GKN Aerospace’s appearance at Aero India 2013 centered on two specialist technologies: ballistic-tolerant fuel systems and emergency flotation systems. A January 29, 2013 report placed the company in Hall B, Stand 4.15, and described an AW101 helicopter flotation system among its displays. This is a historical account of the 2013 show, not a current exhibitor guide.
What GKN Aerospace showed at Aero India 2013
The January 2013 Indian Defence Review report said GKN Aerospace was exhibiting in Hall B, Stand 4.15. Its presentation highlighted fuel systems and emergency flotation systems rather than a complete aircraft. That focus reflected the role of a systems supplier: components and support capabilities can affect an aircraft’s survivability, safety, weight, endurance and maintainability even when they are not as visible as the platform itself.
The report described the fuel technology as self-sealing and designed to tolerate ballistic damage. It also described an emergency-flotation system shown on a scaled model of the AW101 helicopter. These are distinct technologies addressing different risks: one concerns fuel containment after damage; the other is intended to help an aircraft remain afloat after ditching or water impact.
Self-sealing fuel systems and damage tolerance
A self-sealing fuel system is designed to limit fuel loss if a tank or fuel-containing component is punctured. In the 2013 report, GKN’s military systems were described as intended to seal rapidly after damage from rounds ranging from 7.62 mm to 20 mm. The stated operational aim was to preserve fuel supply and improve the chance that a vehicle could continue its mission after being hit.

Its sturdy design ensures resistance to impact, allowing for reliable performance during fuel sampling. This long-lasting fuel testing jar is an essential tool for pilots and aircraft maintenance professionals, offering long-lasting functionality in various flight conditions.
- Conscious Fuel Testing – Designed for aviation fuel inspection, this testing jar allows pilots to collect fuel samples efficiently. The specialized filtration system effectively separates fuel, water, and debris, ensuring a clear and accurate inspection. The filtered water can be easily disposed of without environmental concerns, making it a responsible choice for flight inspections.
- Pilot-Friendly Design – Engineered specifically for aviation use, this fuel tester features a sturdy pin-type drain for ease of handling. The transparent jar allows for clear visibility, enabling pilots to assess fuel quality instantly. Its advanced separator screen efficiently blocks contaminants while ensuring a smooth flow of clean fuel, making pre-flight inspections simple and effortless.
- Compact and Travel-Ready – Measuring just 2.64 x 2.64 x 6.69 inches and weighing only 2.70 ounce, capacity of 12 oz, this fuel testing jar is lightweight and easy to carry. Its portable size makes it an ideal addition to any pilot’s gear, ensuring convenient fuel sampling wherever needed. Whether in a hangar or on the runway, this tester is a must-have for aviation professionals.
- Reliable Fuel Quality Assessment – This aviation fuel tester provides a clear, visual assessment of fuel purity, helping pilots detect potential contaminants before takeoff. An essential part of pre-flight safety checks, this tool verifies that fuel remains clear of water and debris, giving pilots peace of mind with every flight.
The report also said the systems could be integrated during platform design or fitted externally or as a retrofit. Making use of available space could, according to the report, help increase fuel load or endurance while reducing weight and improving survivability. Those are historical descriptions of the company’s offering, not independently verified performance measurements or current specifications. Actual results would depend on the platform, installation, threat, damage pattern and maintenance condition; “self-sealing” should not be read as a guarantee that every leak or hit will be contained.
There are engineering trade-offs. Protective materials and system layout must fit within a platform’s space and weight limits, while remaining accessible for inspection and repair. Integrating a system early can allow designers to account for it in the aircraft layout; retrofit options may provide another route but still require platform-specific assessment.

Emergency flotation and the AW101 display
The 2013 article said GKN displayed a scaled aircraft model illustrating an emergency-flotation system for the AW101 helicopter. Such systems are intended to help an aircraft or helicopter stay afloat after a water landing or impact, giving occupants more time to evacuate and supporting recovery efforts. They address post-ditching safety, not ballistic protection.
The report connected the AW101 example to an aircraft being procured by the Indian government at the time. That historical reference does not establish that GKN had a contract with the Indian government for the displayed system, that the system was delivered, or that it entered Indian service. A trade-show model demonstrates what was presented; by itself, it is not evidence of a procurement award or operational deployment.

The same report said GKN worked on complete flotation-system programmes covering specification, design, manufacture, qualification and maintenance support, and cited FAR/JAR 27 and 29 requirements. Those are the regulatory references named in the historical report; they should not be taken as a complete statement of current certification status or standards.
Maintenance, repair and lifecycle support
The report described support for GKN’s own products and customer products, including inspection, leak detection and repair, damage repair, and work on nitrile-rubber and polyurethane materials. It also mentioned maintenance of self-sealing and crashworthy fuel cells. These services matter because damage-tolerant systems need inspection and upkeep over their service life, not just installation.

The article does not show that these services were performed in India or under a particular Indian contract. It is best read as a description of capabilities associated with GKN’s businesses at the time, rather than a record of a specific service arrangement at the show.

The 2013 report said GKN Aerospace had more than 35 years of experience working with Indian industry and government at that point. It named Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) as one of GKN’s main customers and referred to a technology-transfer arrangement. The report does not provide enough detail to infer the scope, terms or present status of that arrangement.

Separately, GKN’s corporate material on its Asian industrial footprint refers to a wiring-systems plant announced in Pune and facilities in Asia supplying wiring systems, transparencies and services. This supports the broader point that GKN had an industrial presence in India and the region, but it does not mean the Pune plant or the HAL relationship was announced at Aero India 2013.
Why these systems belonged at Aero India
Aero India is a business and defence-industry exhibition as well as a public air show. Companies use it to present aircraft, components, systems, maintenance services, manufacturing capacity and partnership opportunities. At such an event, a specialist supplier can make its case through technologies that improve platform safety or survivability, or through capabilities relevant to local production and long-term support.
That context also explains why GKN’s reported display did not need to revolve around a complete aircraft. Fuel containment, flotation and repair capabilities address practical lifecycle concerns for operators and manufacturers. For India, relationships with international suppliers can intersect with domestic industrial capability, technology transfer and sustainment. The 2013 report shows those themes in GKN’s presentation, but it does not document a new deal announced at the exhibition.

- It establishes: a reported GKN Aerospace presence at Aero India 2013, the Hall B, Stand 4.15 location, and displays focused on fuel systems and emergency flotation, including an AW101 model.
- It records as company or product claims: the fuel system’s stated ballistic tolerance, the 7.62 mm to 20 mm range, integration and retrofit options, and the described support services.
- It does not establish: GKN’s participation in Aero India 2025 or a later edition; a new Indian contract at the 2013 show; deployment of the displayed AW101 system in India; or current product specifications and certification status.
Aero India 2025 took place on February 10–14, 2025, at Air Force Station Yelahanka in Bengaluru, according to event coverage. That later event context does not verify GKN’s attendance or exhibits at that edition. The evidence about GKN’s stand and products here is specifically from 2013.
