Goodnotes, Obsidian, and RemNote are not interchangeable note-taking apps. Goodnotes is a digital notebook for handwriting and document markup; Obsidian is a local, linkable Markdown knowledge base; RemNote is a study system that combines hierarchical notes, flashcards, and spaced repetition.
Choose Goodnotes when writing by hand and annotating PDFs is the main job. Choose Obsidian when you want durable files, backlinks, and a customizable research or writing system. Choose RemNote when the outcome is remembering material through scheduled review. If two outcomes matter equally, a hybrid workflow is often more realistic than forcing one app to do everything.
Quick verdict
| Need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Paper-like handwriting, diagrams, and marked-up worksheets | Goodnotes | Its page-and-notebook model is built around pen input and document annotation. |
| Linked notes, research, writing, and local ownership | Obsidian | Markdown files, backlinks, properties, search, and plugins form an extensible knowledge base. |
| Flashcards, active recall, and exam review | RemNote | Cards and spaced-repetition scheduling are integrated into the note hierarchy. |
| PDF highlights that become study material | RemNote | Reader annotations can be connected to notes and flashcards. |
| Strongest local-file portability | Obsidian | The core app stores user-controlled Markdown files locally. |
| Best visual tablet notebook | Goodnotes | Notebook covers, page templates, pen tools, and freeform layout keep the page central. |
| One-app exam system | RemNote | Notes, PDFs, cards, image occlusion, and review scheduling live together. |
| Handwriting plus long-term text knowledge | Goodnotes + Obsidian | Use the former for capture and the latter for reusable, linked ideas. |
The decisive question is what should happen after you finish taking notes: preserve a polished page (Goodnotes), connect and reuse ideas (Obsidian), or recall the material later (RemNote).

Goodnotes: a digital notebook and document workspace
Goodnotes organizes work as notebooks, pages, folders, and imported documents. Pen, highlighter, shape, image, and selection tools support lecture notes, diagrams, worksheets, and PDF markup. Covers and templates make visual organization easy, and typed text can sit alongside ink.
#1 Best Overall
- A digital notebook for all your writing needs - Replace your stack of notebooks with a single device purpose-built for writing, reading, and thinking. No notifications or social media.
- With AI tools to transform your notes - Convert messy handwriting into readable font, summarize your notes, and change their length and tone with built-in AI notebook tools.
- Feels like pen on paper - See, feel and hear your thoughts meet the page with every stroke of the Premium Pen. No need to set up or charge, just start writing.
- Easily import and mark up documents - Import documents and PDFs using Send to Kindle, and mark them up directly on the page.
- Capture insights as you read – Just start writing on a book's page and Active Canvas will create space for your notes. Expand the margins to add more notes, or collapse them to see the original page.
Handwriting search or conversion, recording, collaboration, and AI capabilities depend on the current platform and plan. Treat handwriting recognition as a convenience rather than a guaranteed transcription system: equations, diagrams, messy writing, and mixed languages can reduce accuracy. Keep the original page before converting it.
Its center of gravity is the document. You can collect many notebooks, but Goodnotes is not primarily a graph of small, recombinable ideas.
Obsidian: local Markdown files connected by links
Obsidian stores notes as Markdown files in a vault on your device. Wikilinks, backlinks, tags, search, daily notes, templates, properties, graph view, themes, and community plugins let you build a system around the files rather than a proprietary notebook tree.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The core app is free without mandatory sign-up. Obsidian says notes are stored locally and that it does not collect telemetry; its optional Sync service uses AES-256 end-to-end encryption. Those statements describe the application and service architecture, not a promise that your own backups are automatically safe.
Obsidian works offline and officially supports macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android. Sync, third-party synchronization, or a self-managed workflow can be added according to your tolerance for setup and maintenance. See Obsidian’s pricing and policy details and official Sync specifications.
RemNote: notes structured for learning
RemNote uses nested “rems,” bidirectional links, and knowledge bases, but its defining feature is that flashcards live inside that hierarchy. Standard cards, cloze-style prompts, image occlusion, and a review scheduler turn source notes into a study queue.
Its Reader can display a PDF beside annotation and notes panes. You can highlight, annotate, create notes, and make cards without leaving the document. RemNote documents AI-assisted summaries, quizzes, and tutoring as plan-dependent features. The Reader is presented as a Pro feature, while free users can try annotation on up to three PDFs: Reader documentation.

| Collaboration | Document sharing and plan-dependent collaboration | Not a core real-time document collaboration product | Sharing and collaboration depend on current plan and client |
Handwriting and stylus work
For a handwriting-first student, Goodnotes is the safest choice. Its page navigation, lasso and drawing tools, templates, and document-centered organization are designed around replacing paper. It is particularly well suited to writing lecture notes directly on slides, solving equations, drawing diagrams, and filling worksheets.

