Google Forms can now use Gemini to create a complete quiz from a prompt or a Google Drive file. The feature can draft questions, answer choices, question types, correct answers, and quiz settings, then let you preview and edit the result before sharing it. Google announced the update on July 30, 2026.
It is a major time-saver for teachers, trainers, HR teams, and event organizers—but it creates a draft, not a ready-to-use high-stakes assessment. Review every question and answer key before respondents see it.
What Google Forms’ new Gemini feature does
The new Help me create capability can generate an entire quiz rather than merely suggesting individual questions. You describe what you want in natural language, optionally point Gemini to source material in Google Drive, and Forms creates a draft.
Google says the feature can work with referenced Google Docs, Slides, and PDFs. A generated quiz may include:

You can preview the result and edit it before adding or using it in your form. The official announcement is available on Google Workspace Updates.
How to create a quiz with Gemini
- Open Google Forms and start a new form or quiz.
- Choose the Help me create Gemini option when it is available.
- Describe the quiz you want to generate.
- Optionally reference a Google Drive file, such as a Doc, Slides presentation, or PDF.
- Preview Gemini’s draft.
- Check the questions, choices, correct answers, point values, and quiz settings.
- Edit or remove weak questions, then insert or retain the quiz.
- Publish or share the completed form.
Google’s announcement confirms this general prompt-and-file workflow, but the exact button position and menu labels can change. Do not assume every account will see the same interface.
Prompts that should produce better quizzes
The more specific the prompt, the easier it is to review the result. Include the audience, number of questions, source boundaries, difficulty, question types, and answer requirements.
Create a 15-question fifth-grade science quiz about the water cycle. Use multiple-choice and checkbox questions, include the correct answer for each question, and keep the reading level appropriate for 10-year-old students.
Create a 20-question employee onboarding quiz using the attached PDF. Test security procedures, acceptable-use rules, and reporting responsibilities. Use four answer choices per question, identify one clearly correct answer, and base every question only on the PDF.
Turn this presentation into a short review quiz for college students. Focus on slides 4 through 18, mix multiple-choice, checkbox, and grid questions, and include a balanced mix of easy, medium, and difficult questions.
Useful instructions to add include:
- “Use only information in the referenced file.”
- “Avoid questions with multiple defensible answers.”
- “Make distractors plausible but clearly incorrect.”
- “Map each question to one of these learning objectives: …”
- “Use plain language for non-native English speakers.”
- “Do not test details that are mentioned only in captions, footnotes, or images unless they are essential.”
The important catch: Gemini creates a draft, not a validated exam
AI-generated quizzes still require human review. A question may cover information that is absent from the source, identify the wrong answer, or contain two answers that could reasonably be defended.

- Answer-key accuracy: Confirm every correct answer against the source or your own authoritative material.
- Ambiguity: Check whether wording allows more than one answer.
- Source fidelity: Look for facts Gemini added or important details it omitted.
- Difficulty: Make sure the quiz is not dominated by easy factual recall.
- Reading level: Simplify language where appropriate, particularly for younger students.
- Distractors: Remove choices that are obviously wrong or accidentally correct.
- Coverage: Check that the questions match your curriculum, training goals, or learning objectives.
- File interpretation: Pay special attention to tables, diagrams, scanned PDFs, charts, and image-heavy slides.
For high-stakes examinations, certification, compliance, medical, legal, financial, or safety-critical assessments, Gemini should not be the sole author or validator. A subject-matter expert should approve the questions and answer key, and formal assessments may also require psychometric review.
Who can use the feature?
Google’s announcement lists the following availability:

This does not mean that every Google Forms user has access. Google’s rollout began with Rapid Release domains on July 24, 2026, followed by Scheduled Release domains on August 5, 2026. Google said visibility could take up to 15 days, and availability may still depend on account type, organization settings, and regional or administrative restrictions.

What administrators need to check
Google says administrators must have smart features and personalization enabled for users to access Gemini in Workspace applications. The related Google Workspace announcement explains that administrators can manage the default personalization setting in the Admin console.
If a user cannot find the feature, an administrator should check:
- Whether the organization uses an eligible Workspace edition
- Whether smart features and personalization are enabled
- Whether the rollout has reached the organization
- Whether the user is signed in to the correct Workspace account
- Whether organizational AI policies restrict Gemini access
What to do if Gemini is missing
- Confirm that you are using an eligible account rather than a different personal or work account.
- Ask the Workspace administrator to verify the edition and smart-feature settings.
- Check whether the gradual rollout window has reached your domain.
- Refresh Google Forms or reopen the form.
- Try again later rather than assuming the feature has been discontinued.
If it remains unavailable, you can draft questions with another approved AI tool or write them manually and copy them into Forms. That is only a workaround; it does not provide the same native quiz-generation workflow.
How this differs from earlier Google Forms AI tools
Quiz generation is related to, but different from, Google Forms’ earlier Gemini features.

- Ordinary form creation: Gemini can draft a regular form from a prompt or referenced files.
- Question suggestions: Gemini can suggest two to four questions based on existing form content. See Google’s question-suggestions announcement.
- Response summaries: Gemini can summarize short-answer and paragraph responses.
- Theme analysis: Gemini can categorize text responses into themes and show counts and percentages. Google describes this in its text-response update.
The July 2026 change is specifically significant because Help me create can now generate a quiz with correct answers and quiz settings.
Where the feature is most useful
It is a strong fit when the source material is already in Drive and you need a reviewable first draft quickly. Examples include:
- Turning a lesson document into a classroom review quiz
- Creating an employee onboarding knowledge check
- Converting a policy PDF into an internal training quiz
- Building a study guide from a Slides presentation
- Creating a lightweight knowledge check for an event or workshop
Google Forms remains especially convenient when responses should flow into Google Sheets and the organization already uses Drive, Docs, Classroom, or other Workspace services.

Tally advertises unlimited forms and submissions on its free plan, subject to fair-use rules, along with features such as conditional logic, calculations, payments, signatures, and integrations. Jotform is more appropriate for templates, payment collection, signatures, and operational workflows. Typeform is aimed more at branded, presentation-focused experiences. Check each provider’s current pricing and limits before choosing a plan.
Do not upgrade Google Workspace solely for this one feature unless the wider bundle—Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, administration, and other services—justifies the cost for your organization.
Other recent Forms improvements
Google Forms is becoming more automated beyond quiz creation. Recent updates include granular controls over who can respond, automatic closing by date or response count, quantitative Gemini analysis of text-response themes, and expanded header-image options. These changes are useful context, but they do not replace the central benefit of the new quiz feature: turning a prompt or Drive source into an editable assessment draft.
Verdict
Google Forms’ Gemini quiz generation is genuinely useful for producing a first draft quickly, especially when your teaching, training, or reference material already lives in Google Drive. Its value is lower when accuracy, assessment design, advanced workflows, or high-stakes testing matters more than speed.
