Google’s first ads in AI Overviews were sponsored shopping placements associated with the generated answer, not advertisements secretly written into its prose. Since the May 2024 announcement, the idea has grown into a broader commercial search experience: AI Overviews and AI Mode can connect answers with product cards, retailers, prices and other shopping information. The central concern is no longer just where an ad sits. It is whether users can tell when an AI recommendation is information, an organic result or a paid placement.
What Google announced in May 2024
At its May 2024 I/O event, Google announced AI Overviews for U.S. Search users. The feature generates a summary near the top of some results pages, with links to supporting webpages. Soon after, Google said it was testing shopping ads for relevant commercial searches. The ads could use existing advertiser campaigns; advertisers did not need to take a special action for that initial placement, according to contemporary reporting on the announcement.
The distinction between the parts of a results page matters. An AI Overview is generated answer text. It may include links to sources. A sponsored shopping unit is an ad, and conventional Search ads may also appear elsewhere on the page. Early examples showed sponsored products beneath or around the answer, rather than an advertiser’s pitch blended into the answer’s sentences. Google later described ads in dedicated slots around AI Overviews. Layouts can vary by query, country, language, device and test, so a screenshot from one search is not a universal template.

Google was putting advertising next to an AI answer and making the answer page more commercial—not necessarily inserting ads into the answer’s prose.
Why put ads next to an AI answer?
Search advertising is central to Google’s business. AI summaries change the traditional results page: if a generated answer satisfies a user without a click to several websites, the user’s attention stays with Google’s interface. For product searches, the next useful step may be comparing options or choosing a retailer. Ads and shopping placements give Google a way to preserve a commercial path on that surface.
That is a business logic, not proof that Google introduced AI Overviews solely to protect ad revenue. But the tension is clear: an answer-first interface can reduce the need to browse, while advertising depends on reaching people as they look for information, services or products. The more Search becomes a place to ask, compare and act, the more valuable it is for Google to keep those steps inside Search.

The reliability question made the timing sensitive
AI Overviews faced public criticism in 2024 after widely shared examples included bizarre or unsafe responses, among them a false pizza suggestion involving glue. Reporting on the incidents noted Google’s response that extreme examples came from uncommon queries and did not represent typical use. Such cases do not establish that every Overview was wrong, or that every ad shown beside one was unsafe. They do explain why the move to monetize the feature drew scrutiny: users were still asking how consistently to trust its answers.

A system might misunderstand what a user needs, describe a product incorrectly, or surface a retailer whose inventory or price has changed. A sponsored item can be plainly labeled and still benefit from proximity to a confident-sounding answer. Users may read the whole module as one recommendation, even when its answer, links and ad were selected by different systems.
From a summary to a shopping interface
Google said in October 2024 that ads in AI Overviews were beginning to reach U.S. users for relevant queries. The company framed them as a way to connect people with products and businesses. It also said it was improving links to supporting webpages; Google’s claims about link changes or resulting traffic are company-reported test results, not independent evidence of an industry-wide effect. By 2025, the commercial direction was broader than a sponsored product below a short summary. Google’s AI Mode announcement described product cards that could include prices, promotions, images, shipping details and local inventory. The feature was tied to the company’s Shopping Graph, which Google said then contained more than 45 billion product listings, with more than 2 billion updated hourly. Those are dated, company-provided figures, not independently audited counts. The announcement described a U.S. Labs experience; it should not be taken to mean every user or market had the same features. Details are in Google’s May 2025 AI Mode update.
AI Mode changes the question from “Is there an ad beside this answer?” to “How are recommendations, product data, retailer choices and paid placements distinguished throughout a conversation?” A user can ask for options within a budget, refine preferences with follow-ups, and move toward a retailer without returning to a conventional list of links. That can save effort. It also puts more of the shopping journey inside Google’s own interface, where the boundary between an answer, a product recommendation and an ad needs to remain understandable.
Not every product card is necessarily paid, and the available evidence does not support saying that ads appear in every AI Mode conversation. Google’s formats and eligibility vary. The important distinction is between the broader integration of commerce into AI-powered Search and a claim that every recommendation is sponsored.
What the change means for users
AI-powered shopping can make discovery quicker: a person may see products, prices and retailers together, ask follow-up questions, and avoid several separate searches. Those conveniences are most useful when the information is current and the user can see why a result appeared.
- Check labels. Look for “Sponsored” or other ad disclosures; do not assume that proximity to an AI answer means a product is an independent recommendation.
- Verify the details. Open the retailer or manufacturer page to confirm price, availability, shipping, specifications and return terms. These can change after a result is generated.
- Compare independently. A convenient product card is a starting point, not proof that it is the best deal or the best fit.
- Use stronger sources for high-stakes decisions. For health, legal, financial or safety matters, consult primary sources or a qualified professional rather than treating an AI Overview or shopping suggestion as authoritative.
These cautions do not imply that sponsored placements are inherently deceptive. They reflect a practical problem: in a conversational interface, a clearly labeled ad can still appear in a context that feels like personalized advice.
What it means for publishers
An AI summary can answer a question without a visit to the website that supplied useful information. Links and citations may help some publishers earn clicks, but being cited is not the same as receiving the traffic, loyalty or revenue that a direct visit can bring. On commercial searches, users may go from a question to a product and retailer without visiting independent reviews or guides.
Google says it has worked to make links to original sources more prominent and that changes increased traffic to supporting websites in testing. That is Google’s account of its own tests, not proof that publishers overall have gained traffic from AI Search. The unresolved issue is how value is shared when a publisher’s work helps form an answer but the user stays in Google’s answer-and-shopping interface. In that environment, visibility may mean being cited, summarized or used as a product source—not necessarily getting the click.

What it means for advertisers
For advertisers, AI-powered Search may offer a chance to reach people while they are actively comparing options. Existing campaigns could be eligible for the original AI Overview placement without a separate campaign action, but that historical detail is not a blanket guarantee for current campaigns. Eligibility and presentation can depend on campaign setup, product, query and market; current shopping experiences may also rely on accurate product data.
The trade-off is control. An advertiser may have less say over the precise conversational context in which a product appears, or how an AI system interprets a user’s need. A generated summary could misstate a product feature, while the advertiser may have limited visibility into which part of a conversational exchange led to a conversion. Product feeds and retailer data can help populate shopping surfaces, but they also make accurate prices and inventory essential.

Google announced new “How this ad was made” disclosures for AI-created or AI-edited advertising in July 2026. That addresses a related transparency issue—how ad creative was produced—but it does not by itself answer whether a particular product recommendation is sponsored, how it was selected, or whether an AI-generated description is accurate. The announcement’s scope should not be mistaken for a universal guarantee that every interface makes every commercial influence equally visible.

The scale—and the open question
Google reported in May 2026 that AI Overviews had more than 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode more than 1 billion. Those are company-reported figures, not independently audited measurements. In July 2026, Google also reported 17% year-over-year growth in Search and Other revenue; that figure does not establish that ads in AI answers caused the growth. Still, the scale claims underline that AI Search is no longer a small interface experiment in Google’s own telling. See Google’s I/O 2026 remarks and its Q2 2026 earnings update.
The development is not simply “Google put ads in a bad chatbot.” It is the transformation of Search into a commercial interface where answers, product discovery, retailer comparison and advertising increasingly occupy the same surface. The test of that interface is whether users can distinguish generated claims from sourced facts, organic recommendations from paid placements, and useful convenience from a sales path shaped by incentives. Labels help, but trust also depends on accuracy, clear separation and the ability to verify a recommendation outside the answer box.
