Geoffrey Hinton, the computer scientist widely nicknamed the “Godfather of AI,” says his former girlfriend used ChatGPT to explain why she believed he had behaved badly during their breakup. But the available account does not show that ChatGPT independently caused or decided the relationship’s end.
What Geoffrey Hinton said
In remarks from a September 2025 interview reported as originating with the Financial Times, Hinton said his former girlfriend asked ChatGPT to explain how awful his behavior had been and then shared the chatbot’s explanation with him.
“She got ChatGPT to tell me what a rat I was,” Hinton reportedly said. Entrepreneur and Futurism both reported the remark.

The description does not establish that she sent him an automated, fully AI-written breakup text. The reporting instead describes ChatGPT’s assessment being brought into a breakup conversation.

Did ChatGPT end the relationship?
That claim goes beyond the evidence. What is supported is that:
- Hinton’s relationship ended.
- His former girlfriend used ChatGPT in connection with the breakup.
- She reportedly used it to formulate or explain criticisms of his conduct.
- Hinton did not agree with the chatbot’s characterization.
There is no evidence that ChatGPT originated the decision to separate, persuaded her to leave, or independently evaluated the relationship. The system could only respond to the information she entered, and the full prompt and answer have not been published.
Hinton also reportedly said the experience did not upset him greatly because he disagreed with ChatGPT’s description and had already met someone he liked more. Those comments should be understood as Hinton’s own account, not independently verified facts about the relationship.
What remains unknown
Reports do not identify Hinton’s former girlfriend or say when the breakup happened. September 2025 is the publication date of the anecdote, not necessarily the date of the breakup. The reporting also does not reveal the complete chatbot response.

Who is Geoffrey Hinton?
Hinton is a pioneering computer scientist whose work on artificial neural networks helped lay important foundations for modern deep learning. “Godfather of AI” is a widely used media nickname, not an official title.
He left Google in 2023 and became a prominent public voice warning about the risks posed by increasingly capable AI systems. In 2024, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for work related to machine learning and artificial neural networks. The Guardian covered his departure from Google and his warnings about AI.
Rank #4
Hinton did not create ChatGPT. His research contributed to the broader scientific foundations of modern AI, while ChatGPT was developed later by OpenAI through many lines of research and engineering.

The episode illustrates how chatbots are moving into ordinary, intimate decisions. Someone may use AI to organize emotions, draft difficult language or gain confidence before a confrontation. Presenting the output to another person, however, can make a personal judgment sound like an impartial technological verdict.
A chatbot is not an independent investigator or relationship referee. It sees only the user’s description, may reinforce that person’s framing and can produce confident psychological language without clinical authority. Labels such as “toxic,” “narcissistic” or “awful” should not be treated as proven findings simply because an AI system generated them.

AI assistance is not automatically unethical. It may help someone find calmer wording or articulate concerns they struggle to express. The risks depend on how it is used:
- Confirmation bias: prompting the system to validate a decision already made.
- False objectivity: replacing “I feel” with “ChatGPT says.”
- Context collapse: reducing a complicated conflict to a label or diagnosis.
- Privacy exposure: uploading private messages, sexual information, health details or identifying data.
- Emotional distancing: using the chatbot to avoid responsibility for one’s own words.
- Hallucinated certainty: treating an interpretation as an established fact.
A safer approach is to remove identifying details, use the output only as brainstorming, rewrite it in your own words and take responsibility for the final message. For serious relationship conflicts, a trusted person, licensed therapist or qualified mediator may offer context an AI system cannot. If threats, stalking or coercive control are involved, safety planning should take priority; a face-to-face breakup is not always appropriate.

“Geoffrey Hinton’s girlfriend broke up with him using ChatGPT” is a compressed version of the story. The more precise account is that Hinton said his former girlfriend used ChatGPT to help explain her criticisms during their breakup. The anecdote demonstrates AI’s growing role in personal communication—not that ChatGPT autonomously ended the relationship.
