If GNOME Tweaks has no item literally called Themes in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, first open Tweaks → Appearance: in the GNOME 46 setup, theme controls are generally grouped there. If Appearance is present but its Shell selector is missing or disabled, install and enable the User Themes GNOME Shell extension. A missing Appearance page, by contrast, calls for checking the app and desktop session.
First check Appearance—not for a separate Themes tab
Older guides may tell you to open a Themes section. In Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, which uses the GNOME 46 generation, GNOME Tweaks’ theme-related controls are generally grouped under Appearance. Depending on the installed version and extensions, you may see selectors for applications, icons, cursor, Shell, or legacy applications.
These selectors control different parts of the desktop. Seeing an application or GTK theme selector does not mean the Shell selector must also be available. The Shell selector depends on the User Themes extension.

Ubuntu’s Noble package index lists gnome-tweaks as version 46.0-2 in the Universe repository and identifies extension-management utilities separately. See the Ubuntu 24.04 GNOME Tweaks package page and the Ubuntu GNOME Shell package information. Exact versions can vary with updates.

Install and enable User Themes if Shell is missing
User Themes is a GNOME Shell extension for loading Shell themes from a user directory. It is not a general theme engine: it does not itself provide GTK themes, icon themes, cursor themes, or universal styling for every application. The official GNOME Extensions listing includes support for GNOME Shell 46.
- Install Tweaks and Extension Manager if needed:
sudo apt update sudo apt install gnome-tweaks gnome-shell-extension-manager - Open Extension Manager, select Browse, and search for User Themes.
- Install it, then open the installed extensions list and enable it.
- Close and reopen Tweaks, then check Appearance again.
Extension Manager makes it easy to see whether the extension is installed and enabled, and avoids relying on browser integration. If the selector still does not appear, log out of the GNOME session and back in. This is safer as general advice than using Alt+F2, then r, which is not a universal restart method under Wayland.
If Extension Manager cannot find User Themes, use the official extension page as a fallback and check that the offered version supports your GNOME Shell. Do not assume an APT package with a particular extension name is available in every Ubuntu release or repository. Ubuntu’s package search can help verify what your enabled repositories provide.

A missing Appearance page is different from a missing Shell selector. Check that you are running the expected GNOME session and that Tweaks is installed from Ubuntu’s package repositories. Tweaks’ GNOME Shell controls may not apply if you are using a different desktop environment, such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu, or Ubuntu Unity, or a custom or restricted remote session.

Run these non-destructive checks in a terminal:

gnome-extensions listThe output varies by session and updates. On the standard Ubuntu 24.04 GNOME setup, GNOME Shell is from the 46 generation. If Tweaks is absent or behaves unexpectedly, check package availability and installation:
apt policy gnome-tweaks
apt policy gnome-shell-extension-manager
apt search gnome-shell-extensionIf the packages are available but missing, install them with the command above. If Tweaks is already installed and appears damaged, you can reinstall it with sudo apt install --reinstall gnome-tweaks. Reinstalling does not change a non-GNOME session into GNOME or add a Shell theme selector without the relevant extension.
If your downloaded theme is not listed
A selector can be working correctly while a particular downloaded theme remains absent. Check the theme author’s installation instructions: themes do not all support the same components or use exactly the same directory conventions. A common user-local location is:

mkdir -p ~/.themesAfter extracting the archive, check that the actual theme folder is not nested one level too deep. For example, the intended layout might be ~/.local/share/themes/ThemeName/, not ~/.local/share/themes/ThemeName/ThemeName/. Then close and reopen Tweaks. The expected files vary, but a theme might contain directories such as gtk-3.0/, gtk-4.0/, or gnome-shell/, and sometimes an index.theme file. A GTK-only theme is not necessarily a Shell theme, and a theme without GTK 4 support may not affect GTK 4 applications. Check the theme’s stated GNOME, GTK, and Shell compatibility rather than assuming an older theme works with GNOME 46.
Identify what you are trying to change
- GNOME Shell: The desktop shell’s own interface and shell themes. The User Themes extension is relevant to loading a custom Shell theme.
- GTK 3 applications: Some respond to the application or legacy theme setting in Tweaks, subject to the theme’s support.
- GTK 4 and libadwaita applications: They may not follow a traditional GTK theme selector in the same way. A theme changing some apps but not others is not automatically evidence that Tweaks is broken.
- Icons and cursor: These have their own theme selectors and theme assets; they are not the same as GTK or Shell styling.
- Snap applications: Their theme behavior can differ because of confinement or bundled components, so a system theme change may not affect every Snap in the same way.
Installing User Themes can restore the Shell selector, but it cannot make an incompatible theme work across GTK 3, GTK 4, libadwaita, GNOME Shell, and Snap applications. Avoid random theme PPAs or shell scripts as a first fix: they can introduce incompatible files and make upgrades or diagnosis harder.
If you only want dark mode
You do not need a custom theme or extension just to switch Ubuntu’s standard appearance. Open Settings → Appearance and choose Light or Dark. Ubuntu’s normal Yaru light/dark workflow does not require the separate Yaru Automatic Dark Mode extension; see its GNOME Extensions listing.

Quick diagnosis
- No item named Themes, but Appearance is present: Look under Appearance; the label may differ from older guides.
- Appearance is present, but Shell is missing or disabled: Install and enable User Themes, then reopen Tweaks or log out and back in.
- Appearance itself is missing: Check that you are in a GNOME session and confirm the Ubuntu Tweaks package and version.
- A custom theme is missing from a selector: Check its directory, nesting, component files, and compatibility.
- Only some applications change: Check whether they use GTK 3, GTK 4, libadwaita, or Snap packaging; one theme setting does not control every app uniformly.
- You only need dark mode: Use Settings → Appearance rather than adding extensions.
If you want a more automated or expanded theme-switching setup, User Theme X is a third-party alternative with GNOME Shell 46-compatible versions listed. It adds another extension and maintenance dependency; it is not the default repair for a missing standard Shell selector.
