GitHub leads overall for most new teams in 2026, GitLab leads for integrated DevSecOps, and Bitbucket leads when Jira and the Atlassian ecosystem are central to the way a company works. There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on whether your priority is public developer reach, built-in delivery and security, Atlassian integration, self-hosting, or total operating cost.

The short answer

Need Best fit Why
Best overall for most teams GitHub Largest developer ecosystem, strong open-source visibility, broad integrations, GitHub Actions and Copilot.
Integrated DevSecOps GitLab Source control, CI/CD, security, compliance, registries, planning and deployment in one platform.
Jira-centered development Bitbucket Native integration with Jira and the wider Atlassian toolchain.
Public open-source projects GitHub Contributor familiarity, discoverability, discussions and third-party tooling.
Self-managed deployment GitLab Strong cloud, self-managed and dedicated deployment options.

GitHub is primarily a developer collaboration and code-hosting ecosystem that has expanded into automation, security, project management, cloud development environments and AI. GitLab is designed as a unified software-development and DevSecOps platform. Bitbucket is a source-code and CI/CD service whose strongest strategic advantage is its connection to Jira, Confluence, Compass and Atlassian administration.

All three provide Git repository hosting, pull-request or merge-request reviews, branch controls, issue tracking, integrations and automation. Their similarities make migration possible, but their surrounding workflows are not interchangeable.

GitHub: the best default choice for most teams

GitHub is the safest general recommendation when a team wants broad developer familiarity, public visibility and a large ecosystem of integrations. It is particularly strong for startups, open-source maintainers, consultants and companies recruiting developers who already know the platform.

Where GitHub stands out

  • Open source and discovery: GitHub is usually the strongest practical home for public projects because contributors, maintainers and documentation are already concentrated there.
  • Collaboration: Pull requests, reviews, draft changes, branch protection, CODEOWNERS-style ownership and repository discussions are familiar to a large developer population.
  • Automation: GitHub Actions supports YAML workflows, hosted and self-hosted runners, reusable actions, environments, secrets, deployment approvals and marketplace integrations.
  • AI: GitHub Copilot covers code completion and assistance across supported editors, while GitHub is also adding AI capabilities around repository work and development workflows. Copilot availability and governance depend on the selected plan.
  • Security: GitHub offers dependency, secret and code-security capabilities, with more advanced enterprise security functionality handled through higher-tier products or add-ons.
  • Development environments: Codespaces can provide browser-based or cloud-hosted development environments, subject to plan and usage limits.
  • Integrations: Its marketplace and third-party ecosystem are especially broad, covering cloud platforms, observability, security, project management and deployment tools.

GitHub’s plan documentation says Free supports unlimited public and private repositories, although private-repository features and organization controls vary by plan. GitHub’s pricing page lists 2,000 Actions minutes per month for applicable plans. That allowance should not be treated as an all-in price: runner type, storage, artifacts, concurrency and other usage can change the total bill. See GitHub pricing and GitHub’s plan documentation.

Where GitHub is weaker

  • Advanced security can add substantial cost for organizations that need enterprise scanning, governance and compliance controls.
  • Actions can become difficult to standardize and govern across a large organization.
  • The broad ecosystem can create a fragmented toolchain if teams add separate products for planning, deployment, security, artifacts and observability.
  • GitHub is less compelling than GitLab for buyers specifically seeking one deeply integrated DevSecOps platform.
  • Organizations needing extensive self-managed deployment options should compare GitHub Enterprise Server carefully with GitLab’s self-managed offerings.

GitLab: the strongest all-in-one DevSecOps platform

GitLab is the better architectural fit when the goal is to put source control, CI/CD, security, compliance, package management, deployment and planning under one platform. Its advantage is not simply that it hosts Git repositories; it is that more of the software-delivery lifecycle is built into the same product.

