Android Studio Narwhal’s biggest change is not another code-completion feature. Google is moving Gemini from a chatbot that suggests snippets toward an agent that can plan multi-step work, edit several project files, run Gradle tasks, inspect build and device feedback, and propose fixes for developer approval.
That makes Narwhal a significant AI-assisted development release—but not an autonomous app generator. Developers still need to review diffs, validate architecture, test behavior, check accessibility and security, and decide whether a change belongs in production.
What is Android Studio Narwhal?
Android Studio Narwhal is an Android Studio Feature Drop, not a separate AI product. It combines Gemini-assisted development with broader improvements for Compose, XR, Kotlin, device testing, and Android compatibility.

AI was the headline at Google I/O 2025, but Narwhal also introduced or improved:
- Gemini Agent Mode for multi-step development tasks.
- Natural-language testing through Journeys for Android Studio.
- Version Upgrade Agent concepts for dependency and API migrations.
- Compose UI transformations using natural-language instructions.
- Crash analysis and suggested source fixes through App Quality Insights.
- An embedded XR emulator and Jetpack XR project template.
- Improved Compose previews and navigation.
- K2 Kotlin compiler mode enabled by default.
- 16 KB page-size warnings and APK Analyzer support.
- Android Partner Device Labs through Android Device Streaming.

What changed at Google I/O 2025?
Google presented Android Studio’s direction as a shift from assistive AI to agentic development.
Traditional IDE assistants answer questions, explain code, generate snippets, or suggest a local transformation. Agent Mode is intended to handle a broader task: understand the request, create a plan, work across the repository, use Android Studio tools, run operations, inspect the results, and revise its proposal.
The I/O announcements included:
- Gemini 2.5 Pro integration, including a larger context window when developers use an appropriate API-key setup.
- Agent Mode for multi-file implementation and iterative troubleshooting.
- Journeys for describing user actions and assertions in natural language and running them on local devices.
- Version Upgrade Agent for helping with dependency and API updates.
- Compose UI transformation from natural-language instructions.
- Crash analysis with explanations and, in some cases, suggested source changes.
Not all of these features were equally mature at the keynote. In May 2025, several were previews, Canary features, or available through Studio Labs. Agent Mode was announced for the Narwhal Feature Drop Canary channel on June 23, 2025, initially as experimental. Android Studio Narwhal Feature Drop reached the stable channel on July 31, 2025, bringing Agent Mode to stable Android Studio.

How Agent Mode works
Agent Mode is accessed from the Gemini panel inside Android Studio. A typical workflow is:
- Open a project in a supported recent Android Studio release.
- Click Gemini in the sidebar.
- Select the Agent tab.
- Enter a task in natural language.
- Review the plan and proposed operations.
- Approve, reject, or refine the proposed changes.
- Allow the agent to build, test, or inspect the result where appropriate.
- Review the final diff and validate the application yourself.
For example, a request such as Add dark mode to the app, update the settings screen, build the project, and fix any errors can involve changes to theme files, resources, Compose UI, settings logic, and possibly tests. The important distinction is that Gemini can coordinate those steps instead of returning one isolated code block.

