GM is phasing out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from selected new vehicles, not remotely deleting the features from every existing Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and GMC vehicle. The change began with future electric vehicles and is expanding through GM’s Google-based software strategy. However, some 2026 GM vehicles still advertise wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, so the exact model year, trim, and infotainment system matter.
The short answer
- Existing GM vehicle: If it currently supports CarPlay or Android Auto, there is no evidence of a universal GM update disabling those functions.
- New GM EV: Many newer EVs use Google built-in instead of phone projection, so CarPlay and Android Auto may not be available.
- Future GM vehicles: GM’s next-generation computing platform is planned for both electric and gasoline-powered vehicles, but there is no evidence that every 2026 GM model has already abandoned smartphone projection.
GM’s policy is real, gradual, and model-specific. The headline “GM ends Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support” is therefore directionally true but too broad.
What GM announced and when
March 2023: future EVs move away from phone projection
In 2023, GM said future electric vehicles would replace Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with an infotainment platform built with Google. The company said the goal was deeper integration between infotainment and vehicle systems, including navigation, EV charging, climate controls, and driver-assistance features. GM’s early examples included the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and Cadillac Optiq. Equipment can vary by model, trim, market, and production date, so an individual vehicle’s specifications remain authoritative.

2024–2026: selected vehicles use Google built in
During the following model years, the policy became visible on selected GM vehicles equipped with Google-based infotainment. These vehicles are not simply using a different version of Android Auto; they run a native vehicle system designed to host apps and services inside the car.
October 2025: the strategy expands beyond EVs
On October 22, 2025, GM announced a centralized computing platform intended for both electric and gasoline-powered vehicles. GM said the platform would begin with the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ. This is important because it shows that the long-term software strategy is not limited to EVs. It does not, however, prove that every gasoline-powered GM vehicle sold in 2026 lacks CarPlay or Android Auto.

2026: native apps and AI continue to expand
GM continues to add services to eligible vehicles with Google built in. In June 2026, GM announced access to more than 200 Google Play apps on selected model-year 2024-and-newer vehicles after required software updates. Entertainment apps are generally intended for passengers while the vehicle is parked.
GM also announced a staged rollout of Google Gemini to eligible model-year 2022-and-newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles with Google built in in the United States. This does not mean every GM vehicle has Gemini immediately; eligibility depends on hardware, software, connectivity, accounts, and rollout timing.

Which GM vehicles are affected?
There is no single brand-wide cutoff that can accurately classify every GM vehicle. The safest way to evaluate a vehicle is to check its official equipment list, window sticker, owner’s manual, and infotainment screen.

The 2026 Buick Envista announcement lists wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the featured Preferred trim. Its page showed a $26,495 MSRP, although pricing and equipment can change with destination charges, options, incentives, and later updates.
Conversely, a vehicle advertised with Google built in should not be assumed to support Android Auto simply because both systems use Google technology.

Google built in is not “Android Auto without a cable.” Android Auto projects selected phone apps. Google built in is an Android Automotive-based operating environment installed in the vehicle. A GM vehicle can have Google Maps and Google Assistant—or newer Google AI features—without accepting Android Auto projection.
Bluetooth remains available for calls and audio on many vehicles, but Bluetooth is not a replacement for the full CarPlay or Android Auto interface. It normally does not provide the same app display, navigation controls, messaging integration, or voice workflow.

Why is GM making the change?
GM’s stated reasons include tighter integration between navigation and vehicle functions, native EV route planning, fewer interruptions caused by switching between phone and car systems, a more consistent interface, over-the-air software updates, and a foundation for connected services and future AI features.
There is also a reasonable business inference: controlling the infotainment platform gives GM more influence over accounts, connected services, app distribution, vehicle data, and software features. GM’s shareholder communications emphasize businesses such as OnStar and Super Cruise. That commercial incentive may help explain the strategy, but it would be inaccurate to claim GM officially said CarPlay was removed solely to sell subscriptions.

Not necessarily. OnStar says that on model-year 2025-and-newer vehicles, paid service is not required for Google voice assistance because it is included with OnStar Basics. That statement should not be expanded into “everything is free.”
Depending on the vehicle, service, market, and promotion, separate requirements may apply to:
- cellular connectivity and smartphone data;
- Wi-Fi hotspot service;
- OnStar safety and convenience features;
- third-party app subscriptions;
- vehicle or Google accounts;
- cloud-based voice, navigation, or AI functions.
Trial periods, plan names, and terms can change. Before buying, ask the dealer to demonstrate which features continue after any trial expires and check the exact vehicle’s current OnStar terms and infotainment support information.

