Google Docs still has built-in spelling suggestions on desktop. If you see no red underlines, first test a new document with an obvious misspelling, then check the document language and spelling settings. If the problem persists, compare Docs with your browser’s own spell checker and test without extensions before clearing site data.

Run a controlled test first

  1. Create a new blank Google Doc and type qwertyuiopasdfgh in the document body. Wait briefly to see whether Docs marks it with a red underline.
  2. If it is underlined, right-click it to see the correction menu. You can accept a Docs suggestion with Tab; Ctrl+Z on Windows or Cmd+Z on Mac undoes a replacement.
  3. Open the manual spelling checker and see whether it identifies the test word. Depending on your interface, look under Tools → Spelling and grammar or Tools → Proofread.

This test separates a general failure from a word that Docs considers acceptable. A name, acronym, technical term, regional spelling, correctly spelled word, or word in your personal dictionary may not be flagged. Google describes red underlines for spelling suggestions and blue underlines for grammar suggestions; the two kinds of suggestions can fail independently. Google’s Docs spelling and grammar help

If there are no red underlines, check the Docs settings

Turn on spelling suggestions

In the document, open Tools and look for Spelling and grammar or, on some accounts, Proofread. Check that spelling suggestions are enabled, then run the manual checker. Menu names and availability can vary by account, Workspace edition, and staged interface changes, so the older spelling-and-grammar label is not the only possible route.

If only grammar suggestions are missing, check grammar settings separately; absent blue underlines do not by themselves mean spelling is disabled. Google documents the standard checker and its underline behavior in its Docs help page.

Set the document’s language

Choose File → Language and select the language actually used in the document. The document language matters; changing the Google Account display language alone does not set the checker’s language. Google currently lists English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian for spelling and grammar suggestions. It does not establish equivalent suggestion support for every Docs interface language. English variants can also affect which regional spellings are treated as expected. Google Docs language and checker guidance

If only one word or document is affected

Inspect the personal dictionary

Right-click the unflagged word. If the menu offers Add to personal dictionary, that wording indicates it is not yet in the dictionary; if you previously added it, open the personal dictionary from the spelling-and-grammar or Proofread controls and remove it. Docs intentionally stops marking words users add to this list. Names and specialist terms may also be valid words from the checker’s perspective. Google’s instructions for personal dictionaries

Compare with a new document

If the test word is flagged in a new document but not the affected file, check that file’s File → Language setting and any text-specific formatting or accepted terms. Make a copy of the document and test the copy rather than deleting the original. If the failure remains confined to one file, the evidence points to document-specific state rather than a system-wide spell-check failure.

Separate Docs spelling suggestions from browser spell check

Google Docs has its own editor suggestions; Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and other browsers can also provide spell checking in text fields. A red underline inside the Docs canvas is generally Docs’ checker. Corrections in ordinary website fields or a browser context menu may instead come from the browser. Turning browser spell check on or off does not necessarily change Docs’ native suggestions.

  • If Docs works but Gmail or another site does not, investigate that site, browser behavior, and extensions.
  • If Docs, Gmail, and ordinary text fields all fail, look at browser settings, extensions, or managed-device policies.
  • If only Chrome is affected, compare Docs’ own underlines with Chrome’s browser-level behavior before changing settings.

Chrome’s SpellcheckEnabled enterprise policy can force browser spell check on or off; when disabled by policy, a user cannot turn it back on through ordinary settings. The policy applies at the Chrome profile level on ChromeOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Chrome Enterprise SpellcheckEnabled policy

Do not turn on Chrome’s Enhanced spell check just to repair Docs. It is not a required fix for Docs’ native checker, and enhanced checking can involve sending typed text to Google for processing. Consider that data-handling trade-off before enabling it.

Test extensions and the browser profile

Writing assistants such as Grammarly, translation tools, ad blockers, privacy tools, accessibility extensions, dark-mode add-ons, and corporate security extensions can interfere with editor scripts or add their own underlines. An incognito or private-window test is a quick way to distinguish a profile or extension issue from a broader problem, but it may use a different sign-in state and often disables extensions.

