Yes—Google Chrome now has native vertical tabs. Google announced the feature on April 7, 2026, with a new “Show Tabs Vertically” command that moves the tab strip from the top of a desktop browser window to its side. The rollout is progressive, so the option may not appear on every Chrome installation, profile, operating system or release channel yet.

What Chrome’s vertical tabs do

Traditional Chrome tabs run horizontally across the top of the window. Vertical-tab mode places them in a sidebar, where longer page titles remain easier to read and large tab collections are easier to scan. Google says the layout is intended to help people managing double-digit tab counts and tab groups. Google’s announcement describes the feature as moving tabs “to the side” of the browser window.

  • More of each page title can remain visible instead of being compressed into tiny tabs.
  • A vertical list can be easier to scan when many tabs are open.
  • Tab groups can be managed in a larger list rather than a crowded strip.
  • A collapsed sidebar can preserve webpage width, while expansion can reveal titles and controls.

Vertical tabs change the tab strip’s presentation; they do not automatically create workspaces, archive inactive tabs or replace Chrome profiles.

Is vertical tabs officially available in Chrome?

Yes. This is no longer only a Chromium experiment or a rumor. Google announced native vertical tabs on April 7, 2026. That announcement confirms the feature and its menu wording, but it does not promise that every user receives it simultaneously.

#1 Best Overall

Chromium development also shows why reports can appear inconsistent. Engineers added metrics work on July 31, 2025, then continued adding rollout controls, preference handling, persistence, hover expansion, context-menu changes and split-tab behavior. The source defines separate rollout and full-launch controls, so code implementation, early-channel testing, stable-channel availability and availability on your particular installation are different milestones.

There is no evidence in Google’s announcement that the feature is US-exclusive. “US” is therefore a coverage label here, not a documented geographic restriction.

How to turn on vertical tabs

Use Google’s documented desktop path:

  1. Open a Chrome window.
  2. Right-click the Chrome tab area or window tab strip.
  3. Select Show Tabs Vertically.

Chrome should move the tabs from the top of the window to a side panel. The exact width, collapse behavior and other controls can vary while Google completes the rollout.

Do not treat a chrome://flags recipe as the normal stable-channel method. Chromium contains several vertical-tab feature flags, but their names, defaults and availability can change between builds. The supported user-facing control is the context-menu command when it is enabled for your installation.

“Show Tabs Vertically” is missing: what to check

  1. Update Chrome: Open the three-dot menu, choose Help, then About Google Chrome, and allow any update to finish.
  2. Restart the browser: Close and reopen Chrome after updating; a browser restart may be required before a staged feature appears.
  3. Check the rollout status: Google can enable features progressively, so two installations on similar versions may not expose the same command.
  4. Check channel and profile differences: Stable Chrome, Beta, Dev, Canary, separate profiles and different windows can have different feature states.
  5. Verify the platform: Google’s announcement covers Chrome’s desktop browser experience but does not provide a complete Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, Android and iOS compatibility matrix.

If the option remains absent, use a browser with built-in vertical tabs or a tab-management extension rather than changing undocumented flags in a production profile. A later update can also change, pause or withdraw a staged feature.

What is confirmed—and what is still build-dependent

Behavior What the available documentation establishes
Side placement Confirmed: Google says the tabs move from the top to the side of the browser window.
Right-side docking Not confirmed: the announcement does not say that users can choose left or right.
Tab groups Vertical tabs are presented as a way to manage groups more easily, not as a replacement for groups.
Hover expansion Chromium has infrastructure for expanding a collapsed strip on hover; timing and defaults may vary by build.
Width and state persistence Chromium work includes preferences for recently used vertical-tab state and uncollapsed width, but behavior can differ during rollout.
Split tabs Chromium includes fixes for ordering split tabs in the vertical strip; exact presentation should be treated as version-dependent.
Keyboard shortcuts, resizing and pinned-tab behavior Not specified by Google’s announcement; verify them in the Chrome build you use.

Vertical tabs do not replace tab groups

Think of the two features as separate layers. Vertical tabs determine where the tab list appears. Tab groups remain the organizational system for collecting related pages. Google specifically positions the sidebar as making tab-group management easier.

Practical details such as group labels, collapsed-group state after a restart, pinned-tab placement, dragging tabs into groups, incognito behavior and session restoration can vary by release. Chromium commits addressing preference persistence and split-tab ordering show that these interactions require dedicated implementation rather than being automatic consequences of moving the strip.

Why Google took so long

Vertical tabs have been available in competing browsers such as Microsoft Edge, Brave and Vivaldi. Google has not stated a single reason for the delay. The Chromium work indicates that this was more than rotating the existing tab bar: it involved feature-state metrics, staged rollout flags, a state controller, persistence, hover expansion, context-menu text and split-tab ordering. It is reasonable to infer that Google treated the change as a broader tab-strip redesign, but that is an inference from the implementation—not an explanation published by Google.

Chrome compared with other vertical-tab options

Option Vertical-tab approach What to consider
Chrome Native feature rolling out through the browser UI Best integration with Chrome’s own tab strip, but availability and controls can vary during rollout.
Microsoft Edge Native vertical tabs Closest mainstream Chromium comparison; do not assume identical grouping, docking or workspace behavior.
Brave Native vertical-tab support Combines the layout with Brave’s privacy-focused browser approach.
Vivaldi Native vertical tabs with extensive interface customization Worth considering for users who want deeper tab and layout controls.
Firefox Different browser and extension ecosystem A non-Chromium alternative; vertical-tab capabilities depend more heavily on extensions.
Chrome extensions Sidebar-style tab managers Can add advanced behavior before or beyond Chrome’s native feature, but integration and compatibility may be weaker.

“Supports vertical tabs” does not mean these browsers offer the same side, grouping, workspace, shortcut or persistence options.

Advantages and trade-offs

Where the layout helps

  • People who routinely keep dozens of tabs open can identify pages without opening each one.
  • Research and project workflows benefit from a taller list of titles and groups.
  • Ultrawide displays often have spare horizontal space that a sidebar can use.
  • A native implementation should integrate more reliably than an extension that imitates the tab strip.

Where it can be worse

  • The sidebar consumes horizontal webpage space, which can feel cramped on small laptops.
  • Collapsed layouts can hide labels until the pointer reaches the sidebar.
  • Users accustomed to top tabs may need time to adjust.
  • Vertical placement alone does not solve tab overload; tab search, groups, pinned tabs or separate profiles may still be necessary.

Bottom line

Chrome has caught up with native vertical tabs: right-click the tab area and choose Show Tabs Vertically when the feature has reached your installation. Google’s April 7, 2026 announcement confirms the core side-mounted layout, while rollout timing, platform support and advanced behaviors remain build-dependent. If you need mature workspace controls or guaranteed availability today, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi or a suitable extension may still offer a better fit.
