There is no single Chrome key that instantly captures every kind of screenshot. Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I (or F12) on Windows/Linux, or Command+Option+I on Mac. For a visible page, use Device Mode > More options > Capture screenshot. For the entire webpage, choose Capture a full size screenshot. To select a rectangle, open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+P (Mac), then run Capture area screenshot.

Chrome screenshot shortcuts at a glance

What you need Windows/Linux Mac Workflow
Open DevTools Ctrl+Shift+I or F12 Command+Option+I Opens DevTools
Open Command Menu Ctrl+Shift+P Command+Shift+P Searches for a capture command; it does not capture by itself
Visible viewport Device Mode > More options > Capture screenshot Captures the page area currently visible in the emulated viewport
Whole webpage Device Mode > More options > Capture a full size screenshot Includes content below the current viewport
Selected rectangle Command Menu > Capture area screenshot Drag over the region to save
One DOM element Elements panel > select node > right-click > Capture node screenshot Captures the selected element

The important distinction is scope: viewport, full page, a manually selected area, or one element. The Command Menu shortcut is a launcher for commands, not a one-step screenshot hotkey.

Capture the visible part of a webpage

Use this when the screenshot should show exactly what is visible in Chrome’s page viewport.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I or F12 on Windows/Linux, or Command+Option+I on Mac.
  2. Turn on Device Mode if it is not already active. The device-shaped toolbar appears above the page preview.
  3. Open Device Mode’s More options menu.
  4. Select Capture screenshot.

Chrome saves the resulting image through its normal download process. This command captures the emulated viewport, not the browser’s tabs, address bar, or DevTools panels.

Capture a full-size screenshot of a long page

A normal viewport shot stops at the visible fold. For an “extended screenshot” that includes the rest of a page, keep Device Mode enabled and choose the full-size command.

  1. Open DevTools and enable Device Mode.
  2. Open More options in the Device Mode toolbar.
  3. Choose Capture a full size screenshot.

Chrome captures content outside the current viewport in the page’s full scrollable layout. This is the appropriate workflow for long articles, landing pages, and pages where scrolling would otherwise require several separate images.

When a full-page capture is not the right choice

  • Choose Capture screenshot when you need the exact current viewport for a bug report or visual comparison.
  • Choose Capture area screenshot when only a particular rectangle matters.
  • Choose Capture node screenshot when the target is a specific card, chart, banner, or other DOM element.

Capture a selected area

The area workflow is useful when the desired region does not correspond neatly to one HTML element.

  1. Open DevTools.

  3. Type screenshot in the command search.
  4. Select Capture area screenshot.
  5. Drag across the part of the page you want to save.

Area capture requires DevTools to remain docked to the browser window. If DevTools is undocked, Chrome’s own guidance says this command will not work; dock DevTools and run the command again.

Capture one page element

Use a node screenshot for a single DOM element instead of manually drawing a rectangle.

  1. Open DevTools and select the Elements panel.
  2. Click the node that represents the target element. You can use the element picker if finding it in the markup is difficult.
  3. Right-click the selected node.
  4. Choose Capture node screenshot.

Chrome saves the node screenshot to the Downloads folder on Windows and macOS. The result follows the selected element’s rendered bounds, making this method useful for isolated components such as product cards or navigation blocks.

Troubleshooting Chrome screenshot commands

The screenshot command is missing

Confirm that DevTools is open and Device Mode is enabled for viewport and full-size captures. For an area capture, open the Command Menu inside DevTools and search for screenshot rather than pressing the shortcut and waiting for an automatic capture.

Area capture does nothing

Dock DevTools to the browser window. Chrome documents that area capture does not work while DevTools is undocked. After docking, reopen the Command Menu and choose Capture area screenshot again.

The image is only the visible portion

You selected Capture screenshot, which is the viewport command. Repeat the Device Mode menu and choose Capture a full size screenshot for content below the fold.

The result contains the wrong object

For a single component, return to the Elements panel and verify that the intended node is highlighted before choosing Capture node screenshot. If the target is not a discrete element, use area capture and drag around it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The keyboard combination is intercepted

Some operating-system, keyboard-layout, remote-desktop, or browser extensions can intercept function-key combinations. Open DevTools from Chrome’s menu instead, then use the visible Device Mode and More options controls. The capture commands themselves remain available from those menus.

The page changes while capturing

Wait for the page to finish loading and for animated content to reach the state you want before invoking the command. A full-size capture reflects the page layout at capture time; dynamic ads, rotating banners, or live data can therefore differ between attempts.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output, so you do not need to open DevTools for repeatable captures.

See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The following calls use the documented API endpoint and a placeholder key.

ScreenshotNeo can accept a consent banner before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Beyond the basic call, the service supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and margin controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector hiding, waits for a selector, delay, or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and familiar parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.
