There is no universal winner: Samsung Notes is the natural starting point for Galaxy Tab and S Pen owners, Goodnotes is the strongest fit for an iPad-centered notebook and PDF workflow, and Kilonotes stands out for visually organized, handwriting-first study notes. The deciding factors are your devices and the work you need to do—not which app has the longest feature list.
One important caveat: “cross-platform” does not necessarily mean the same features or complete library syncing on every device. Check the limits that affect your workflow before moving a large collection of notes.

Goodnotes: notebook and PDF workflow, with platform differences
Goodnotes combines handwritten notebooks, text documents, whiteboards, imported PDFs and images, audio recording, sharing, collaboration, and AI tools. Its breadth makes it appealing if you want a dedicated notebook system rather than a quick scratchpad.

But Goodnotes is not one identical app across iPad, Android, Windows, and Web. Goodnotes says the Android, Windows, and Web versions do not provide the full Goodnotes 6 feature range available on iPad. It also describes a synchronization limitation: Android and Windows users can access the same account and notes, but notes created on iOS cannot yet sync to Android, Windows, or Web in the same way. If your library starts on an iPad and must remain editable elsewhere, test that specific path before committing.
Goodnotes’ published pricing page, viewed on August 18, 2026, listed Free, Essential at $11.99 per year, Pro at $35.99 per year, Teams at $120 per seat per year, and an AI Pass add-on at $9.99 per month. These are published figures, not guaranteed checkout prices: country, tax, billing cycle, store, and promotions can change what you see. The free tier listed up to three notebooks and 100 MB of storage. Check the live plan comparison for which sync and AI features are included in each tier.
There is also an exit cost to consider. Goodnotes says that after a membership expires, users can still access existing notes but face restrictions including a three-notebook limit, no document sharing, a 5 MB import limit, and watermarked exports. If you might cancel, plan your exports while your account is active.

Kilonotes is oriented toward handwriting-first study and visually organized pages. Its official feature list includes pressure sensitivity and palm rejection, handwriting-to-text conversion, equation recognition, PDF annotation, handwriting search, custom fonts, mind maps and outlines, a Study Page Builder, AI Recap, and audio recording with AI transcription and summaries. That combination may appeal if you want to turn class notes and course PDFs into a customized revision system.

Kilonotes advertises iPad and Android support and cross-device synchronization, including movement between iPad, Mac, and Android. Treat that as a reason to investigate—not proof that every feature, attachment, audio recording, or AI result works identically on each platform. The reviewed product page names Free, Premium, and AI Member tiers but does not provide usable numerical prices. Check the Apple App Store or Google Play listing for your country, and verify which plan includes the features you want. Do not assume AI tools are all part of the free plan or that prices match between stores.
Samsung Notes: strongest inside the Galaxy ecosystem
Samsung Notes supports typed and handwritten notes, images, folders and subfolders, PDF import and annotation, handwriting conversion, and exports in formats including Samsung Notes, PDF, Word, PowerPoint, image, and text. Samsung also documents voice recordings linked with notes, Samsung Cloud synchronization across Galaxy devices, and OneNote integration.
Its key advantage is how it fits Galaxy hardware. Samsung documents S Pen tools for handwriting conversion, straightening, shape cleanup, and selection. That makes Samsung Notes a particularly sensible first choice on a Galaxy Tab if your notes mostly stay on Samsung devices.

Portability is the trade-off. Samsung says its Notes app for PC is optimized for Galaxy Books and may not be compatible with other Windows computers. OneNote integration can make notes available through Microsoft Office, but confirm whether your intended use is viewing or full-fidelity editing; do not assume it replaces a universally compatible notes app. Feature availability can also vary by Galaxy model, One UI or other software version, region, and Samsung account.

Handwriting: the tablet and stylus matter as much as the app
“Best handwriting” is not a single feature. It can mean low-latency strokes, pressure response, reliable palm rejection, comfortable erasing, easy selection and movement, shape correction, conversion to text, or searchable handwriting. These capabilities can vary between devices and platforms.
- Galaxy Tab with S Pen: Samsung Notes is the most directly integrated option. Samsung documents handwriting conversion, straightening, selection, and shape tools for supported devices.
- iPad with Apple Pencil: Goodnotes is a strong notebook choice, but its pricing comparison marks handwriting sensitivity as available only on iOS. Do not assume the Android or Windows writing experience is identical.
- Android or iPad focused on decorated study notes: Kilonotes advertises pressure sensitivity, palm rejection, and handwriting tools. Those are product claims, not evidence of measured superiority across all styluses or devices.
If writing feel is decisive, try each candidate with the stylus you actually own. Write a full page, rest your palm on the display, erase and select a few lines, and convert a short passage to text. A feature list cannot tell you how comfortable that will feel on your hardware.
PDF annotation: markup is not the same as editing the PDF
All three apps are relevant to PDF-heavy work, but distinguish writing on a document from changing the document’s original text. Samsung explicitly says imported PDF text cannot be edited in Samsung Notes; you can add text, drawings, and annotations. If you need to revise the original wording or layout, use a PDF editor designed for that job.

In Samsung Notes, import a PDF by touching and holding Create note and choosing Import PDF. Alternatively, create a note, tap the plus icon, and choose PDF. Select the file and tap Done; add your markup, then tap Back to save. To export, Samsung documents More options → Save as file → PDF file. Samsung notes that page orientation needs to match when inserting a PDF into a note.