It supports converting handwriting to text, recording sound, importing and editing PDF files, selecting multiple pen brushes, an AI assistant, waking up the XPPen Notes with one click, saving your notes automatically, and you can choose to upload them to OneDrive or Google Drive, and so on. If you upgrade the system to 1PAE, you can enjoy the new AI Notes functions, which include summarizing the PDFs you upload, converting the key points of AI Notes into flashcards, and pressing the quiz function from AI Notes
RemNote is the more compelling alternative when handwriting must feed a review system. RemNote says handwritten notes can be converted into text, flashcards, and quizzes: its handwritten-notes feature page. That connection is valuable for medical and science students, but documented conversion is not evidence that its ink ergonomics equal Goodnotes’ mature notebook experience.
Obsidian should not be selected for native ink alone. A plugin or a companion PDF app may produce a workable hybrid, but that adds configuration and maintenance, and it should not be treated as a first-party handwriting system.
- Choose Goodnotes for freeform diagrams, arrows, equations, and page layout.
- Choose RemNote when handwritten capture must become cards or image-occlusion prompts.
- Use Obsidian with an external ink tool when local Markdown is more important than an all-in-one pen experience.
PDF annotation from import to review
“Supports PDFs” hides several different jobs: viewing, highlighting, freehand ink, text comments, extracting passages, linking annotations, generating cards, searching marks, preserving page references, and exporting a marked-up file.
Goodnotes
Import a slide deck, paper, or worksheet and write on the original page. This is the strongest option when the marked-up document itself is the finished product. The trade-off is that highlights and handwritten observations generally remain tied to that document rather than becoming a network of reusable ideas.
Obsidian
Obsidian is excellent for storing a PDF beside literature notes, citations, tags, and backlinks in a vault. It is not principally a polished PDF-ink application. A companion annotator or plugin can fill that gap, but the exact workflow, mobile behavior, and export fidelity vary and require verification.
RemNote
RemNote’s Reader places the document, annotation tools, notes, and study functions together. Highlights can lead directly to notes and flashcards, which shortens the path from reading to retrieval practice. Free users can annotate up to three PDFs according to the Reader documentation; broader Reader access is presented as Pro.
Flashcards, active recall, and spaced repetition
RemNote is the clear native leader because cards are part of the note structure rather than a separate destination. It documents standard and cloze-style cards, image occlusion, exam scheduling, and the FSRS scheduling algorithm: FSRS documentation. FSRS is an algorithmic scheduling implementation, not a guarantee of better learning; outcomes still depend on card quality and consistent review.
Obsidian can support flashcards through community plugins, Markdown conventions, templates, or external tools such as Anki. This can be powerful, but you must choose and maintain the system, check mobile compatibility, and accept that updates may affect plugins.

- THE ULTIMATE PAPER TABLET – For the first time on a reMarkable paper tablet, you can write, sketch, and read in color. Ultra-slim and portable, but with a full-size 11.8” color display, adjustable reading light, and an unmatched paper-like writing experience.

- ALL YOUR WORK, ORGANIZED – Sort your notes and documents with folders and tags, write directly on PDFs, and instantly convert handwriting to typed text. Everything's in one place and easy to find.
- READ IN COMFORT, DAY OR NIGHT – Unlike most laptops and phones, reMarkable Paper Pro has a low-glare display that reflects natural light, so you can read without eye-strain, even outside. An adjustable reading light means you can keep working when the lights go out, too.
Goodnotes may support study-oriented features on particular plans or platforms, but the supplied product information does not establish a complete equivalent to RemNote’s scheduler, cloze, image-occlusion, and exam-planning workflow. Treat it as a notebook first unless the exact current feature set meets your needs.
- Occasional review of handwritten notes: Goodnotes may be enough.
- Flexible notes with review added later: Obsidian can work, with setup.
- Daily recall and scheduled preparation: RemNote is the natural fit.
- Dedicated flashcard depth outside a note app: evaluate Anki separately at its official site.
Search, linking, and long-term knowledge
Obsidian wins when the unit of value is an idea rather than a page. A paper can link to a literature note, project, person, or draft; backlinks show where an idea is reused; properties and search expose metadata; and the underlying files remain readable outside Obsidian.
RemNote provides links and hierarchy, but the structure is optimized for retrieval and learning. It is a defined system that reduces setup while making review central.