  1. Open a private window and sign in to Docs, then repeat the nonsense-word test in a new document.
  2. If it works there, return to the normal profile and temporarily disable extensions, starting with writing, grammar, translation, privacy, and ad-blocking tools.
  3. Re-enable extensions one at a time and retest to identify a conflict. Incognito success alone does not prove which extension caused it.

Grammarly documents website-specific limitations and troubleshooting for its Docs integration; it is a possible source of conflict, not a universal cause. Grammarly’s known website issues

Update or repair the browser

Google Workspace lists the latest Chrome and the current and previous versions of Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge as supported. Google also requires cookies and JavaScript for Workspace. An old or unsupported browser, blocked site scripts, or a managed browser configuration can therefore affect editor features. Google Workspace supported-browser guidance

  1. Update the browser, close and reopen Docs tabs, then repeat the test.
  2. Confirm cookies and JavaScript are allowed for Google Workspace.
  3. Test in another supported browser. If the checker works there, the problem is likely tied to the original browser profile, settings, or policy.
  4. Only after those tests, clear targeted Google Docs/Drive site data, restart the browser, sign in again, and reopen the file.

Clearing site data can sign you out and require offline files or local editor data to resynchronize. It is usually unnecessary to erase all browser history. If the issue follows your account to a different browser or computer, local cached data is less likely to explain it.

When a menu is missing or says Proofread

Some accounts may show Proofread rather than the older spelling-and-grammar command. Google describes Proofread as AI-assisted writing feedback that can extend to conciseness, tone, and style. Access depends on account type, language, Workspace edition, and Google AI/Gemini eligibility; the feature is not a universal replacement of the standard checker. A missing Proofread control does not prove spelling is broken, and its presence does not guarantee that ordinary spelling suggestions are enabled. Google’s Proofread documentation

If neither control appears, inspect the Tools menu for a spelling-and-grammar icon or Proofread, then compare with a personal account or another browser if available. A Google community thread reports missing menu options, but it is not evidence that every account has undergone the same redesign. Google Docs community discussion

For school or work accounts

A managed device or account can differ from a personal one because administrators control browser policies and some editor-related settings. Test the same document in a clean browser profile or, where permitted, a personal account. If only the managed account or device fails, ask the administrator to check browser policies, extensions, and relevant Workspace editor settings; do not try to bypass organization controls. Google documents administrator controls for editors and offline access, but that does not establish that every administrator can specifically disable Docs spelling suggestions. Workspace editor controls · Workspace offline-access controls

If you are using mobile or working offline

The desktop menu paths above are for computer use. In Android and iOS apps, suggestions may depend more on the device keyboard and its autocorrection settings, so test the same document on desktop to distinguish app or keyboard behavior from the document itself. Gboard’s separate Proofread feature is documented for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, in English, in the United States; it is not the same feature as Docs’ desktop checker. Google Gboard Proofread eligibility

Workspace documents offline editor access for Chrome and Edge, with offline limitations in Firefox and Safari. Google does not establish that native spell checking behaves identically online and offline, so reconnect and retest before attributing a missing suggestion to a setting. Workspace browser and offline guidance

Quick symptom guide

Symptom Likely area to investigate First useful test
No red underlines anywhere Docs setting, document language, browser, or extension New document plus deliberate misspelling
Only one word is ignored Personal dictionary or accepted term Right-click the word and inspect the dictionary
Manual checker reports nothing Language, accepted word, or checker state Test nonsense text in a new document
Spelling-and-grammar menu is missing Interface variation or account eligibility Look for Proofread or a checker control
Works in private window Extension or browser profile difference Disable extensions individually
Works in another browser Original browser settings, cache, or policy Update and check that browser’s configuration
Fails only at school or work Managed account or device policy Ask an administrator to compare a clean profile
Mobile only App or keyboard suggestion behavior Compare with desktop Docs

When to escalate the problem

Before contacting an administrator or Google support, note the date, browser and version, operating system, account type, document language, and exact symptom. Record whether the same test succeeds in a new document, private window, alternate supported browser, other account, or another computer. Check Google’s Workspace Status Dashboard for a service incident; do not assume an outage based on a single failing document. If one document alone is affected, test a copy and preserve the original.