Goodnotes identifies PDF import and annotation as core capabilities, while Kilonotes advertises PDF annotation, highlighting, and extraction of key points. For either app, check the version on your device rather than assuming every platform has the same page-management, search, or export tools. Before moving an important course library, try one scanned PDF and one text-based PDF. Check that pages remain in the right order, annotations appear in the exported file, and the result is usable on another device.
Which one suits a student?
- Recording lectures: Samsung supports voice recordings linked with notes. Goodnotes includes audio features, with plan and platform distinctions. Kilonotes advertises recording, AI transcription, and summaries. Check whether your device and plan support the exact recording or transcription workflow you need.
- Annotating slides and textbooks: Samsung is convenient on Galaxy hardware; Goodnotes suits an iPad notebook-and-PDF workflow; Kilonotes places PDFs within a broader visual study workspace. In every case, test a large or scanned document before relying on it for a full course.
- Preparing for exams: Kilonotes’ Study Page Builder, AI Recap, mind maps, outlines, and handwriting search are directly aimed at review. Goodnotes also offers AI tools, but access varies by plan. Samsung’s Note Assist and Galaxy AI functions depend on device and software; some require a Samsung account and an internet connection.
- Making polished or aesthetic pages: Kilonotes has the clearest emphasis on custom fonts, templates, and visual study pages. Goodnotes also supports templates and notebook customization. Samsung Notes offers formatting and organization, but its main appeal is more utilitarian and ecosystem-focused.
AI should be an optional aid, not the only copy of your course material. Keep the original note and source PDF, verify generated summaries against them, and check whether using the feature sends content for online processing. The cited product pages describe features but do not establish every detail of data retention or processing for every tool, plan, and region. Samsung specifically notes that some Note Assist functions require an account and internet connection; its translated PDF overlays have limitations for sync, sharing, saving, and backup/restore in the translated state.

Ask more than “Does it sync?” Before choosing an app, find out whether you can edit the same note on each device, whether handwriting remains editable, and whether audio, templates, images, and AI output travel with it. Also check what happens if you leave the service or cancel.

- Goodnotes: Cross-platform access has meaningful limitations, including the documented iOS-originated sync issue and feature differences outside iPad. Its post-expiry restrictions make advance export important.
- Kilonotes: Cross-device sync is advertised, but confirm your specific devices and content types rather than equating sync with full parity.
- Samsung Notes: Samsung Cloud is a natural fit for Galaxy devices. A Galaxy Book may provide PC access; other Windows computers may not be compatible. OneNote integration is another route for access, but verify the degree of editing you require.
Samsung documents export to several common file formats. PDF is useful for sharing and preserving page appearance, but it may not retain the app’s editable objects, audio relationships, or other app-specific structure. Keep the original editable format as well when available.

A practical backup routine: export important or completed notebooks to PDF; keep editable originals; store copies somewhere independent of the note app; and test reopening or restoring a sample. Before switching, export a sample containing handwriting, images, a PDF, audio, and typed text so you can see what survives.
Cost: compare the limits, not just the advertised price

Goodnotes’ listed prices can vary by country, store, tax, billing cycle, or promotion. Kilonotes’ price should be checked in the relevant store. Samsung Notes may avoid an additional app subscription for a Galaxy owner, but do not infer that every function is available on every Galaxy model.
Recommendations by device and workflow
- Galaxy Tab + S Pen, notes stay in Galaxy: Start with Samsung Notes. Consider another app only if it solves a specific gap, such as a preferred study-page system or cross-platform workflow.
- iPad + Apple Pencil: Start with Goodnotes if you want a conventional notebook and PDF system; compare Kilonotes if templates and visual study tools matter more. Check subscription and syncing terms before building a large library.
- Non-Samsung Android tablet: Compare Goodnotes and Kilonotes on that exact tablet. Goodnotes’ feature set differs from iPad, while Kilonotes’ advertised features still need to be checked against the device and plan you will use.
- Windows laptop plus Android tablet: Goodnotes or Kilonotes may be worth testing, but confirm that the same notes can be edited on both devices. Samsung Notes is a less safe assumption for a non-Galaxy Windows PC.
- iPad and Android in the same workflow: Do not choose based only on a cross-platform label. Test a note created on each device, then test editing and exporting it from the other.
- No budget for a separate app subscription and already own a Galaxy: Samsung Notes is the straightforward first try. Goodnotes’ free tier is limited, and Kilonotes’ current local price and free limits need checking.
Before you commit or switch
- Create a short handwritten note with your own stylus; test palm rejection, selection, erasing, and any handwriting conversion you use.
- Import one text-based PDF and one scanned PDF. Annotate both, then export and inspect the results on another device.
- Record a short lecture-style audio clip and confirm how it relates to your notes and whether that feature is available on your plan.
- Sync the same notebook in both directions across the exact devices you intend to use. Check whether handwriting, images, templates, and attachments remain editable.
- Search for a handwritten word and check whether your required platform and language are supported.
- Export and reopen a sample backup. If you are considering a subscription, review what happens to imports, sharing, and exports after cancellation or expiry.
These checks focus on capabilities and limitations documented by the vendors; they are not a claim that one app has been independently benchmarked for latency, large-PDF performance, recognition accuracy, or export fidelity.
