GlassWire is the easier pick for visual data-usage monitoring and straightforward app blocking; NetGuard is the stronger fit for open-source software and more granular firewall controls. They are separate Android apps, not parts of one product. Both use Android’s local VPN service to filter traffic on the phone, so neither is a remote VPN, antivirus, or complete security suite—and either may conflict with another VPN app.
What GlassWire and NetGuard actually do
GlassWire and NetGuard are Android network-monitoring and app-firewall tools. Their firewall mode routes traffic through a VPN interface created on the device, where the app can allow or block network access. That local VPN connection does not by itself send traffic through a provider’s remote server or hide your public IP. GlassWire describes its Android firewall as a local VPN, and NetGuard says its VPNService traffic is filtered on-device rather than sent to a server (GlassWire Android help; NetGuard on Google Play).
That distinction matters: these apps can help control an app’s network access or show when it uses data, but they do not establish that an app is malicious, remove malware, inspect all encrypted content, patch Android, or provide the IP-masking function of a conventional remote VPN. Android generally allows only one VPN service at a time, so a firewall using VPNService may not run alongside a commercial VPN, VPN-based ad blocker, or some work VPNs.

This is a comparison of documented features, not a hands-on performance or battery test.
GlassWire for Android: best for visibility and data use
GlassWire’s Android strength is making network activity understandable. It offers live and historical per-app data views, mobile-data and Wi-Fi usage monitoring, data-plan alerts, and notifications when a newly installed app accesses the network. Its firewall controls can allow or block apps on mobile data and Wi-Fi, and profiles let you use different rules for different situations. GlassWire’s Android product page and help documentation describe these functions.
That makes GlassWire especially useful if your main question is “Which app is consuming my data?” or you want an approachable way to stop an app using cellular data in the background. It is the less technical choice for someone who wants an overview rather than a detailed investigation of each connection.
GlassWire says its Android app is free and that its app and usage information stays on the device; it also says it does not sell user data. Those are the company’s own statements, not an independent audit. The Android app’s free status should not be confused with the separately priced Windows plans; check the official pricing page for current Windows terms.

Limits: GlassWire is not an antivirus engine or a remote VPN. Its firewall depends on Android’s VPN service, and its data attribution can be affected by system components, manufacturer software, work profiles, secure folders, and cloned-app setups. Do not assume the graph or a block rule will account identically for every device configuration.
NetGuard: best for open-source control and diagnostics
NetGuard is a separate no-root Android firewall maintained by FairCode/Marcel Bokhorst. Its project repository identifies it as GPLv3 open-source software and documents per-app Wi-Fi and mobile-data controls, blacklist and whitelist modes, roaming rules, optional system-app management, access notifications, and per-application/per-address usage recording. Advanced features include address-level rules, logging, and PCAP export. See the NetGuard repository and its FAQ.
NetGuard better suits users who want to reason about rules, inspect access logs, or examine traffic details. The ability to inspect source code is useful transparency, but open source alone does not prove that every downloaded binary is safe or identical to another distribution’s build.

