Google is phasing out Assistant on US Android phones and paired devices in favor of Gemini, with removal reportedly beginning September 4, 2026. The rollout is expected to take several weeks, and it is not a single shutdown across every Google product. Google Home and Nest, Android Auto, cars with Google built-in, and Google TV have separate transitions and conditions.
What “replacing Google Assistant” actually means
Google Assistant is the legacy voice assistant. Gemini is Google’s generative-AI assistant, available as an app and, on supported Android devices, as the primary assistant invoked by “Hey Google,” a gesture, or a device button. Gemini for Home is a separate version for Google Home and Nest speakers and displays. These are related transitions, not one switch that changes every Google device at once.
Google announced its mobile move in March 2025, saying Assistant would be removed from most mobile devices as Gemini took over. In August 2025, it separately announced Gemini for Home for speakers and displays. The September 4, 2026 start date for removing Assistant access on phones, tablets, Wear OS, and paired devices comes from a user notice reported by Tom’s Guide; it is not a publicly posted universal Google deadline. What changes when Gemini is the assistant?
Gemini is designed for conversational, multi-turn requests and generative tasks, rather than only the short, fixed commands associated with the classic Assistant. Google lists support for tasks such as getting answers, checking weather, using Calendar and reminders, navigating with Maps, interacting with Gmail and Drive, asking about YouTube videos, and playing YouTube Music. Gemini Live supports voice conversations, and other Gemini capabilities include research and drafting help. Which functions work depends on the device, account, permissions, and connected apps.
That flexibility comes with trade-offs. Google warns that Gemini can give incorrect answers, and simple requests may take longer than they did with Assistant. Google also acknowledges that some Assistant voice features are not yet available through Gemini. A conversational response is not always as predictable as a command with a clear result, so test the tasks you rely on rather than assuming feature parity.

“Hey Google” is not going away as the wake phrase. On a device upgraded to Gemini, it can invoke Gemini; where Gemini is not yet available, it may still invoke Assistant.
Can you switch back to Assistant?
There is no single answer for every device:
- Android phone: Google’s current Play listing says users can switch back in settings where that option is available. But the reported transition notice says that once Assistant access is removed from an affected device, switching back is no longer possible.
- Google Home: Google says a home that upgrades to Gemini for Home cannot revert to Assistant.
- Other products: Their transition and rollback options depend on the product and rollout; the mobile rule should not be assumed to apply to them.
If you still have the option to switch on your phone and depend on a particular Assistant workflow, test Gemini before changing the default. A switch-back control that exists today may not remain available after Assistant access is removed.

Google Home and Nest have a separate transition
Gemini for Home is the voice-assistant experience for compatible speakers and displays, not simply the Android Gemini app renamed. Google announced early access beginning in October 2025, and its support page lists early access in the United States. Availability depends on the home and device. Google specifies minimum firmware of Cast 3.76 or higher for speakers and Fuchsia 28 or higher for displays. Older devices may support most Gemini for Home functions but not Gemini Live.
Google says basic Gemini for Home functions—including home controls, media playback, alarms, timers, calendars, notes, lists, reminders, and answers—are available without a subscription. Some advanced features require Google Home Premium. Check Google’s Home Premium details for current features and pricing rather than assuming a subscription is needed for basic voice control.

Because Home upgrades cannot be rolled back, check that your devices are compatible and that your important routines and controls work as expected before opting in.

- Update your software: Install current versions of the Google and Gemini apps, Google Home app, Android system software, and Wear OS software.
- Check your default assistant: Confirm whether Gemini is already installed or selected on your phone, and note whether settings still offer a switch back.
- List the tasks you rely on: Test calls and messages, navigation, alarms and timers, Calendar entries, lists and reminders, music playback, smart-home scenes, and Android Auto commands.
- Review access and connected apps: Check permissions and connected-app settings for the Google account you use. Work or school accounts may also be governed by Workspace administrator settings.
- Preserve critical information: Save important lists or document routines you rely on, especially if they are time-sensitive or business-critical. Google says some Assistant preferences and history may be used to help with the transition, but that does not mean all history transfers for every account.
If a command fails, update the apps, confirm the active Google account and connected-app permissions, and check the default-assistant setting. Try a more explicit request, then verify the action directly in the relevant app or on the device. For Android Auto, update Gemini or the Google app before attempting workarounds. For Google Home, check device compatibility and firmware. For urgent or safety-critical tasks, use the underlying app or physical controls rather than relying on an AI-generated answer.

Who should welcome Gemini—and who should be cautious?
Gemini may suit you if you want conversational help, use Google services such as Gmail, Drive, Calendar, YouTube, or Maps, and value research, drafting, summarizing, or more natural-language requests. It may be a poor fit if your priority is fast, repeatable commands, exact automation behavior, complete Assistant feature parity, or avoiding cloud-based AI processing. Drivers who rely on Android Auto calls should test their own setup before depending on it.
You do not need to buy a new phone or speaker just because Assistant is being phased out. Try Gemini on eligible hardware first and check compatibility before replacing a Google Home device. If you compare alternatives, Alexa is aimed strongly at smart-home voice control, Siri fits Apple-centered households, and Bixby is focused on Samsung devices; none is a drop-in replacement for every Google service. For reliability- or privacy-sensitive actions, app, dashboard, watch, and device-native controls may be the better choice.
Bottom line
Google is effectively ending Assistant as the standard assistant on US mobile and paired devices, with removal reportedly beginning September 4, 2026, and rolling out over several weeks. But “Google Assistant is being completely replaced” is too broad: Google Home, cars, Android Auto, Google TV, and other products follow separate schedules and rules. Gemini adds more conversational capabilities, but it does not yet match every Assistant feature—and rollback depends on the device and stage of the transition.
