RCS makes texting between iPhone and Android more capable, with higher-quality media, typing indicators, receipts and better group chats. The biggest recent change is cross-platform end-to-end encryption, which began rolling out in beta on May 11, 2026. But these features are conditional: carrier and software support matter, and a green bubble alone does not prove a chat is using RCS—or that it is encrypted.
What Google’s RCS confirmation means
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is a messaging standard, not a single app. On Android, Google Messages is a common RCS client; on iPhone, RCS is handled in Apple’s Messages app. Carriers also play a part, particularly on iPhone, where RCS is a carrier-provided service. So Google’s promotion of RCS features does not mean every Google Messages tool works in Apple Messages, or that every phone and carrier offers the same experience.
Apple added RCS support in iOS 18. RCS conversations with Android users still appear as green bubbles in Messages, like SMS and MMS. The useful distinction is what powers the conversation: RCS can carry richer features over Wi-Fi or cellular data, while SMS/MMS remains the fallback when RCS is unavailable. Which features work between iPhone and Android?
These are capabilities of the cross-platform RCS experience, not a guarantee that every feature will appear in every conversation. Apple says availability varies by region and carrier; Google says participants need RCS enabled for relevant features to work.

Google Messages also offers features such as spam protection, chat customization, Photomoji and other tools. Those are Google Messages features, not a promise that the same controls are available to iPhone users. Likewise, do not assume message editing, deletion, inline replies, custom effects or every advanced group control will work identically across both platforms. The major update: encrypted RCS between iPhone and Android
Apple says end-to-end encrypted RCS began rolling out in beta on May 11, 2026. The rollout is gradual, not a switch that instantly protects every RCS conversation. Apple’s stated requirements include an iPhone running iOS 26.5 or later and a carrier that supports encrypted RCS on iPhone. The Android participant needs the latest Google Messages, with RCS enabled. Apple says the feature is enabled by default as it rolls out; availability still depends on compatibility.

When a conversation is protected, check for a lock icon or an “Encrypted” label. Do not infer encryption from a green bubble, an RCS label, or the fact that messages send over data. If you do not see the indicator, treat the conversation as not confirmed end-to-end encrypted. In a group, every participant must meet the relevant requirements for the conversation to qualify. Apple’s rollout announcement and RCS setup guidance explain the beta and compatibility conditions; Google also details encryption in its Google Messages encryption help.
End-to-end encryption protects message content between compatible devices. The practical check is the conversation’s security indicator—not a general assumption that all RCS is encrypted. If a chat falls back to SMS/MMS, its RCS features and encryption do not carry over.

How to turn on RCS
On iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Messages.
- Tap RCS Messaging and turn it on.
- If available, check the same menu for End-to-End Encryption (Beta).
Activation may take a short time. If the RCS setting is missing, the carrier or region may not support it on that iPhone. Apple’s instructions for turning on RCS cover availability and setup.
On Android with Google Messages
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile photo or account icon.
- Tap Messages settings, then RCS chats.
- Turn on RCS chats and check the connection status.
- Send a test message to someone you know can receive RCS.
Those are the settings labels in Google’s RCS setup FAQ. Menu wording can vary slightly by app version.

How to tell what kind of chat you have
- Check the composer or conversation status. Confirm that it identifies the conversation as RCS rather than SMS/MMS, where the app shows that status.
- Check encryption separately. Look for the lock icon or “Encrypted” label. RCS does not automatically mean encrypted.
- Use a simple test. In a one-to-one RCS chat, check whether typing indicators or receipts work, then send a photo. A missing feature can reflect settings or compatibility rather than prove that RCS is off.
- Remember that green is ambiguous on iPhone. Both RCS and SMS/MMS appear green in Apple Messages.
If RCS or a feature is missing
- Update both devices. Install available iOS updates and update Google Messages. Encrypted cross-platform RCS specifically requires iOS 26.5 or later and the latest Google Messages.
- Check carrier support. RCS availability—and encrypted RCS support in particular—can differ by carrier and region. If the iPhone setting is absent, ask the carrier whether RCS is supported for that device and location.
- Refresh the connection. Toggle RCS off, restart the phone, then turn RCS back on. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
- Confirm the phone number is registered. Check that messaging is active for the phone number you are using, rather than assuming an Apple ID or Google account alone is sufficient.
- Start a new test conversation. An older SMS/MMS thread may not automatically switch after RCS is enabled. Test one-to-one before diagnosing a group.
- Check every group participant. A participant without compatible RCS can affect group capabilities and whether encryption is available.
- Watch for fallback. If the composer says SMS/MMS, do not expect RCS media handling or encryption in that conversation.
There is no universal fix when a carrier or region does not support RCS. Google notes that availability varies, and Apple says the setting may not appear when the service is unavailable. See the Google FAQ and Apple support page.

RCS, iMessage, Signal and WhatsApp: which should you use?
Use RCS when an iPhone–Android group wants to keep using its phones’ default messaging apps and its carriers support the features it needs. It improves the shared baseline without asking everyone to install another app, but its availability and feature set are not fully consistent.

Use iMessage when everyone is on Apple devices and the group relies on Apple-specific features or integration. Apple describes iMessage as its preferred method for conversations between Apple devices; it does not include Android participants in the iMessage conversation.
Consider Signal when a group prioritizes a dedicated privacy-focused service and everyone is willing to use the same app. Consider WhatsApp when a mixed-device or international group already uses it and wants to avoid carrier-specific RCS compatibility. Both alternatives require participants to adopt the service; that extra step is the trade-off for a more consistent app-based experience.
RCS is a useful upgrade to ordinary cross-platform texting, not a universal replacement for dedicated messengers or a merger of Apple Messages and Google Messages. It is most dependable when the chat visibly remains RCS and, for sensitive conversations, explicitly shows that it is encrypted.