NetGuard’s filtering is not a universal fix for ads or tracking. Results can depend on DNS configuration, encrypted DNS, and how an app makes connections. Nor does a blocked connection prove that the app itself is unsafe.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose GlassWire if you want clear data graphs, usage alerts, and simple per-app controls—especially if mobile data is limited or you want to spot bandwidth-heavy apps.
- Choose NetGuard if open-source software, detailed logs, per-address rules, or the optional GitHub/F-Droid host-file blocking features matter more than a polished monitoring dashboard.
- Choose neither as your only security measure if you need malware detection, phishing protection, public-IP masking, enterprise management, or network-wide household controls. These are different jobs.
- Reconsider either firewall if you must keep a separate VPN or work VPN connected at the same time. Android’s one-VPN-service constraint is a practical blocker, not a feature difference between the two.
- Windows user? GlassWire has a separate Windows network-monitoring product; NetGuard is an Android app and has no equivalent Windows product.
Installing and setting up GlassWire
- Install the official GlassWire Android app from Google Play.
- Grant the Android permissions it requests for data-usage reporting.
- Open the app and use its firewall/shield control to enable the firewall.
- Approve Android’s local VPN request. A VPN or key indicator should appear when the service is active.
- Use the app list to allow or block mobile-data and Wi-Fi access. Set up separate profiles if you need different rules for mobile and Wi-Fi.
- Enable the newly installed app control if you want new apps stopped from accessing the network until you decide.
Names and locations can vary by app version and Android skin. If traffic unexpectedly stops, check for another active VPN, confirm the firewall indicator remains present, and review battery/background restrictions before changing individual app rules.
Installing and setting up NetGuard
- Install the official package from a distribution you trust. The relevant Play Store package is
eu.faircode.netguard; for other builds, use the project’s official links. - Enable the firewall with the switch in the action bar and approve Android’s VPN request.
- Use the Wi-Fi and mobile-data icons alongside each app to allow or deny access for each network type.
- Open Settings → Defaults to choose blacklist or whitelist behavior. Check the default carefully: a whitelist setup can make it seem as though the whole phone has lost internet access.
- If a system component is involved, enable system-app management as needed and review the global access log before adding exceptions.
Menu wording can differ slightly between releases. Use the official FAQ for current troubleshooting details.
Common problems and what to check
The firewall is enabled, but internet access stops
First inspect whether the rules are in whitelist mode or an app was accidentally denied. Also check Android’s “Block connections without VPN” setting if enabled, another VPN profile, custom DNS settings, or a device ROM that handles VPNService incorrectly. Change one setting at a time so you can identify the cause.

The firewall turns off after a while or reboot
Some manufacturers aggressively restrict background services. Allow background activity, remove the firewall app from battery optimization or vendor auto-start restrictions, and confirm the VPN indicator returns after reboot. Android VPN firewalls may have a protection gap during early startup or a service restart; do not assume filtering is continuous until the indicator is back.
An app still seems to connect after being blocked
Traffic may be handled by a system service such as Google Play services, a browser/WebView component, push-notification infrastructure, or another app instance in a work profile or clone. Check the global access log and consider whether the traffic is attributed to a system component rather than the visible app. Blocking essential system services can break other features.
Calls or messages stop working
Some carrier IP calling, Wi-Fi calling, SMS/MMS, voicemail, hotspot, or tethering behavior can depend on services affected by firewall rules. Test ordinary calls, Wi-Fi calling, SMS/MMS, emergency calling, and hotspot use after changing rules. NetGuard documents provider-specific exceptions and a “Disable on call” option; do not permanently block carrier or system components without testing.
You use a work profile, Secure Folder, or cloned apps
NetGuard documents lack of reliable support for apps in Android work profiles, Samsung Secure Folder, and some parallel-app implementations. GlassWire’s usage attribution can also vary in such environments. If these containers are central to your use, verify the exact setup rather than assuming a personal-profile firewall rule covers them.

You rely on Ethernet or USB tethering
NetGuard documents limitations with wired connections and incoming connections to services running on the phone. A no-root VPN firewall is not equivalent to a router firewall or kernel-level packet filter.
Privacy and security: a realistic assessment
Both apps add a useful layer of outbound, app-level network control, but neither protects every layer of a phone. A permitted app may still transmit data; traffic can be associated with shared system components; and the firewall cannot patch vulnerabilities or stop phishing. Keep Android and apps updated, install software from sources you trust, and secure accounts separately.
GlassWire’s privacy statements should be read as vendor claims. NetGuard’s source availability makes its implementation inspectable, but users still need to choose the genuine project distribution and understand Android VPN limitations. Neither should be described as proof that a device is private or malware-free.
Verdict
For most people who want to understand mobile-data use and make simple app blocks, GlassWire is the easier recommendation. For a technically comfortable Android user who values open source and finer-grained rules or diagnostics, NetGuard is the more flexible choice. The more important decision may be whether you can spare Android’s VPN slot: if a remote VPN must stay active, neither local-VPN firewall is a straightforward companion.