Google’s Agent Mode documentation describes capabilities including reading and writing files, searching the codebase, running Gradle tasks, deploying to a connected device, inspecting screenshots and Logcat, and interacting with a device through adb shell input.
Useful task prompts
Build my project and fix any errors.Extract all hardcoded user-visible strings into strings.xml.Write unit tests for the repository and run the relevant Gradle task.Implement this attached screen using Material 3, then build the project.Find the cause of this crash, propose a fix, and explain the regression risk.Upgrade the AndroidX dependencies and list possible breaking changes before editing.Move this composable into a new file and verify imports and tests.
These prompts describe the kind of work Agent Mode is designed to assist with, not guaranteed outcomes. A successful build does not prove that the implementation is correct.
What Agent Mode can—and cannot—do
Agent Mode can plan and execute a sequence of development operations, but it does not acquire product judgment or ownership of the software. It may produce a compiling implementation that still violates an application’s architecture, lifecycle assumptions, threading model, accessibility requirements, or security policy.
Developers remain responsible for:
- Reviewing every meaningful diff.
- Checking architecture and state management.
- Confirming security and privacy behavior.
- Running meaningful unit, integration, and UI tests.
- Inspecting accessibility, localization, RTL, and large-screen behavior.
- Checking performance, battery use, and startup behavior.
- Validating migrations and dependency changes.
- Checking Google Play policy and release requirements.
Broad prompts can create broad diffs. A request such as “modernize the app” is difficult to review and may trigger unrelated changes. Smaller tasks with explicit boundaries are safer. For build failures, first preserve the original error and ask the agent to diagnose the cause before allowing repeated edits; otherwise, it can enter a cycle of changing code without addressing a Gradle, dependency, or environment problem.
Compose UI development with Gemini
Narwhal adds several AI-assisted Compose workflows. Developers can attach screenshots or project files to prompts, select UI elements in Compose Preview for additional context, and ask Gemini to transform existing UI code.
In the stable Narwhal release, the workflow is:
- Open a Compose Preview.
- Right-click the preview.
- Select Transform UI With Gemini.
- Describe the desired change, such as adjusting spacing or alignment.
- Optionally select specific UI elements for context.
- Review and approve the generated code.
The feature was identified as experimental and available through Studio Labs in the stable release. Availability and labels can change between Android Studio versions.
A screenshot is a visual reference, not a complete product specification. A generated screen may resemble it while missing:
- TalkBack semantics and keyboard navigation.
- Dynamic text sizing and accessibility contrast.
- Localization, pluralization, and RTL layout.
- Loading, empty, error, and offline states.
- State restoration and navigation behavior.
- Responsive behavior on small, large, and foldable screens.
Compose transformation is therefore most useful for accelerating UI iteration, not for replacing design, accessibility, or architecture review.
Journeys: natural-language testing
Journeys for Android Studio lets a developer describe user actions and assertions in natural language, then run those journeys across local physical or virtual devices. Google positioned the feature as a way to simplify repetitive validation of important flows, with detailed results available in the IDE.
Potentially useful cases include smoke tests and critical paths such as signing in, opening a screen, submitting a form, or completing a checkout flow. Repeating those journeys across device configurations could reduce routine manual work.
Journeys do not prove exhaustive coverage. A natural-language scenario can omit negative paths, unusual state transitions, network failures, accessibility behavior, and data-boundary cases. Reliable use also depends on deterministic test data, a stable device state, predictable authentication, and unambiguous assertions.
Teams should retain conventional unit, integration, and UI tests, and define acceptance criteria that explicitly include failure paths rather than relying only on the happy path.

