Choose GIMP if your work starts with photographs; choose Krita if it starts with a blank canvas. GIMP is the better default for retouching, compositing, corrections, conversion and automation. Krita is the stronger tool for digital painting, comics, textures and animation. Both are free and open source, and using both can be the best answer for mixed photography-and-illustration projects.
This comparison reflects the official releases listed on August 18, 2026: GIMP 3.2.4 and Krita 5.3.3. Version numbers and system requirements can change, so check those download pages before installing.

The fundamental difference: photo editor versus painting app
GIMP generally starts with a camera image, scan or other raster file that you want to alter. Its documented capabilities include layers, channels, selections, transformations, retouching, format conversion, plugins and scripting. The GIMP manual and feature overview describe it as suitable for photo retouching, image creation, batch processing and conversion.

Krita generally starts with a blank canvas, sketch or painted layer. KDE describes it for concept art, comics, textures and matte painting, with advanced brush engines and animation tools. Krita can open and edit photographs, but its interface is optimized for brush-based creation rather than cataloging or routine photographic correction.

Why GIMP is the better choice for photographers
For ordinary photo work, GIMP gives you the more direct path to:
- Crop, straighten, resize and prepare images for the web.
- Adjust exposure, Levels, Curves and color.
- Remove blemishes or unwanted objects with cloning and healing tools.
- Build composites with layer groups, masks, blend modes and selections.
- Remove or replace backgrounds.
- Convert among JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PSD, GIF, BMP, PDF and other formats.
- Automate resizing, watermarking and repetitive exports with plugins or scripting.
This is a workflow recommendation, not a benchmark claim. Krita can perform many of these edits, but its painting-oriented dockers and brush controls can be unnecessary when your goal is simply to correct and export a photograph.
RAW files: an important limitation
GIMP is not presented by its own FAQ as a complete, catalog-based RAW developer. Its official RAW guidance points to plugins and applications such as darktable and RawTherapee.
- Open the camera RAW through darktable, RawTherapee or the configured RAW plugin.
- Perform demosaicing, white balance, exposure recovery and lens-related adjustments there.
- Send the rendered image to GIMP for retouching, masking and compositing.
- Export a final JPEG, TIFF, PNG or required delivery format while retaining the original RAW and sidecar settings.
If a RAW file will not open, update the processor, check that the camera model is supported and verify GIMP’s plugin configuration. Converting the file to TIFF in the RAW application is a reliable fallback.
Automation and plugins
GIMP’s procedural database and Script-Fu/plugin architecture make it the more obvious choice for batch conversion, watermarking and standardized exports. Krita also supports Python and plugins, but its strengths are creative painting workflows rather than image-processing pipelines.
Why Krita wins for drawing and illustration
Krita is the better fit when brush behavior is the central requirement. It is designed for digital painting, concept art, comics, texture work and frame-by-frame animation. Tablet pressure, brush engines, stabilizers, canvas-oriented controls and illustration-specific workflows are first-class concerns.

GIMP remains perfectly adequate for simple painting, annotations, masks and graphic elements. For sustained illustration, however, many artists will spend less time configuring the tool and more time drawing in Krita. Krita’s documented color support includes RGB and CMYK, 8- and 16-bit integer channels, and 16- and 32-bit floating-point channels; confirm the exact requirements of your print provider before delivery.

Can Krita replace GIMP for photos?
Sometimes. Krita can crop and resize photographs, apply tonal and color adjustments, use layers and filters, paint over images and export common formats. It is a reasonable choice when the photo is one element in an illustration.
GIMP remains the more natural default when most of the job is photographic correction, object removal, compositing, conversion or automation. Someone expecting a Lightroom-style catalog, keyword system and non-destructive camera archive will find neither application to be a complete Lightroom replacement.
Can GIMP replace Krita for painting?
For occasional painting, yes. GIMP includes brushes, pencils, airbrushes, cloning, transformations, layers, selections and scripting. For serious illustration, Krita is usually preferable because brush engines, stabilization, tablet response and animation are central rather than secondary features.
Layers, color and file compatibility
Layer workflows
GIMP is especially comfortable for photographic selections, masks, cloning and compositing. Krita has strong painting layers, vector elements and animation frames. Both provide groups, opacity and blend modes, but application-specific behavior can differ; test an important project rather than assuming perfect parity.
CMYK and high-bit-depth work
Krita has a clearer documented advantage for CMYK-oriented artwork and high-bit-depth painting. GIMP’s FAQ describes CMYK improvements as ongoing work and a roadmap item. GIMP remains useful for many RGB photo and web tasks, but verify color-management and proofing requirements before using it for professional print production.

