Google launched Circle to Search; Samsung introduced Live Translate. The two features arrived in the Galaxy S24 era as part of a Google–Samsung partnership, but they do different jobs: Circle to Search looks up content on your screen, while Live Translate translates supported phone calls. Neither feature is available on every Android phone, and support for one does not guarantee support for the other.
What launched—and who made it?
On January 17, 2024, Google announced Circle to Search for Android and described its AI partnership with Samsung. Samsung introduced Live Translate as part of Galaxy AI on the Galaxy S24 series. Google’s announcement covered its Search feature and Google technology used in Samsung experiences; it did not make Live Translate a Google-owned product.

Google announced Circle to Search on January 17, 2024, and began rolling it out to the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro and Galaxy S24 series on January 31. The initial rollout was for select premium Android phones, not Android devices universally. Google’s Galaxy S24 announcement explains the partnership, while its Search announcement details Circle to Search. Samsung described Live Translate as a Galaxy AI feature with 13 languages at launch. That was the launch figure, not a guarantee that every language is available on every device or in every region. Samsung’s announcement describes its call-translation experience.

Circle to Search: look up what is on screen
Circle to Search lets you select visible text or imagery and search it without first taking a screenshot or switching apps. On a supported device, open the screen with the content, then long-press the home button or navigation bar. Circle an object, highlight text, scribble over an area, or tap an item; review the Search results and refine the query or ask a follow-up question where available. The precise gesture depends on the phone’s navigation setup.

It can help identify an item in a video, find similar products, explain a term in a post, or look up a place in an image. Google later expanded the experience, including educational help for some math and physics problems and translation-related capabilities. Features and presentation can change over time and vary by device. Google’s Circle to Search guide shows the basic interaction; its May 2024 Android update describes early expansion.
The feature is a shortcut to Search, not a promise that Google can interpret an entire private conversation or identify every image perfectly. A blurry, obscured, stylized, or common-looking object can produce ambiguous results, and text recognition can misread lettering in an image or video. Results also depend on factors such as language, location, and the information available to Search. Shopping results may include advertising: Google said ads would continue to appear in dedicated spaces on results pages.

Live Translate: translate a supported phone call
Samsung’s Live Translate works within the native Samsung Phone app on supported Galaxy devices. During an eligible call, select Live Translate when it is offered and choose the languages for the two speakers. The feature then provides two-way translation, so each person can speak in their own language. Labels and setup steps may differ with One UI version, region, carrier software, and language availability.

Language support is feature-specific: a language available in one Galaxy AI tool may not be available in Live Translate. Network and processing requirements can also vary by feature and device, so do not assume that every call translates offline. Check Samsung’s documentation for the exact phone and software rather than relying on a general Galaxy AI label. Samsung’s Galaxy AI overview treats Live Translate and Circle to Search as distinct experiences.
Compatibility: check each feature separately
Circle to Search has expanded beyond its initial Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24 rollout to additional Pixel and Samsung devices. Samsung’s current U.S. support information describes Circle to Search on select Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or higher. Those software requirements are not a promise that every device meeting them has the feature: model eligibility and availability still matter. Google reported in May 2024 that Circle to Search was available on more than 100 million devices and said it planned to double that reach by the end of the year; that historical milestone was not a complete compatibility list.

Live Translate has a narrower, Samsung-specific history. It launched on the Galaxy S24 series and was later extended as Samsung updated additional Galaxy devices. That does not mean every Galaxy phone, or every phone with other Galaxy AI features, supports call translation. Pixels may support Circle to Search but should not be presented as offering Samsung’s native-call Live Translate feature.
Before relying on either feature, verify the exact model, software version, country, language pair, and—where relevant—carrier or calling setup. Samsung’s support page is a useful starting point for Galaxy feature eligibility, but support can vary by market and change with updates. A browser-based Try Galaxy demo can give a preview, but it cannot establish real-device performance, latency, or compatibility.

If a feature is missing or does not work
Circle to Search will not open
- Confirm the phone model is supported; having Android 14 alone is not enough.
- Check for available system, manufacturer, and Google app updates, then restart the device if appropriate.
- Try a sustained long-press on the home button or navigation bar. The activation control may differ between gesture navigation and button navigation.
- Look in the device’s settings for Circle to Search or its navigation/assistant controls; menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and software version.
- If it opens but finds the wrong thing, select a more distinct part of the image or text. Low resolution, overlays, and visual similarity can make results uncertain.
Live Translate is unavailable or inaccurate
- Confirm that the exact Galaxy model, region, software, Phone app, and selected language pair support it.
- Use the native Samsung Phone app and check the in-call screen for the option; third-party calling apps may not offer the same integration.
- Speak one at a time, clearly and at a moderate pace. Ask the other caller to do the same, especially when audio is noisy.
- For an important exchange, repeat names, numbers, dates, or instructions and confirm their meaning. Use a qualified human interpreter where accuracy is critical.
Privacy and practical limits
These features involve different services and should not be treated as one shared “on-device AI” system. Circle to Search sends a selected screen item into Google Search; the balance of local and remote processing can vary by feature and software version. Samsung’s translation processing requirements can also vary. Consult the current Google and Samsung privacy and feature documentation for the relevant device and setting before sending sensitive content or discussing confidential information. Do not assume that selecting content or translating a call guarantees that all processing stays on the phone.
Should you buy a phone for them?
Start with the feature you actually need. If you mainly want to search objects or text on screen, check whether your current Pixel or Galaxy already supports Circle to Search; it is not exclusive to the S24. If translated phone calls are the reason for considering an upgrade, prioritize a Samsung model for which Samsung confirms Live Translate support in your country and languages.
Then weigh the phone as a whole: price, camera, battery life, performance, software-support period, and whether you are comfortable with the feature’s connectivity and data handling. Do not buy an older or lower-tier Galaxy solely because it advertises Galaxy AI without confirming Live Translate on that exact model. Google Search or Lens and translation apps can offer alternatives, but may require extra steps and do not necessarily reproduce Samsung’s in-call integration. Treat the features as useful extras, not proof that an upgrade is worthwhile for every buyer.

For updates beyond the initial rollout, Google has continued to add functions to Circle to Search; for example, a September 2025 update described continuous “scroll and translate” on select Samsung devices. That illustrates why capability and compatibility claims should be checked against current support information, not inferred from a 2024 launch announcement. Google’s update specifies that selective availability.
