-based reminders. If you used Keep to get an alert when you arrived at a supermarket or left work, Google Tasks does not restore that capability. Your notes remain, and date/time reminders have moved to Google Tasks, but old location triggers are no longer active. The strongest current replacement is Tasks.org, which supports arrival and departure reminders on Android.
What Google Keep changed
Google has moved Keep reminders into Google Tasks as part of its plan to make Tasks the central to-do system across Google products. The migration rolled out during 2025, and Google now says that Keep location-based reminders can no longer be created or received. See Google’s migration documentation and its original announcement.
This affects three different things:
- Keep notes: Your notes remain available.
- Date/time reminders: These are represented as Google Tasks and can also appear in Google Calendar.
- Location reminders: The old “remind me when I arrive” or “when I leave” trigger is gone from Keep and is not provided by Google Tasks.
Google Tasks remains useful for scheduled and recurring reminders, Calendar integration, and tasks managed through Google services such as Gemini. Gemini’s ability to work with Google Tasks does not add location-triggered alerts; it only manages the task system’s supported features.
Google’s October 2025 rollout update says existing date/time Keep reminders are automatically saved to Tasks.

What happened to existing Keep location reminders?
Migrated reminders can be viewed in Keep, Google Tasks, and Google Calendar. A migrated task may include a From Keep link back to the original note, and its date or time can be edited from Keep, Tasks, or Calendar. The task title is controlled from Tasks or Calendar; changing only the Keep note title does not change the reminder title.
The important distinction is that old location information may remain in the migrated task’s description without remaining an active geofence. An address in a task is not proof that Android will alert you when you arrive there.
Migration details worth checking
- Non-repeating reminders older than a year may be placed in an Old Google Keep Reminders list.
- Google documents a 100,000-task limit; if you exceed it, the oldest reminders may not migrate.
- Very long reminder titles may be shortened.
- Repeating intervals are capped at 1,000 days, weeks, months, or years.
- Dates beyond the year 3000 are adjusted to the year 2900.
Before deleting anything, open important migrated tasks, confirm their dates and times, follow any From Keep links you need, and copy location details into your replacement app. Keep the original note if it contains useful context.

Best free replacement: Tasks.org
Tasks.org’s documentation lists location reminders that notify you when you arrive at and/or depart from a chosen place. It is an independent, open-source Android task app and can synchronize with Google Tasks. That makes it a practical choice for someone leaving Keep’s ecosystem without abandoning Google’s task data entirely.
Its pricing page currently lists location-based reminders in the free tier, along with unlimited tasks, lists, tags, reminders, recurring tasks, and Google Tasks and Microsoft To Do connections. The page lists Tasks.org Cloud at $2.49 per month when billed annually or $29.99 per year, plus a name-your-price option starting at $0.99 per year. Paid plans add features such as cloud synchronization, desktop access, sharing, email-to-task, and additional synchronization options. Prices observed August 18, 2026 can change, so check the official pricing page before subscribing.
Tasks.org is not a one-click restoration of Keep’s old behavior. You may need to recreate the location trigger, and synchronization between services is not necessarily feature-perfect. Tasks.org notes that some task information does not synchronize with every third-party service; see its sync documentation.

How to create an Android arrival or departure reminder
Labels can vary by Tasks.org and Android version, but the workflow is generally:

- Install Tasks.org from Google Play if you want the location implementation documented by the project. The Play Store build requires Google Play Services.
- Choose a synchronization method. Google Tasks is the simplest choice for users coming from Keep; Tasks.org also supports Microsoft To Do, Tasks.org Cloud, CalDAV, EteSync, and other options.
- Allow notifications and any alarm-related access requested by Android.
- Grant location access. Android 10 and later may require separate Allow all the time or background-location permission.
- Create a task or open an imported one, then add a location.
- Select the correct physical place and enable the location-reminder option.
- Choose arrival, departure, or both if the current interface offers both choices.
- Save the task and test it at a low-stakes location before relying on it for an important errand.
Do not confuse a location shown as task information with a location-trigger notification. The latter must be explicitly enabled.
If the location alert does not fire
Location reminders depend on Android’s background execution, permissions, location detection, and—in the documented Play Store setup—Google Play Services. Check these items in order:

- Confirm the task has an active arrival or departure trigger, not just an address.
- Recheck notification permission and precise-location permission.
- Recheck background-location access.
- Remove Tasks.org from battery optimization or permit unrestricted background activity.
- Enable the manufacturer’s auto-start or background-running setting if your phone provides one.
- Make sure Google Play Services is installed and current.
- Confirm the app came from Google Play if you are using the documented location-reminder path.
- Test with Wi-Fi and mobile data enabled.
- Move well outside the geofence and return; the alert may not fire instantly if Android has not detected a meaningful location transition.
- Check whether a work profile, parental control, enterprise policy, or privacy setting blocks background location.
Some users report Tasks.org failures or confusion around location controls, but those reports are anecdotal and do not override the app’s current documentation. Treat location reminders as helpful prompts, not safety-critical or time-critical alerts. Background location can also affect privacy and battery life; review the permissions rather than granting them blindly.

TickTick
TickTick is the better fit if location reminders are only one part of a broader system involving projects, habits, calendars, recurring work, and cross-platform clients. Its official Android help path is to open a task, choose the additional-options menu, select Location, and enable Location Reminder. TickTick also warns that notification permissions and Android background behavior affect alerts. Its current plan eligibility and pricing should be checked on the live service before subscribing; the cited help page verifies the feature, not its price.

Samsung Reminder
Samsung Reminder is worth considering if you own a compatible Galaxy phone and prefer an option integrated with Samsung’s software and account services. It is not a universal Android recommendation: availability and exact location behavior can vary by Galaxy model, region, One UI version, and account configuration.

Google Tasks
Stay with Google Tasks if scheduled reminders, recurring tasks, Calendar visibility, and Google integration are enough. It is the simplest option, but not the right one for “remind me when I get to the store” or “when I leave work.”
Bottom line
Google Keep’s notes are not disappearing, but its location-reminder feature has. Google Tasks preserves date/time task data—not the active arrival or departure behavior. For a free, open-source Android replacement, start with Tasks.org, recreate the geofence explicitly, grant the required background permissions, and test it on your phone. Choose TickTick for a broader commercial suite, Samsung Reminder for a compatible Galaxy device, or Google Tasks if time-based reminders are all you need.
