“New Big Search Using AI” is not the verified name of a Google product. The likely reference is Google AI Mode, a conversational experience inside Google Search. It works alongside AI Overviews, which are short AI-generated summaries within ordinary results, and traditional Search, which still provides links, maps, shopping results and other features.
AI Mode can help explore a complex question through follow-ups and synthesized answers, but it can make mistakes. Treat its responses as a starting point, then check the linked sources—especially for decisions involving health, money, law or safety.
What is Google AI Mode?
Google describes AI Mode as its most advanced AI search experience. Rather than returning only a ranked list of pages, it can respond to natural-language questions, support follow-up questions and provide links for further reading. Depending on availability, users can also ask by voice or use images and other inputs.

It is part of Google Search, not a separate product officially called “New Big Search Using AI.” It is also distinct from AI Overviews and from standalone chatbots.

You may be able to move from an AI Overview into AI Mode while carrying over the original query’s context. Google announced on January 27, 2026, that Gemini 3 became the default model for AI Overviews; that is a dated product announcement, not a guarantee that every feature or answer is identical across markets and accounts. How AI Mode builds an answer
For a complicated question, AI Mode can use what Google calls query fan-out: it breaks the request into related subtopics, searches across those areas and then assembles a response. For example, a question about choosing a family-friendly weekend destination might involve travel time, activities, weather and accessibility. The response can offer a useful starting point and links to explore.
That process does not mean a person has checked every claim, or that the sources agree. Google’s explanation of query fan-out describes how the experience works; it is not a promise that every relevant source will be found or that the synthesis will be correct. AI Mode draws on Google Search systems and information sources, which Google has described as including the Knowledge Graph, real-world information and shopping data. How to access and use it
- Open Google Search on the web or in the Google app.
- Look for AI Mode in the Search interface, or visit google.com/ai.
- Ask a question in ordinary language. Include useful constraints such as location, dates, budget or product model.
- Ask follow-ups to narrow or clarify the response. Where supported, use voice or an image as part of the query.
- Open the linked pages before relying on important details.
The interface, eligible languages, account requirements and availability can differ by country, device, age, account type and rollout. A feature appearing for one user does not mean it is available to everyone. Google’s help pages describe current access and limitations: AI Mode help and AI Mode and Search Labs eligibility.
Do not assume a paid subscription is required for every version of AI Mode. Some advanced features and experiments—including certain agentic capabilities or personalization—may be limited by plan, location or eligibility. Check Google’s current documentation and plan details rather than relying on an old feature list.
What it is useful for—and when ordinary Search is better
AI Mode can be useful when a question has several parts and you want to explore the answer conversationally. Examples include learning unfamiliar terminology, comparing options, planning a trip, or identifying several sources and perspectives to read. Google’s May 2026 update also described more prominent links to original content, direct links beside some claims, article suggestions and website previews. Traditional Search may be the better first step when you know the exact site you need, want an official document, need a precise quotation, or are checking a current price, deadline or schedule. A conversational summary can save searches, but opening the original page gives you more control over context and detail.

How reliable are the answers?
AI Mode and AI Overviews can be wrong. Google warns that AI responses may contain mistakes and advises checking important information in more than one place. A link beside a claim is useful evidence to inspect, not proof that the claim is accurate or that the page fully supports it.

Common problems include stale information, confusion between similarly named products or people, combining sources that refer to different dates or jurisdictions, omitting an exception, and drawing a conclusion that the cited page does not support. “It searched the web” does not mean the answer is complete or current.
A quick source-checking routine
- Open the source. Do not rely on the summary’s description of what a page says.
- Check the date and context. Confirm that the information applies to the right country or state, product model, version and time period.
- Match the evidence to the exact claim. A source can be relevant without supporting every sentence in the generated answer.
- Compare another authoritative source. For rules, health information or official procedures, prefer the responsible public authority or qualified organization.
- Look for disagreement and exceptions. If sources conflict, read them directly rather than treating the AI summary as a final verdict.
Use particular care with medical symptoms, diagnoses and treatment; legal rights and deadlines; taxes, investing and insurance; safety instructions; and current political or regulatory information. AI Mode can help you find questions to ask or sources to consult, but it is not a substitute for qualified professional advice or official guidance.
Personalization, privacy and actions
Google has described Personal Intelligence features that can connect AI Mode with services such as Gmail and Google Photos for eligible users in the United States. This is a limited, account-dependent feature, not a universal capability. (Google announcement) Connecting personal information may make some answers more relevant, but it also means the answer can reflect your own messages, photos or preferences rather than neutral general information. Review the permissions and controls Google presents before enabling a connection, and disconnect it if you no longer want it used.

Google has also described agentic Search features for tasks such as finding restaurant reservations, event tickets and beauty or wellness appointments. Access can depend on location, account, plan and experiment status. (Google feature and eligibility details) Before confirming a booking or purchase, verify the provider, date and time zone, quantity, final price, fees and cancellation terms. Do not assume a transaction is complete until the service confirms it.
Can you turn off AI Overviews?
Google’s help documentation says AI Overviews are a core Search feature and cannot be fully turned off through a standard setting. If you want text-based web links, run your search and select the Web filter when it is available. Google’s controls and labels may change, so consult its current AI Overviews help page for the latest instructions.
What AI search means for websites and SEO
AI answers can change how people reach websites. A reader may get enough information without clicking, while another may follow a cited link or continue researching. Effects vary by query and site. Search usage, impressions, click-through rate, referral visits, conversions and revenue are different measures; a change in one does not prove a change in all the others. Google’s reports about increased use of AI features do not establish that every cited publisher gains traffic.

Structured data can help describe content where appropriate, but no tag, prompt or “AI SEO” service can guarantee an AI Mode citation. Use Google Search Console to monitor search visibility and Google Analytics to understand site activity; neither is a placement guarantee.
Is Google AI Mode replacing Search?
There is no basis to say that ordinary Google Search has already been replaced. AI Overviews appear within Search, while AI Mode is a deeper conversational experience alongside the familiar results ecosystem. Google has said that capabilities developed in AI Mode may make their way into the main Search experience, so the interface may continue to evolve. For now, the practical shift is toward Search that can synthesize and converse while still linking to web pages—not an immediate disappearance of links.
Who should use it?
Try AI Mode when you have a broad, multi-part question and want help exploring it. Use ordinary Search when you need a known destination, primary document or exact current detail. Use a chatbot when your task is mainly drafting or working through material you provide. In all cases, verify consequential claims at their original sources. Availability and features change, and neither a paid plan nor a confident generated answer removes the need for judgment.