Where GitLab stands out

  • CI/CD: GitLab CI/CD is a central product capability, with pipeline configuration, runners, environments, deployment controls, artifacts and reusable templates.
  • Security: Higher tiers can combine application security testing, dependency and supply-chain analysis, vulnerability management, policies and compliance workflows.
  • Delivery: Container registries, deployment workflows and infrastructure-related tooling are integrated into the broader lifecycle.
  • Planning: GitLab extends from issues and merge requests into planning, value-stream and portfolio capabilities on appropriate tiers.
  • Deployment flexibility: Customers can evaluate GitLab.com, self-managed GitLab and dedicated deployment options.
  • Consolidation: A team may be able to remove or reduce dependence on separate CI, security, registry and governance products.

GitLab’s feature comparison describes the platform’s built-in CI/CD, security, compliance, vulnerability and DevSecOps capabilities. See the GitLab feature comparison.

GitLab pricing and trade-offs

As listed on GitLab’s pricing page in 2026, GitLab.com has a Free plan, Premium at $29 per user per month when billed annually, and custom-priced Ultimate. The page lists 400 compute minutes and 10 GiB of repository and LFS storage for Free, while Premium lists 10,000 compute minutes and 500 GiB of storage. These figures are plan and product limits, not permanent guarantees; verify them before buying.

GitLab also lists paid usage for additional compute minutes and storage, as well as separate credits for its Duo Agent Platform. A seat-only comparison can therefore be misleading. Read the current GitLab pricing before making a budget decision.

Where GitLab is weaker

  • Teams that only need repositories and basic CI may pay for capabilities they will not use.
  • The breadth of the product creates more configuration and administration than a simple Git-hosting service.
  • GitLab’s public developer visibility is generally less influential than GitHub’s for open-source discovery.
  • Self-management transfers infrastructure, upgrades, backups, monitoring, security and recovery responsibility to the customer.

Bitbucket: the best fit for Atlassian-centered organizations

Bitbucket makes the most sense when Jira is already the system of record for engineering work. Its value comes less from being the broadest standalone developer network and more from keeping code, work items, permissions and team workflows closely connected inside Atlassian.

Where Bitbucket stands out

  • Jira integration: Branches, commits and pull requests can be connected closely to Jira issues and development workflows.
  • Atlassian administration: Teams already using Jira, Confluence and Compass may prefer common organizational and permission models.
  • Bitbucket Pipelines: The built-in CI/CD service supports YAML-based pipelines, deployments, variables, artifacts and integrations.
  • Enterprise alignment: Bitbucket can fit procurement, support and governance arrangements already built around Atlassian.
  • Entry pricing: Bitbucket is often marketed as an attractive option for smaller private teams, but user limits, storage, pipeline usage and plan restrictions must be checked together.

Atlassian’s Bitbucket comparison with GitHub emphasizes Jira and Atlassian integration. That does not make Bitbucket universally cheaper or better: its advantage is greatest when the company already owns and relies on Atlassian products.

Where Bitbucket is weaker

  • It has a smaller standalone public developer and open-source ecosystem than GitHub.
  • Teams without Jira may gain little from its main differentiator.
  • Its integrated DevOps breadth may be less attractive than GitLab’s for organizations seeking one security-and-delivery platform.
  • Free-plan user limits can matter as teams grow, so current limits should be verified directly.
  • Bitbucket Cloud and Bitbucket Data Center are different deployment products with different administration and commercial considerations.

See Atlassian’s Bitbucket and GitLab comparison and the Bitbucket Data Center page when evaluating deployment control.

Feature-by-feature comparison

Repository hosting and code review

GitHub and Bitbucket generally call the workflow a pull request; GitLab calls it a merge request. The terminology matters less than the implementation. All three support repository permissions, reviews, branch rules and automated checks, but the available controls vary by plan and edition.

GitHub is usually the most familiar for public collaboration. GitLab connects merge requests tightly to pipelines, security findings and deployment policies. Bitbucket’s strongest advantage is linking pull requests to Jira work items and Atlassian project administration.