Ownership, export, and lock-in
Obsidian
Obsidian has the strongest portability profile: local Markdown files, offline access, and user choice over backup and synchronization. Official Sync is optional; local files do not remove the need for a backup plan.
RemNote
RemNote exports native format, OPML, Anki, HTML, Markdown, and plain text. Its export documentation warns that a complete native export does not currently include images or PDFs, so preserve those media files separately: export documentation.
Goodnotes
Export pages or notebooks in the formats the current client offers, then open the files without Goodnotes. A PDF can preserve visual layout while losing the relationships that make a knowledge base useful. Verify how your version handles handwriting, typed text, links, audio, shared documents, and cloud backups before making it your only archive.

Sync, platforms, and offline behavior
Cross-device access is not a single badge. Check whether each client can edit or merely view, whether offline changes merge safely, how conflicts are handled, what version history exists, and whether large PDFs or audio consume a storage quota.

Obsidian officially lists Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android. Its Sync service advertises offline work with later synchronization, version history, selective synchronization, and end-to-end encryption: official Sync details. Users who choose another sync method must evaluate that provider’s conflict and privacy behavior themselves.
RemNote advertises synchronized access across devices and handwritten-note support on iPad and other stylus-capable tablets. Feature parity can vary by client, so test the devices you actually use.
Goodnotes’ pricing page advertises cross-device sync on Pro, but platform inclusion and capabilities can differ. Confirm the current list at Goodnotes pricing.
- Do not confuse a backup with synchronization.
- Do not assume a free core app includes free cloud sync.
- Test offline edits on two devices before trusting a workflow with important files.

Best choice by scenario
iPad student taking handwritten lectures
Goodnotes is the default recommendation for writing on slides, diagrams, and worksheets. Pick RemNote instead if a daily review queue is more important than page polish.
Medical or science student
RemNote is attractive for image occlusion, PDF-to-card work, and spaced repetition. Goodnotes remains preferable when complex diagrams and freeform derivations dominate.
Law student
Choose RemNote for case-rule recall and scheduled review; choose Obsidian for a linked case, statute, and writing database; choose Goodnotes for annotated readings and handwritten class materials.

Graduate researcher
Obsidian is usually the strongest base for papers, literature notes, citations, and long-lived writing because files and links remain under your control. Add Goodnotes if handwritten PDF markup is central.
Programmer or technical writer
Obsidian suits code snippets, project notes, Markdown, properties, and automation. RemNote makes sense when learning material must become recurring review.
Lifelong learner
Choose RemNote if you will actually maintain scheduled reviews. Choose Obsidian if durable ownership and open-ended exploration matter more than a queue of due cards.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Visual thinker
Goodnotes leads for ink, spatial page layout, and PDF markup. Pair it with Obsidian only when selected ideas need a reusable text home.
Cheapest viable setup
Obsidian’s free core app is the lowest-cost starting point if you can manage your own backup and synchronization. RemNote Free is viable for basic notes and flashcards within its documented PDF, image-occlusion, and handwriting limits. Goodnotes Free may be restrictive if three notebooks and 100 MB are insufficient.
When a hybrid workflow is worth it
Goodnotes to Obsidian
Capture lectures, diagrams, and marked-up papers in Goodnotes. Move distilled concepts, references, and decisions—not every page—into linked Markdown notes. This preserves the strengths of both apps but requires a deliberate handoff.
Goodnotes to RemNote
Write or annotate in Goodnotes, then turn only exam-relevant facts and diagrams into RemNote cards. This avoids importing an entire notebook into a review queue.
Obsidian to RemNote
Keep research and durable prose in Obsidian, then export or recreate selected prompts in RemNote. Expect duplicated context and a manual boundary unless you build a plugin-based integration.
Two apps become counterproductive when the same source is edited in both, links break after export, subscriptions multiply, or the review queue grows beyond what you will maintain.
Quick Recap
Decision tree
- If handwriting is your daily input and the page is the finished artifact, choose Goodnotes.
- If linked text, local files, and long-term reuse are the priority, choose Obsidian.
- If recall, flashcards, and scheduled review are the intended outcome, choose RemNote.
- If handwriting and durable knowledge are equally important, use Goodnotes with Obsidian.
- If handwritten lectures and systematic exam preparation are equally important, use Goodnotes with RemNote.
- If you combine Obsidian and RemNote, do so knowingly: the flexibility comes with duplicated workflows or integration maintenance.