What current GM owners should do
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record the model, model year, trim, production date, and infotainment system.
- Check the screen. Look for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto icons in the app launcher or phone menu.
- Read the owner’s manual. The manual and vehicle-specific support page are more reliable than a brand-wide headline.
- Separate support from a pairing failure. Try another compatible phone, a known-good cable where applicable, and the vehicle’s Bluetooth and USB settings.
- Do not assume a Google update will add projection. Native Google built in and phone projection are separate features.
- Do not assume an adapter will create support. Most wireless adapters require factory-wired CarPlay or Android Auto already to exist.
If the vehicle already supports CarPlay or Android Auto, there is no evidence that GM has universally disabled the feature through an ordinary software update. That is not a promise of lifetime support: app availability, cloud services, and software policies can change. It is simply the defensible distinction between a prospective phaseout and a blanket retroactive shutdown.
What Google built in does well
- Native navigation: Google Maps can be integrated into the vehicle rather than projected from a phone.
- EV route planning: The system can be designed to account for charging stops and vehicle range.
- Vehicle commands: Voice controls may interact with climate and other car functions more deeply.
- Native apps: Compatible apps can run in the infotainment system instead of depending on a phone projection session.
- Over-the-air updates: GM can update the platform and add services without replacing the head unit.
- Future software features: A centralized architecture gives GM a foundation for AI and driver-assistance integration.
Selected GM vehicles with Google built in gained access to more than 200 Google Play apps in 2026, subject to eligibility, software updates, connectivity, and parked-use restrictions. Native Apple Music is also available on selected 2025–2026 GM vehicles. That is useful for Apple subscribers, but native Apple Music is not Apple CarPlay; it does not reproduce the full iPhone interface, messaging workflow, navigation choices, or app ecosystem.

Google built in may suit drivers who prefer Google Maps, want native EV charging integration, and are comfortable with vehicle accounts and connected services. It may be a poor fit for someone who specifically wants the familiar iPhone or Android dashboard interface.
- Less phone-platform freedom: You may not be able to bring every preferred navigation, podcast, messaging, or music app to the screen.
- Dependence on GM and Google: Updates, app availability, and long-term support depend on multiple companies.
- Connectivity requirements: Some navigation, voice, AI, and app functions may depend on cellular service or account status.
- Privacy considerations: Connected-car data and account-linked services deserve the same scrutiny as other cloud platforms.
- Resale uncertainty: Buyers who insist on CarPlay or Android Auto may discount a vehicle that lacks them.
- Replacement difficulty: A deeply integrated system may control cameras, climate settings, charging information, alerts, and steering-wheel controls.
Neither platform is universally better. The choice depends on the driver’s phone ecosystem, preferred apps, tolerance for subscriptions, connectivity expectations, and how long the vehicle will be kept.

Can an adapter restore CarPlay or Android Auto?
Usually, no—not if the factory system never supported the feature.

Wireless CarPlay adapters generally convert a vehicle with wired CarPlay into wireless CarPlay. USB Android Auto adapters work on the same basic principle. They do not normally add CarPlay or Android Auto to a GM vehicle that lacks the underlying factory capability.
An aftermarket head unit can be a realistic option for some older, less-integrated GM vehicles. It is much less straightforward for newer EVs and software-defined vehicles, where the factory screen may also manage climate controls, cameras, charging interfaces, safety alerts, steering-wheel controls, and other functions.
Before buying an adapter or head unit, verify compatibility with the exact model and infotainment system, including:

- steering-wheel controls;
- climate and vehicle settings;
- software and warranty implications.
A checklist for new GM buyers
Do not rely on a salesperson’s general statement that a model “has Google” or “supports smartphone connectivity.” Ask for the exact answer to these questions:
- Does this specific model year and trim support Apple CarPlay?
- Does it support Android Auto?
- Are those features wired or wireless?
- Does the vehicle have Google built in, and which services are native?
- What works without a paid OnStar plan?
- What requires cellular connectivity, a data plan, or a third-party subscription?
- Will navigation work offline, and what features require an account?
- Which apps are available in the vehicle’s Google Play catalog?
- What happens when any included trial period ends?
- Can the dealer demonstrate the system using your phone?
Check the vehicle window sticker, official build-and-price page, owner’s manual, and dealer demonstration together. A GM brand-level policy is not enough to determine a particular vehicle’s equipment.
What this means for Apple and Android users
iPhone users
Native Apple Music on selected GM vehicles can preserve access to that service, but it does not provide the broader CarPlay experience. If you rely on Apple Maps, Messages, Podcasts, third-party navigation, or Siri workflows, verify each one individually before purchase.
Android users
Native Google Maps and Google Assistant may be attractive, but Google built in is not identical to Android Auto. Confirm whether your preferred apps are available natively, whether they require connectivity, and whether offline behavior meets your needs.
Bottom line
GM is moving away from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in selected new vehicles, beginning with EVs and extending its future software architecture to gasoline-powered vehicles. It has not ended support everywhere, and current 2026 product material still shows exceptions such as the Buick Envista.
For an existing owner, check the vehicle’s manual and infotainment system rather than assuming the headline applies. For a new-car buyer, treat CarPlay, Android Auto, Google built in, native apps, and OnStar requirements as separate checklist items—and confirm them for the exact model year and trim before signing.