Before choosing, test required features such as draft reviews, required approvals, CODEOWNERS or equivalent ownership rules, protected branches, discussions, wikis, issue tracking, code search, dependency alerts and audit history.

CI/CD

Platform Service Best fit
GitHub GitHub Actions Flexible automation and a very broad marketplace ecosystem.
GitLab GitLab CI/CD Deeply integrated pipelines, security, environments and deployment workflows.
Bitbucket Bitbucket Pipelines Pipeline automation closely connected to Jira and Atlassian workflows.

Do not compare CI/CD only by included minutes. Investigate Linux, Windows and macOS runner availability; hosted versus self-hosted runners; concurrency; caching; artifact retention; container builds; secrets; deployment approvals; overage rates; and whether your existing runners remain usable.

GitHub lists 2,000 Actions minutes per month on its pricing page. GitLab lists 400 Free-tier compute minutes and 10,000 Premium compute minutes. These measurements are not directly equivalent because vendors apply different rules to compute, runners, storage and overages.

Security and compliance

All three platforms can participate in secure software delivery, but the commercial boundary differs. Separate the question “does the platform support this?” from “is it included in my plan?”

  • GitHub: Evaluate secret scanning, dependency features, code scanning and GitHub Advanced Security for enterprise requirements.
  • GitLab: Higher tiers emphasize application security testing, software supply-chain security, vulnerability management, compliance and governance in the same lifecycle.
  • Bitbucket: Assess the security features of Bitbucket and the surrounding Atlassian ecosystem, plus any external scanners required for your standards.

For regulated workloads, verify audit-log retention, SSO and identity controls, data residency, customer-managed keys if required, compliance certifications, support commitments and deployment options rather than relying on a feature checklist.

AI capabilities

GitHub Copilot, GitLab Duo and Atlassian’s AI capabilities all target coding and software delivery, but no permanent “best AI” verdict is justified. Features, models, agents, pricing and governance change quickly.

Compare the specific tasks your team needs: code completion, chat, test generation, review summaries, issue creation, security analysis, pipeline repair and agentic workflows. Also check editor support, model and data controls, retention, training policies, administrative reporting, latency and whether AI usage is included, separately subscribed or metered through credits. GitLab’s pricing information describes Duo Agent Platform credits and agentic workflows for planning, security analysis, pipeline fixes and CI/CD modernization; consult the GitLab Duo page for current details.

Project management and integrations

GitHub offers broad integration possibilities and lightweight project management. GitLab offers more lifecycle planning inside its own platform. Bitbucket is strongest when work already lives in Jira.

The practical question is whether you want one platform or best-of-breed tools. A GitHub or Bitbucket deployment may continue using Jenkins, CircleCI, Buildkite, external security scanners or separate registries. GitLab’s value proposition partly rests on consolidating more of those services, but consolidation is worthwhile only if the built-in tools meet your requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Package and container workflows

Compare package registries, container registries, artifact retention, permissions, geographic storage, cleanup policies and integration with your build system. Storage and retention can become a meaningful cost in monorepos, container-heavy systems and mobile pipelines even when repository hosting appears inexpensive.

Self-hosting and deployment control

GitLab offers cloud-hosted, self-managed and dedicated options. GitHub offers Enterprise Cloud and Enterprise Server. Bitbucket must be evaluated separately as Bitbucket Cloud or Bitbucket Data Center.

Self-hosting can help with restricted networks, data control and local runner requirements, but it is not automatically cheaper. Include infrastructure, databases, object storage, high availability, backups, patching, upgrades, monitoring, security operations and on-call ownership in the total cost.

Pricing: compare total cost, not the headline seat price

Plan pricing changes frequently, and the same capability can be included, metered, enterprise-only or sold as an add-on. As of the 2026 pricing information cited above:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • GitHub: Compare plan seats with Actions minutes, runner type, storage, artifacts, Codespaces, Copilot and advanced security.
  • GitLab: Compare Free, Premium and Ultimate with compute minutes, storage, security features, Duo credits and the cost of self-managed operations.
  • Bitbucket: Compare Cloud or Data Center pricing with Jira licensing, user limits, Pipelines usage, storage and Atlassian administration.

