Lightweight, but not freely positionable

Where it could make sense
- Personal warmth near a desk or chair.
- Taking the chill off a small, well-insulated room while someone is present.
- Supplemental heat in a bedroom or office while the primary heating system remains responsible for the home.
Where it is a poor fit
- As the only heat source for a large room, open-plan space, garage, workshop, or poorly insulated room.
- Where drafts, high ceilings, or substantial air leakage quickly carry heat away.
- When you expect a compact 450-watt device to raise a cold room by 15°F or more, or replace central heating.
There is no standardized room test establishing a guaranteed room size or time to reach a target temperature. Results depend on room heat loss, starting temperature, outdoor conditions, insulation, and placement; do not treat a seller’s room-size implication as a promise.
Will it lower your heating bill?
Not automatically. A 450-watt heater uses less electricity per hour than a 1,500-watt heater, but whether it saves money depends on what heating it replaces. Zone heating can help when you occupy one small room, can close its door, and use the heater instead of raising electric-resistance heat for the whole home. It may cost more when added on top of central heat, particularly if the existing system is natural gas or an efficient heat pump.

Safety: what to verify before using it
A claimed timer or overheat cutoff is not a substitute for safe placement or an independently verified safety listing. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says portable heaters were involved in an average of 1,600 fires, 70 deaths, and 150 injuries annually during 2020–2022. - Do not cover the unit or block its air openings. Keep children and pets away.
- Do not leave it operating in an unattended room. Turn it off before sleeping, even if it has a timer or overheat protection.
- Do not use it near water or in a bathroom unless the exact model is explicitly rated and approved for that location. The materials reviewed do not establish such a rating.
- Stop using it if the plug, outlet, cord, housing, or controls are damaged or unusually hot, or if you notice a burning odor. If a breaker trips, do not keep resetting it to run the heater.
