Goodnotes is the stronger choice for searchable handwriting, PDF-heavy work, audio-linked notes, collaboration, and a more clearly documented cross-device workflow—if you select a plan with the sync features you need. Kilonotes is the budget-friendly alternative for planners, templates, decorative notes, and study tools such as flashcards. Its low-cost and lifetime options are appealing, but check sync and platform support on your own devices before relying on it as your only notebook.
The best pick depends less on which app has more features than on how you take notes, which devices you use, and whether you need to move a large library between them.

How the apps differ in everyday use
Goodnotes: a searchable document workspace
Goodnotes is built around handwritten notebooks and annotated documents. Its documented tools include search across handwriting, typed text, and PDF text; handwriting-to-text conversion; math conversion; and audio recordings linked to notes. That combination suits students and professionals who need to revisit material by topic, phrase, or lecture rather than just browse pages.
#1 Best Overall
- A digital notebook for all your writing needs - Replace your stack of notebooks with a single device purpose-built for writing, reading, and thinking. No notifications or social media.
- With AI tools to transform your notes - Convert messy handwriting into readable font, summarize your notes, and change their length and tone with built-in AI notebook tools.
- Feels like pen on paper - See, feel and hear your thoughts meet the page with every stroke of the Premium Pen. No need to set up or charge, just start writing.
- Easily import and mark up documents - Import documents and PDFs using Send to Kindle, and mark them up directly on the page.
- Capture insights as you read – Just start writing on a book's page and Active Canvas will create space for your notes. Expand the margins to add more notes, or collapse them to see the original page.
Some advanced capabilities sit behind particular plans. Treat Goodnotes as a family of plan-dependent feature sets, not a single uniform app: Free, Essential, Pro, Special Edition, Teams, and AI Pass do not all provide the same sync, AI, or collaboration access.
Kilonotes: a flexible, study-oriented notebook
Kilonotes emphasizes visual and study-focused tools: custom paper and covers, stickers, decorative writing, freely moving or transforming handwriting, PDF annotation, OCR text extraction, translation, extraction tools, and flashcards. It can be a better match if a notebook is also a planner, journal, or designed study space.
Its advertised recording feature is useful, but the cited listing does not establish a Goodnotes-equivalent workflow for synchronized audio, transcription, and summaries. If those are essential, check the current app version and plan before buying.

Essential adds unlimited files, larger or unlimited imports, watermark-free export, audio recording, and basic AI features. Pro adds broader cross-platform sync, advanced AI, enhanced collaboration, private-link sharing, and meeting-related capabilities. Check the plan details before subscribing, particularly if cloud sync is the reason you are paying.

For a basic cost comparison, Goodnotes Essential at the listed annual rate totals $35.97 over three years before tax; Kilonotes’ listed annual plan totals $29.97 over three years if that price and plan remain available. The listed $19.99 Kilonotes lifetime purchase is less than two years of Goodnotes Essential at the observed rate, but it is not a like-for-like comparison: cloud storage, AI, cross-platform entitlements, and feature access may be separate or different. Do not assume that lifetime access transfers between Apple and Android or includes every future service.

Handwriting: search and flexibility matter more than untested pen-feel claims
Goodnotes has the clearer documented advantage for finding and converting handwriting. Its support information describes handwriting search, handwriting-to-text, spellcheck, and math conversion. Some handwriting sensitivity support is limited to iOS, according to its pricing information. See the Goodnotes FAQ for current details.
Kilonotes highlights freedom to move, scale, and rotate written marks, adjustable brush width and color, eraser sizing, custom paper, and decorative tools. That flexibility can be valuable for visual notes and planners, even though it does not establish the same handwriting-search workflow as Goodnotes.
Neither app should be declared to have objectively smoother or faster ink without comparing the same stylus, device, template, and zoom level. If writing feel is decisive, try both with your own stylus and test stroke latency, palm rejection, pressure response, selection, erasing, and performance on a large document.
PDF annotation and search
Both apps support PDF import and annotation. Goodnotes documents search across PDF text, export, and sharing. Kilonotes advertises global PDF search, outlines, reading modes, translation, extraction tools, and page-number navigation. The feature lists establish that both target PDF workflows; they do not prove equal speed or reliability on a large library or a textbook-sized file.
Before settling on either app for coursework, test one digitally generated PDF and one scanned PDF. Search inside each, navigate its outline, annotate a page, rearrange pages if needed, then export and inspect the result in another PDF viewer. Scanned pages may require text recognition before their printed words can be searched; handwriting recognition, OCR extraction, and search of existing PDF text are separate capabilities.