Version Upgrade Agent and crash analysis
Dependency and API upgrades
Version Upgrade Agent was presented as a way to automate repetitive dependency and API migration work. It could help identify updates, change configuration, and assist with related source edits.
“Automated” does not mean risk-free. Upgrades can introduce behavior changes, deprecated APIs, Gradle incompatibilities, version conflicts, or transitive dependency problems. The I/O announcement described Version Upgrade Agent as coming soon rather than as a universally mature feature. Review the dependency graph, build output, release notes, and tests before merging an upgrade.
Crash analysis
Gemini can work with App Quality Insights to explain crash information associated with source code and, in some cases, suggest a source fix. This can shorten the path from a stack trace to a plausible investigation.
A suggested fix is not necessarily the root-cause fix. Crash context may be incomplete, and obfuscation or optimization can complicate diagnosis. A change that suppresses a symptom may be worse than an obvious crash. Reproduce the issue where possible, inspect the surrounding state, test the proposed change, and verify that it does not hide data corruption or a broader lifecycle problem.
Gemini models, context, and account tiers
Gemini in Android Studio is not one uniform product with identical limits for every user. Model availability, context length, rate limits, billing, and data-use terms depend on the selected access route.
The July 2025 Narwhal announcement said that developers bringing a Gemini API key connected to a paid Google Cloud project could use Gemini 2.5 Pro with a full 1-million-token context window at that time. That statement should not be generalized to every free, Google One, or business account.
The current feature comparison distinguishes among:
- Free individual access.
- API-key access billed by token usage.
- Google One AI Pro and AI Ultra access.
- Gemini Code Assist Standard for business.
- Gemini Code Assist Enterprise.
As of the pricing snapshot dated August 16, 2026, the comparison page listed starting prices of $19 per month for Standard and $45 per month for Enterprise. Treat those as dated starting signals, not universal final costs: billing terms, taxes, contracts, regions, and product packaging can change. Privacy is one of the most important differences between Gemini access tiers. The current official comparison table indicates that the free individual tier has data used for AI training: Yes, while API-key, Google One, and business options are marked No in that comparison.
That does not make every paid option interchangeable. Organizations should inspect the current terms for the exact plan, account, region, and administrative configuration. Ask:
- Can prompts, attachments, and repository context be logged?
- Is source code eligible for model training under the selected plan?
- Who controls API-key billing?
- Can the organization enforce context exclusions such as
.aiexcluderules? - What administrative and compliance controls are available?
- Are experimental features approved for the team’s codebase?
Business tiers add enterprise-oriented capabilities listed by Google, including Google Cloud integrations, IP indemnification, and references to controls such as VPC Service Controls and Private Google Access. Security-sensitive organizations should still perform their own vendor and data-flow review before enabling cloud-backed AI on proprietary repositories.

The rest of Narwhal matters too
Reducing Narwhal to an AI release would miss meaningful Android tooling changes. Google also delivered an embedded XR Android Emulator, a Jetpack XR template, and an embedded Layout Inspector for XR development.
Compose developers received preview navigation improvements and a new Compose preview picker. Kotlin projects use K2 compiler mode by default. Android Studio adds warnings and APK Analyzer support related to 16 KB page-size migration, which helps teams prepare applications for newer device requirements. Android Partner Device Labs also expand access to remote physical-device testing through Android Device Streaming.
These changes reinforce the broader picture: Narwhal is an overall development-environment release whose most visible theme was agentic AI.

Students and hobbyists
Narwhal is a reasonable way to try AI-assisted Android development, especially for learning Kotlin, Compose, Gradle, and debugging. Use the free option cautiously, understand its data-use terms, and do not paste secrets or sensitive source into prompts.
Individual and freelance developers
Agent Mode can be valuable for bounded maintenance, test scaffolding, UI iteration, and build troubleshooting. An API key or Google One plan may make sense if the free limits are restrictive, but usage-based API billing and data handling should be part of the decision.
Professional Android teams
It is a stronger fit when the codebase uses Kotlin and Compose, has repeatable maintenance work, and already has code review, CI, device testing, and security practices. Start with narrowly scoped tasks and measure review effort—not just generated code volume.
Enterprise and security-sensitive organizations
Prefer an approved business configuration with clear administrative, privacy, and procurement controls. Establish rules for repository context, generated code review, secrets, regulated data, and experimental features before broad adoption.

Gemini is a weak fit for teams that expect one prompt to create a production-ready application, cannot review multi-file changes, have little automated testing, or require isolated handling of sensitive code while intending to use the free tier. Safety-critical, medical, financial, and security-sensitive behavior requires additional human and automated verification regardless of the selected plan.
The bottom line
Android Studio Narwhal makes Gemini more capable at routine multi-file implementation, debugging, testing assistance, and Compose UI iteration. Agent Mode is the important change: it can plan work, use IDE tools, run operations, and iterate instead of merely returning a code snippet.
But the practical benefit is acceleration, not delegation of responsibility. Narwhal can reduce repetitive development work when prompts are bounded and the project has strong review and testing practices. It cannot replace architecture, product specification, accessibility checks, security analysis, or release judgment.
