Goodnotes is the best fit for Apple Pencil notebooks and PDF annotation, Jnotes is the Android-focused choice for handwriting and AI-assisted study, and Standard Notes is the pick for encrypted, text-first notes. They are not direct substitutes: choose by device, note format, and privacy needs—not by counting features.

Goodnotes: strongest when your notes are pages
Goodnotes is built around notebooks and documents. It suits lecture notes, diagrams, planners, worksheets, and PDFs that you want to mark up with a stylus. Its feature page describes searching handwriting, typed text, and PDF text; its plans also list handwriting-related tools and audio capabilities. That makes it a natural starting point for iPad owners who use Apple Pencil as their main input.

Its advantage is not simply that it can store notes: the page is the working surface. You can combine ink and typed material, keep documents together, and annotate imported course files. Check the exact export path for your needs, though. A PDF export is useful for reading and sharing, but should not be assumed to preserve every editable layer, audio recording, link, or notebook-specific feature.
Goodnotes also has a free tier, but it is constrained: the current pricing page lists up to three notebooks/files, 100 MB of storage, a 5 MB import-size limit, and limited tools. The page lists Essential at US$11.99 per year and Pro at US$35.99 per year, with Teams at US$120 per seat per year; it also lists an AI Pass at US$9.99 per month. The US App Store may show different plan labels or purchase options, including a one-time Goodnotes 6 purchase. Goodnotes advertises cross-platform access, but that should not be read as guaranteed feature parity on every device. Its support announcement described cross-platform library sync as rolling out gradually. Verify the current plan, operating-system requirements, sync availability, and import/export behavior for the specific devices you own. The US App Store listing is one place to check current Apple-device requirements and in-app purchases.

Jnotes: an Android study workspace, not a privacy vault
The Android Jnotes app targets stylus-equipped phones and tablets, especially Android tablets and Samsung S Pen workflows. Its Google Play listing describes handwriting, PDF annotation, OCR search, audio recording, templates, backup, and tools for copying, translating, converting, and exporting document content. These are vendor-listed capabilities, not independent measurements of pen latency, OCR accuracy, or performance on every device.
Jnotes’ most distinctive pitch is its set of AI study tools: the company promotes summaries of notes, PDFs, recordings, and other files, along with flashcard and quiz generation and questions over notes or PDFs. Its public materials also describe multimodal input and audio-to-text workflows. Availability may depend on plan, credits, connection, app version, and the type or size of material. Do not infer that an AI-generated summary is accurate, cites every source page, or improves learning outcomes simply because the feature exists. Check answers against the source document, especially for exam material.
The privacy trade-off deserves attention. The Google Play listing‘s developer-provided data-safety section says the app may share location, may collect personal information and device IDs, reports that data is not encrypted, and says data cannot be deleted. Store disclosures are not a security audit and can change, but they are relevant signals for anyone considering sensitive notes. Jnotes also advertises backup, including Google Drive backup; a backup destination is not automatically equivalent to end-to-end encryption that prevents the service provider from reading note contents. Confirm what is backed up, where processing occurs, and what account deletion does before storing confidential material.

The app is primarily distributed and marketed for Android. Its listing identifies phone, tablet, and Chromebook support, but do not assume that every workflow or feature is identical across form factors, or that the web experience mirrors the app. The retrieved public listing confirms in-app purchases but does not establish a dependable current US price. User mentions of a lifetime offer do not verify its present price, platform scope, or future-version entitlement; inspect the in-app purchase screen and terms before buying.

Choose Jnotes if you use an Android tablet with a stylus and want handwriting, PDF study workflows, and built-in AI tools in one app. Avoid treating it as the privacy choice without resolving its current encryption, retention, AI-processing, and deletion terms for yourself.
Standard Notes: encrypted text and long-lived records
Standard Notes is the outlier because its core unit is a text note, not a paper-like page. The service says notes, tags, and related data are protected with XChaCha20-Poly1305 end-to-end encryption. Its free Standard plan includes encrypted sync, offline access, tags, export, two-factor authentication, note passwords, and encrypted email backups. This makes it a more direct fit for journaling, plain-text notes, lists, code, and records you want to access across devices than for handwritten classes or PDF markup. Paid plans add richer note formats and productivity tools. The plan page lists Productivity at US$90 per year, with features such as richer editors, folders, spreadsheets, web clipping, and one-year revision history. Professional is listed at US$120 per year and adds 100 GB of encrypted file storage, family sharing for up to five accounts, offline file access, computer backups, and maximum note history. Plan limits and names can change, so confirm current inclusions before subscribing.