Goodnotes Free’s 5 MB import cap and watermarked exports can be a practical obstacle for large course files. For either app, verify how your chosen plan handles large PDFs, page-level navigation, and exported annotations before making it the home of an entire term’s materials.
Platforms, synchronization, and backups
Availability is not the same as library synchronization. Goodnotes distinguishes iCloud sync for Apple devices from Goodnotes Cloud, which is intended to sync a library across supported platforms. The company says cross-platform access depends on plan and rollout status: Pro includes full cross-platform access through Goodnotes Cloud, while Essential does not necessarily include it. Special Edition is positioned around the Apple-device experience and operates independently of Goodnotes Cloud. Check the Goodnotes Cloud sync guidance for the current platform and plan conditions.
Kilonotes’ official pages advertise use across iPad, iPhone, Mac, and Android with cloud sync. The App Store listing says Mac compatibility requires macOS 12.5 or later and an Apple Silicon Mac. User reviews on Google Play report sync difficulties for some device combinations and fewer capabilities on Android; those are individual reports, not proof of a universal defect. Treat sync as something to confirm in your own setup rather than assume. See the Kilonotes product page, App Store listing, and Google Play listing.
Run a sync and recovery test before committing
- Confirm the exact app versions, operating systems, and device models you plan to use.
- Check that the selected plan or purchase includes the cloud service you need, and whether the same account restores purchases across the relevant stores.
- Create a small test notebook with handwriting, an imported PDF, an image, and a short audio recording if you use audio.
- Sync it to the second device and verify each content type—not just the notebook title and page text.
- Export the notebook and attachments, then confirm that the files open outside the app and can be restored after reinstalling.
Goodnotes also warns that switching back to iCloud sync after using Goodnotes Cloud prevents switching back to Goodnotes Cloud for six months. Understand that restriction before changing sync systems.
Audio, transcription, and AI
Goodnotes documents recordings linked to handwritten or typed notes, along with transcription and summaries on supported devices and plans. Availability can vary by device, subscription, language, and region. Its transcription guidance distinguishes on-device processing from cloud transcription, so review the audio transcription FAQs if recordings could contain private, medical, legal, or business information. Audio in collaboration links may not be accessible to collaborators.
Kilonotes advertises audio recording while taking notes, but the available listing does not establish equivalent transcription, searchable audio, or cross-device recording behavior. Consider it a recording feature unless the current version confirms the additional workflow you require.

Goodnotes AI is a set of features rather than one entitlement. Basic and advanced tools vary by plan; Pro includes advanced capabilities such as Create mode, image generation, cloud transcription, live meeting summaries, meeting-note generation, and calendar integration. The separate AI Pass is an additional recurring cost and offers higher usage limits and advanced capabilities. Some AI processing may be on-device and some cloud-based; confirm current plan and privacy terms rather than assuming all AI behaves alike.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Kilonotes promotes an AI assistant, organization, knowledge expansion, flashcards, OCR, and translation. Its emphasis is more study-oriented, while Goodnotes’ documented AI offering extends further into meetings, transcription, and document creation. Do not pay for either app’s AI add-on unless its specific tools solve a task you actually have.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Templates, planners, and study tools
Kilonotes is particularly attractive for users who care about the look and structure of their notebooks. Covers, paper styles, journaling layouts, stickers, custom colors, planning books, and decorative writing tools make it a natural fit for planners, digital journaling, scrapbooking, and aesthetic study notes. Flashcards and other study utilities add value for learners who want more than a blank page.
Goodnotes also has templates and marketplace-related content, but Kilonotes makes customization a more central part of its appeal. If you use a single tablet and do not need collaboration or complex cross-device access, that emphasis and its lower observed purchase prices may outweigh Goodnotes’ broader documented ecosystem.
Sharing and collaboration
Goodnotes documents sharing, comments, real-time collaboration on supported plans, private links, and organizational controls. Teams and higher tiers add administration capabilities, with SAML single sign-on and domain controls on higher plans. For group editing, classroom distribution, or managed workplace use, Goodnotes is the safer documented choice. Its Pro, Teams, and Enterprise guide describes the organizational distinctions.

Which app is better for your situation?
Choose Goodnotes if you use an iPad and study from PDFs
Goodnotes is the better fit when you need to annotate a substantial PDF library, search handwritten notes, or connect lecture audio to notes. Check import limits, export rules, and the plan needed for your sync setup before moving a whole course into it.
Choose Kilonotes if templates and price are priorities
Kilonotes suits a budget-conscious student, planner, or journaler who values visual customization, flashcards, and an inexpensive purchase. It is most straightforward when you primarily use one device and can independently back up important work.
For Android-first users, verify the exact workflow
Kilonotes has an Android app, making it a practical candidate for Android-first note-taking. However, platform-specific differences and user-reported sync issues mean you should test the tools and cloud behavior on your own Android device before relying on it. Goodnotes plan and feature availability should likewise be checked for the exact device combination.
For lecture recording, meetings, or teamwork, favor Goodnotes
Goodnotes has the clearer documented path from recording to linked notes, transcription, summaries, and collaboration. Make sure the plan, language, and device support the particular feature you want.
For confidential notes, inspect processing and privacy details
With Goodnotes, check whether transcription is on-device or cloud-processed for your chosen workflow. The Kilonotes App Store privacy disclosure reports possible tracking through usage data and collection of identifiers, usage data, and diagnostics not linked to identity; that statement is specific to the listing and platform. Review each app’s current privacy terms for sensitive recordings or documents.
Should you switch from Goodnotes to Kilonotes?
Do not move a valuable library solely to save on subscription cost until you know what survives the move. The practical question is whether an export preserves the parts you use: page layout, handwriting, PDFs, audio, searchability, folder structure, internal links, tags, and templates. A PDF export may preserve page appearance without retaining every app-specific feature or searchable element.
- Keep your Goodnotes library intact and make an independent export or backup of important notebooks.
- Choose a small representative notebook with handwriting, links, images, and an annotated PDF; include audio if you rely on it.
- Import or recreate that sample in Kilonotes and inspect its pages, attachments, search behavior, and export.
- Test cross-device sync and purchase restoration on the devices you actually use.
- Only move active work after confirming the exported files are readable outside either app and the new workflow covers your needs.
Goodnotes is the stronger all-round option when searchable notes, audio, collaboration, and documented workflows matter. Kilonotes is a credible lower-cost alternative for visual notebooks, planners, and study tools—but make the purchase only after confirming sync, platform support, and backup behavior for your devices.