PSD, XCF, KRA and OpenRaster
- XCF: preserve editable GIMP projects.
- KRA: preserve editable Krita projects.
- ORA: useful where an OpenRaster interchange workflow is appropriate.
- PSD: useful for exchange, but not a guarantee that adjustment layers, smart objects, editable text, effects, vector shapes, masks, animation or metadata will survive perfectly.
- PNG, JPEG and TIFF: rendered delivery files, not substitutes for layered project files.
Keep the original PSD, and save a native XCF or KRA. For visual fidelity across applications, export a flattened TIFF or PNG and test a representative file before migrating an archive.
Versions, platforms and installation
As listed on August 18, 2026, the official pages show GIMP 3.2.4 for GNU/Linux, macOS and Windows, with x86_64 and ARM64 builds where available. See the official GIMP downloads.
The main Krita download page shows Krita 5.3.3 for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. It lists Windows 8.1 or later, macOS 10.15, at least 4 GB RAM (16 GB recommended), and OpenGL 3.0 or Direct3D 11 graphics requirements. Actual performance also depends on canvas size, layer count, animation frames, drivers and scratch-disk space. The page states that iPads and iPhones are not supported.

Which app should you choose?
- “I edit camera photos.” Choose GIMP, paired with darktable or RawTherapee for RAW development.
- “I retouch portraits or remove objects.” Choose GIMP.
- “I need batch conversion or standardized exports.” Choose GIMP.
- “I draw with a tablet.” Choose Krita.
- “I make comics, concept art or textures.” Choose Krita.
- “I need frame-by-frame animation.” Choose Krita.
- “I prepare CMYK artwork.” Start with Krita’s documented color support, then confirm your printer’s specifications.
- “I combine photos and hand-painted elements.” Install both.
A practical two-app workflow
- Develop RAW files in darktable or RawTherapee.
- Use GIMP for retouching, masks, compositing, corrections and final export.
- Send a rendered layer or interchange file to Krita for painted effects, textures or illustration.
- Exchange through PNG, TIFF, PSD or OpenRaster according to the features you need to preserve.
- Keep the original RAW, XCF and KRA files separately from delivery files.
This workflow is optional, not a requirement. It simply prevents either application from being forced into the other’s specialty.

PSD features disappear
Import/export compatibility is not perfect round-tripping. Preserve the source PSD, export a flattened TIFF or PNG, and keep the native project used for editing.

Krita feels cluttered for photos
That usually indicates a workflow mismatch, not a missing feature. Use GIMP for routine photo manipulation and a dedicated RAW/catalog application for camera archives.
GIMP feels awkward for drawing
If you need stabilizers, specialized brush engines or a tablet-first canvas, move the painting stage to Krita and return to GIMP for compositing.
Linux packages differ
Distribution, Flatpak and Snap packages may be maintained on different schedules. Follow Krita’s current installation documentation and choose the package appropriate for your system.

Is Krita completely free?
The website version is free and open source. Paid store editions are optional, functionally equivalent versions that provide platform integration and automatic updates.
Does Krita work on iPad?
The official download page states that iPads and iPhones are not supported. Android builds are available.
Can either replace Photoshop or Lightroom?
GIMP can replace many Photoshop-style raster tasks, and Krita can replace many painting tasks. Neither should be treated as a complete Lightroom-style catalog and RAW-management system.