File storage is also not a PDF annotation workspace. Standard Notes may be a strong archive for text and attachments, but it will feel austere if your notes depend on handwriting, diagrams, or page layout. Its feature information lists iOS, Android, web, and macOS support; check the current platform list and sync behavior for your devices.

Which one wins by use case?
- iPad student writing lecture notes by hand: Start with Goodnotes. Its notebook model and handwriting/PDF emphasis match that workflow.
- Android tablet student annotating slides: Start with Jnotes, particularly if you want its advertised OCR and AI study features. Evaluate export, AI quotas, and data practices before committing.
- Student who wants AI-made quizzes: Jnotes puts summaries, flashcards, quizzes, and document questions at the center of its pitch. Goodnotes also offers AI capabilities through its current plan structure and add-ons, but neither feature set proves educational effectiveness.
- Private journal or text archive: Standard Notes is the clearest fit because end-to-end encryption is central to its published plan. Keep periodic exports and test that you can restore them.
- Mixed devices, mostly text: Standard Notes is the most straightforward platform-neutral candidate among these three. For Goodnotes and Jnotes, confirm support and feature parity for each operating system before building your library.
- Highly sensitive information: Standard Notes is the best match of these options based on its stated encryption model. Do not assume app lock, biometrics, or a cloud backup means end-to-end encryption.
Privacy, AI, and control of your data
Several terms that sound reassuring describe different protections:
- App lock or biometrics restrict access when a device is available; they do not by themselves encrypt synced data end to end.
- Cloud backup helps recover data but does not prove that the backup is encrypted so only you can decrypt it.
- End-to-end encryption is a specific data-protection model. Standard Notes advertises it for notes and tags; do not infer that another app offers the same model from words such as “secure” or “private.”
- AI processing raises separate questions: whether content is sent to a cloud service, retained, used for training, or excluded from encryption. The cited Jnotes and Goodnotes feature/pricing pages establish AI availability, not all of these data-handling details. Read the current privacy terms before submitting sensitive material.
For Goodnotes, the cited product sources focus on note features, plans, sync, and AI rather than establishing an equivalent end-to-end-encryption promise. That is not proof of a particular data practice; it means the available evidence here does not justify calling it an encrypted vault. For Jnotes, pair its AI and backup claims with the Google Play data-safety disclosure rather than relying on marketing language alone.
Price is only useful alongside the limits
As of the August 2026 US-facing pricing snapshot, Standard Notes offers a free encrypted text plan; its paid Productivity and Professional plans are listed at US$90 and US$120 annually. Goodnotes’ free plan is substantially limited by file count, import size, and storage, while its listed Essential tier is US$11.99 annually and Pro is US$35.99 annually; AI Pass is separately listed at US$9.99 monthly. Jnotes is free to download with in-app purchases, but a reliable current US price was not exposed in the cited listing.
These prices do not buy equivalent things. Goodnotes charges for a notebook/document workflow, Standard Notes’ paid tiers add encrypted productivity and storage capabilities, and Jnotes’ exact purchase entitlements need checking in the current app. Regional prices, taxes, promotions, storefronts, and plan names can differ or change. Before paying, confirm whether the plan includes the platform sync, file limits, AI access or credits, storage, and export options you actually need.

Test migration and recovery before committing
Each app can make notes readable in some form, but exportability is not the same as a complete, editable migration. A PDF may preserve the appearance of a page while losing audio, notebook structure, editable ink, or search metadata. Text export may preserve words while leaving out attachments, links, or revision history. Before moving a semester’s work or a long-running archive, test a small representative set:
- Export one notebook or text note, including any tags or folder structure you rely on.
- Export one annotated PDF and reopen it in another PDF reader. Check that ink, highlights, page order, and links remain usable.
- Export one audio note, if you use audio, and verify that the recording and any timestamps or transcript are preserved.
- Make a backup, then test restoring it on a second device or clean installation.
- Check whether bulk export is available on your plan and whether exports remain accessible without the original app or subscription.
Standard Notes explicitly advertises plaintext and encrypted export. Goodnotes supports PDF export and sharing paths; Jnotes advertises export and local or Google Drive backup. Those statements do not establish that all three preserve the same structures or that exports are equally portable, so inspect actual files before relying on them.
Bottom line
Pick Goodnotes for an iPad-centered handwritten notebook and PDF workflow, Jnotes for Android stylus note-taking with advertised AI study tools, and Standard Notes for encrypted, text-first notes. If privacy is decisive, Standard Notes is the clearest match in this comparison; if handwriting is decisive, choose between Goodnotes and Jnotes based on your tablet and test a real PDF, export, and sync path before moving your whole library.
