On August 28, 2024, Google announced that Imagen 3 image generation would roll out to Gemini users, including people using the free Gemini experience. The headline needed an important qualification: broad access applied to general image generation, while images of people initially remained an early-access feature for Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users in English.
The announcement described a phased rollout over the following days, not an instant worldwide launch. It is also historical context rather than a description of Gemini’s latest image model: Google announced a newer image-generation and editing model, Nano Banana, in August 2025.
What Google announced
Google’s August 28, 2024 update combined two separate announcements:
- Custom Gems: available for Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users.
- Imagen 3: an upgraded image-generation model rolling out across Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Gemini Business, and Gemini Enterprise.
Imagen 3 was integrated into Gemini’s conversational interface. It was not introduced in this announcement as a separate consumer app. Users generated images by asking Gemini to create them in natural language.

Google presented Imagen 3 as an improvement in image quality, prompt adherence, artistic styles, technical performance, and safeguards. Those are Google’s product claims, not independent comparative test results. The announcement also said generated images would use Google’s SynthID watermarking system.

What “all users” actually meant
“All users” referred to broad access to general image generation in Gemini. It did not mean that every image category, account, language, region, or feature was immediately available without restrictions.

Google’s Spanish-language announcement also confirmed the distinction between free general image generation and restricted people generation. The original announcement did not provide a universal country-by-country availability guarantee.
How to create an image in Gemini
Gemini’s labels and controls may have changed since 2024, but the basic workflow was conversational:
- Open the Gemini web app or mobile app.
- Start a new conversation.
- Ask Gemini to create an image.
- Describe the subject, setting, composition, style, lighting, colors, and any desired text.
- Review the result and request changes in a follow-up message.
- Save or share the image using the controls available in the current interface.
A practical prompt structure is:
Create [subject] in [setting], with [composition or action], using [visual style], [lighting and colors], and [aspect or framing details]. Include [exact text] if needed.
For example:
Create a whimsical claymation-style illustration of a small dragon hatching in a sunlit meadow, with glowing butterflies, detailed scales, warm afternoon light, and a centered composition.

This is a prompting recommendation, not a required command syntax. Gemini was designed to support conversational revisions, so users could ask it to change the lighting, composition, colors, or other elements rather than starting over.

What could Imagen 3 create?
Google’s examples included photorealistic landscapes, textured oil paintings, claymation-style scenes, decorative illustrations, concept art, posters, cards, and images containing text. Examples shown in the announcement included a dragon, a paper-napkin ball gown, a mountain vista, a rose, and an abstract image with the words “Dream Big.”
These examples were representative rather than a guarantee of perfect results. Generated text can contain spelling and layout errors, and small details such as hands, jewelry, logos, repeated patterns, and facial features should be checked at full size.
Restrictions on people and sensitive content
The 2024 announcement explicitly said Gemini would not support:
- Photorealistic images of identifiable people.
- Depictions of minors.
- Excessively gory, violent, or sexual scenes.
Google also said image generation of people would roll out gradually and initially be limited to selected paid and business users in English. These were the restrictions described in that announcement, not a complete or permanent list of Google’s current policies. Product rules may have changed since then.

A refusal does not necessarily mean the entire image request is impossible. Remove sensitive attributes, avoid identifiable people and minors, and revise the prompt without attempting to bypass Gemini’s safety controls.
Why the Imagen 3 update mattered
Imagen 3 was not Gemini’s first image-generation system. Gemini’s earlier image feature used Imagen 2. In February 2024, Google paused image generation of people after the system produced inaccurate and offensive results. Google said at the time that it was working to improve the feature.
That history explains why the Imagen 3 rollout separated general image generation from people generation and emphasized safeguards. The update represented a new attempt to improve the underlying system, but it did not establish that Imagen 3 would be error-free or accurate for identity-sensitive and historical subjects.

What SynthID does—and does not do
Google said images generated with Imagen 3 used SynthID, a watermarking system intended to help identify content created by Google’s AI systems.
SynthID should not be confused with a visible “AI-generated” label. It is also not proof that every synthetic image on the internet can be detected, and watermarking does not prevent copying, editing, or misuse.

Common problems and practical workarounds
The image-generation option is missing
The feature may not yet have reached an account, region, language, age group, or product edition. The Gemini interface may also have changed. Availability in the 2024 announcement was described as a rollout over several days.

The result contains incorrect text
Ask Gemini for the artwork without text, then add the wording in Canva, Adobe Express, Photoshop, Google Slides, or another design editor. Always proofread generated lettering.
The result does not follow the prompt
Separate the request into subject, action, composition, camera angle, lighting, and style. Revise one element at a time instead of rewriting every part of the prompt.
Characters or faces change between images
The 2024 Imagen 3 workflow should not be treated as a guarantee of strict character continuity. For campaigns requiring the same character across many images, consider a later editing model or a dedicated consistency-focused workflow.
The image looks polished but contains artifacts
Inspect hands, faces, lettering, logos, jewelry, background objects, and repeating patterns at full resolution before publishing.

Gemini’s main advantage was convenience: users could generate and revise images through natural conversation inside an assistant they may already use. That made it suitable for quick illustrations, concept ideas, presentation visuals, and casual marketing drafts.

The right choice depends less on a single sample image than on editing control, privacy, consistency, typography, commercial terms, and whether the user wants a chat assistant or a production editor.
Commercial use, privacy, and API access
Do not assume that an image’s availability means unrestricted commercial rights. Before using an output in advertising, publishing, or client work, check Google’s current terms for the relevant product, account type, and jurisdiction. Also consider rights to uploaded reference images, trademarks, likenesses, and any disclosure requirements.
Uploading personal photos or confidential material requires checking the applicable Gemini account and data settings.

What happened next?
Imagen 3 should not be described as Gemini’s current image model in 2026. In August 2025, Google announced a newer Gemini image-generation and editing model known as Nano Banana, highlighting conversational editing, image blending, transformations, and character consistency.
That later announcement does not change what Google announced in August 2024. It does mean that any article published now should date the Imagen 3 rollout and avoid implying that the current Gemini interface still exposes a model selector labeled Imagen 3.

Google’s August 28, 2024 Imagen 3 update made general image generation broadly available in Gemini, including the free experience. But “all users” never meant unrestricted access: people generation initially required selected paid or business tiers and English, safety restrictions remained, and the rollout was phased. Imagen 3 is now historical context rather than a reliable description of Gemini’s latest image-generation capabilities.