For a five-person team, Bitbucket may have an attractive entry point if Jira is already paid for. GitHub may be the easiest place to start and often the least disruptive for developers. GitLab may look expensive per seat but become competitive if it replaces separate CI, security, registry and governance tools.

Build a three-year estimate using seats, private repositories, monthly build volume, runner infrastructure, artifact and package storage, security add-ons, AI subscriptions or credits, support, migration and administration. Include the cost of tools that each platform lets you remove, as well as tools it requires you to add.

Which platform should you choose?

Choose GitHub if:

  • You publish open-source software or depend on public contributor participation.
  • Developer familiarity, recruiting and marketplace breadth matter.
  • Your team already uses GitHub Actions or Copilot.
  • You prefer a polished hosted service over operating infrastructure.
  • You want the broadest general-purpose integration ecosystem.

Choose GitLab if:

  • CI/CD, security, compliance and planning should live in one platform.
  • You want to reduce the number of DevOps products your team operates.
  • Self-managed or dedicated deployment is important.
  • Data control, restricted-network operation or deployment flexibility is a major requirement.
  • You are willing to pay for a broader platform rather than assemble separate tools.

Choose Bitbucket if:

  • Jira is already mandatory and is the engineering system of record.
  • Your teams are deeply invested in Atlassian permissions and administration.
  • Close links between issues, branches, commits and pull requests matter more than public visibility.
  • Atlassian procurement and support alignment are important.
  • Your project does not depend heavily on GitHub’s open-source ecosystem.

Important edge cases

Open-source projects

GitHub is usually the practical choice because discoverability, contributor familiarity, issue participation and third-party tooling can matter more than hosting features.

Regulated organizations

Do not decide from a feature table. Verify certifications, residency, audit logs, identity controls, key management, support terms, retention, deployment model and contractual requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large monorepos

Test repository size, LFS, sparse or partial checkout, code indexing, search, API limits, CI concurrency, caching and artifact retention with a representative repository.

Mobile development

macOS runner availability and pricing can change the calculation substantially. A platform that is economical for Linux builds may be less attractive for iOS workloads.

Existing Jenkins or external CI

If Jenkins, CircleCI, Buildkite or another pipeline service is already a strategic investment, GitHub or Bitbucket may provide sufficient source control without requiring a migration to built-in CI. GitLab’s integrated CI advantage matters less when external CI remains in place.

Mixed environments

Some organizations use GitHub for public projects, GitLab for internal or regulated workloads and Bitbucket for teams tied closely to Jira. Standardizing on one platform is not always worth the migration and governance cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Migration and lock-in

Git repositories are portable, but the surrounding system is not. A migration plan must account for repository history, issues, pull or merge requests, review history, branch rules, permissions, teams, secrets, environments, runners, pipeline templates, packages, registries, security findings, audit data and integrations.

  1. Inventory repositories, users, teams, integrations and automated jobs.
  2. Separate data that can be exported directly from workflows that must be rewritten.
  3. Map identities and permissions before moving repositories.
  4. Convert CI/CD secrets and deployment approvals without exposing credentials.
  5. Recreate branch protection, CODEOWNERS or equivalent ownership rules.
  6. Run a pilot with a representative repository, including a rollback plan.
  7. Keep the old system available until builds, releases, issues and audit requirements have been verified.

The technical act of moving Git repositories is usually easier than reproducing the delivery system around them. That is why platform choice should consider likely migration cost before the first repository is created.

Final verdict

For most new teams, choose GitHub. It combines the strongest public developer ecosystem with broad integrations, familiar collaboration, GitHub Actions and a mature AI offering.

Choose GitLab when the priority is an integrated DevSecOps platform with built-in CI/CD, security, compliance and deployment flexibility. Choose Bitbucket when Jira and the Atlassian ecosystem are the deciding factor.
